Title: Look what comes FREE in the blue box
Post by: alfsauve on July 27, 2013, 11:59:06 AM
It was my birthday 2 weeks ago and my wonderful wife ordered me something which came with a free prize inside

Wow, a free .357 Mag case to add to my reloading stock.

Sorry it's a little blured

I also got a free lock and a screwdriver.    ;D

Okay here's what she got me.  An upgrade to my 686-1 that I've been shooting in IDPA.

A brand new 686-6 !!

Why the need to upgrade.  The -6 has a replaceable front sight.  The newer models also are smoother to operate and the internal firing pin is more reliable.

Picked it up Thursday at Adventure Outdoors (Smyrna, GA).  $741 with tax if you're wondering.  Took it almost immediately over to the local IDPA match.  First 24 rounds where in the match.  Yeah, yeah, you are suppose to wipe it down inside and out and test fire it before you use it.   I did run a brush through it and the chambers and wipe down the outside.  It worked, OF COURSE.  The newer 2 piece rubber grip feels great in my hand.  A little smaller than the older Hogue mono grip.  I like it.  The front sight will get replaced with a gold dot and the rear blade swapped out for the thicker white outline.  Currently S&W is shipping a thin outline.

After a thousand rounds I'll have the local smithy tune it up and smooth it out a little.

No I didn't win the local match.   Did rather poorly actually.   But then shooting while walking in a squatting position behind a 3 foot fence isn't inducive to a lot of accuracy.

Yes, the -1 will be for sale in the next couple of weeks.   Offering it local F-t-F first.

Now to replace the 6" no-dash that I use for ICORE.

I'm guessing the fired case is for some type of "Ballistic Finger Printing" law left over on the books. I've never understood why it is included with the pistol? From what I understand about this whole fiasco, Maryland was one of the few, (if not the only), state to incorporate this nonsense. They dropped it a few years ago after admitting they spent millions on it and it never helped solve a single criminal case. I did what you did. Threw it into my stash of reloadable fired brass.

I thought it was just "proof" that the gun fires.

Most of the new guns I purchased that came with one had the serial number, date, and other information printed on the packet the case was in. I know Ruger didn't use to include them. They may now. I know they sure as hell didn't clean the guns after proof firing. Every new Ruger revolver I ever purchased came FILTHY. So much so my Super Redhawk looked USED! I know it wasn't because they cut the factory Ruger tape to open it up.

Alf, I have a 686...forget which dash I use in IDPA.  It has had an action job and hammer bobbed.  A local gs machined in a fiber optic front sight and another gs changed the rear blade to the Weigand blade which gives a Bo-Mar sight picture.  Alas I need the $$$$ so it will soon have a new owner (like my AR)!  I use Comp II's cause I'm not a gamer.  Slower, but at 66 I ain't gunna win nothin but I ain't gunna finish last either!  It's still a hoot to shoot.

Enjoy,

Richard
