Title: Start of the new career..
Post by: Mericet on August 04, 2013, 07:37:56 PM
Time to let the cat out of the bag, I guess. So, I finished my course work in July and have now secured gainful employment. On August 19 I will be moving to Jacksonville Florida. I will be working as an apprentice gunsmith for Tim Ward at Gunsmiths, Inc. Although they are currently based in Brunswick, GA the shop is expanding to Jacksonville and will be based at the Jacksonville Gun Club (the oldest gun club in the nation). I am looking forward this opportunity, learning a lot more and working on some high quality firearms.

Congrats!

If you get bored you can always ask FQ to teach you some air rifle techniques.

Congratulations, Mericet.

I liked it there.  Some big city stuff, but still a small town.  Beach close by.  Major freshwater and saltwater fishing.

Congrates Mericet!

I am in the process of trading my old '47 CJ2A  :'( for a lathe (old '49 Sidney/Monarch) to do some machining on gun parts (not really a gunsmith but know my way around machining pretty well  ;) ).

May need to pick your brain a bit as I build up my first rifle on a Savage 111 (280 Ackley Improved for F-class open) action if that is okay with you?

Wow.  You're almost close enough to bug for special favors. ;)  St. Petersburg isn't that far from where you're gonna roost.

Congrats, dude.  May this turn out to be a long, lucrative and enjoyable career.

In the three years I lived there I never went to  Jacksonville Gun Club.  And I admit I didn't even know it was there.  Then I wasn't into Trap and Skeet, plus I was busy starting my new post-Air Force career and had a baby.   I did go out to a gun range west of town near Cecil Field.  Don't remember the name  (maybe Duval Gun Range?).   Shooting just wasn't a priority then.   (Blasphemy, I know.)

Ok...this gave me an idea...and I'm not sure if it is worth pursuing here...or, if it turns out to be worthwhile,  how to do it.

It started with Mericet posting about his position at a gun shop at a range....I thought it would be interesting to see pictures of the shop and the range..with comments if he felt like it.

Then when Alf here said he did not know the range existed when he lived there, I thought it might be nice to have a thread called, perhaps, My Range, were members could post web link, pictures and comments of their range.

Then I thought it might be better to have 50 threads like   My Range - Alabama, My Range - Alaska, etc.

I guess there are other lists of ranges out there, but I've never found them to be "attractive"...like listings of plumbers in the yellow pages is not as valuable as a couple of friends who have recommendations...or warnings...

I will start a thread called   My Range - Yes or No for discussion.

Congrats..
There's money in Jacksonville to be made! May you make plenty of it, and friends to share the time with!!
(Stay away from Orange Park.. That and the MEPS Station is about the extent of my working knowledge of J'ville..)
Have fun and God bless!
If you need help in Gainseville area for anything, let me know. I still have a few old friends over there..

Thank you everyone. Looking forward to life down there.

I will help if I can.

My practice ammo for fifty yard targets is still less than a penny a round. How about yours? ;D
Congrats Mericet, nice to have another pro-gun Floridian.
