Title: Wasp Spray
Post by: mortdooley on July 14, 2013, 12:28:44 PM
We keep a can by my wife's bedside and by my front door in a closet, they will easily launch a stream 15 feet. In the event of a break-in will police find fault with my weapon of choice?

I think we've covered this, but maybe not. It depends. Can you claim you were spraying wasps and just left it there? Otherwise the problem comes in civil court when you're being sued by the blind guy. For the cops, in theory SD is SD and any weapon to hand is in bounds (in your own home). But civilly? I'd either use OC spray if she wants a non-lethal option or just shoot the SOB. Just my .02.

Not the Snopes is that great of a source but there is some food for thought here.

My preference is to go crazy-ass cracker on them.

EVen if its legal, does not mean you won't lose your ass in civil court.  I would hate to think of what could happen to you if a lawyer is trying to make a name for himself( or keep thier name) could do to you.  I don't care what laws are in place, at the very least they could make your life hell.

Picture yourself in court with a jury sympathetic to the "victim". You'd be in serious trouble even if the perp wasn't permanently blinded.

TAB,

You love to bring up Civil Court, criminal proceedings, and attorneys.  Next time you prepare to type one of these as a reason not to defend, maybe you should think of the positive of being alive to suffer through these issues.

FQ,

You worry about why the wasp spray was there and how to explain it to the police.  It's none of their damn business.  It is my house, and where I happen to set things down is up to me, and IF I can remember why I put something in a certain place is none of your business.  Remember Massad's rules of disclosing information.

M58, read my post. I wasn't worried about the cops. You can beat the guy to death with a hockey stick for all they care. The only question that they will consider is whether it was justified (unless its a black teenager of course). The question come up in civil court when the victim sues you and his lawyer asks "Why did you choose such a cruel and disfiguring weapon"? Now the correct answer is "Because I didn't want to shoot his azz", but then the question is "So you really didn't feel threatened did you? I still think OC or a gun is the way to go.

It's pretty a common item in my mudroom.  Just like the shillelagh sitting the corner!  Pest control either way...

There are times and places, especially while traveling that you may not be able to take your firearms or pepper spray and legally possess them.  In those situations a quick stop at the store and you can pick up a can of wasp spray or oven cleaner to keep on the nightstand in your motel room. I don't know of any places where you are prohibited to possess wasp spray or oven cleaner.

Most forms of mass transit come to mind off the top of my head.

At what point are we pushed to hide a justifiable response because the Court System will ruin our lives?

Due to the fact that our elected officials are or are controlled by attorneys, we will always be in a system that has a special interest in getting everybody into a courtroom.  It is good to know the rules of the game, so we can prepare for their attacks.  Take training, develop your own plans and preparation for those plans, document the prior, live your life without fear, and take it as it comes.  Sad but true, today we are living the bumper sticker "I'd rather be judged by a jury of 12 than carried by 6".

OK TAB, so you have all kinds of excuses not to have wasp spray.  Let's say you fly to friendly confines of Chicago and get stuck there for a couple of days in a motel room.  You are concerned for your safety.  What would do?

Leave,  if I don't feel safe,  i leave.    if i feel i need a weapon, the local hardware or sporting good store is full of them.  Having been hit with  "pepper spray" during training in the coast guard, I am total unimpressed by it and would not rely on it for protect from anything other then a small dog.

TAB, can you find a way to post your comment both before and after your signature?

I read it and understand it, but by the time I scroll down to the next post, I can't remember a thing you said.  Thanks     ;D

Call me crazy, but guns and ammunition are far more prevalent in my bedroom, than any type of insecticide. I can say pretty much the same for the other rooms as well. Insecticides are in the garage. I don't sleep there. My cars do.

My dear wife has access to firearms and although she enjoys shooting and even has a few she never touches one unless I put it in her hand. She had a Concealed Carry for four years and never carried.
I keep a .40s&w in a small safe with an easy to remember combination and right now with no stress she couldn't open it. The real solution is send her for some truly useful training and not some clown school where Big Bill Magoo shows the little ladies how to aim and load but the prices I have found locally are individual only and prohibitively expensive.
