Early Childhood Screening set for August 27,28
Windom Area Schools and Early Childhood Family Education are offering a free Early Childhood Screening program on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 27 and 28 at the Early Childhood Center at BARC in Windom.
The program is for all preschoolers age 3 and older by Sept. 1, 2013, who live in the Windom Public Schools District 177, and have not yet been screened. The screening is not the same as a physical given by a family physician and is the only screening offered by Windom Schools during the 2013-14 school year.
Parents may choose to have their child screened elsewhere, but those screenings may cost up to $100. If a child was screened last year or through Head Start or Community Health, the child does not need another screening for kindergarten enrollment.
Early Childhood Screening is a simple and careful check of the health and development of the preschooler. Early Childhood Screening includes:
* Large and small muscles
* Thinking, language and communication skills
* Social and emotional development
* Vision and hearing
* Height and weight
* Review of immunizations
* Review of health history
While screening can provide useful information about health and development and is a requirement prior to kindergarten entrance, it is not used to determine readiness for kindergarten. A preschooler is screened and scored according to his age at the time of screening.
Following the screening, a developmental summary is reviewed with parents. The screening takes about 1½ hours.
For more information or to make an appointment, call Windom Community Education at 831-6915, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., by Friday, Aug. 23.
Why does a child need to go through this before the can be allowed to enroll in a public school?
I know this is nothing new, and I have always questioned it. Child goes one direction, the parents go another, lots of questions, gold star for pajamas, check for tin foil marks on scalp ...

Because if a child is deficient in some certain area, they can label them as 'special needs' and the school can get more $$ from the gub'mint.
It ain't rocket surgery.

For the most part public education ceased to be about education a long time ago. However, looking at the list, on the surface those things seem like normal stuff to me that one would need to check a kid for to see if they are ready for kindergarten. But since it says, "it is not used to determine readiness for kindergarten" then I would suspect it's to find more victims for government social programs.

When I was in 1st grade they found I had ambyopia http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/lazy-eye/DS00887
it was difficult to treat at that age..I just would not wear the patch at age 6..
I do think that it might be easier to get a 3 year old used to it...and I would think the condition would be easier to correct with less time to develope.

This one really is for the children and I don't mean nanny state bs. I am all for kids getting a physical before they start school/ shot records check. It helps keep the other kids safe, gives a chance to find stuff like hearing and vizual imparements that can drasticly slow down learning.

Are you talking about all the stuff your family doctor does for you? You know the person, the one with a medical license who already knows your family's medical history, as opposed to the nurse who takes vitals and fills out the forms.

It is about government gaining all the information they can about the child and the family and maintaining control. Schools gobble it up, because it puts them in a position of control over this child's rearing. After all, we all know that Nurses, Teachers, and other mandated reporters are the saviors of the nation >:(

what if you don't have a family doctor? the way I read the artical, this was a no cost alternative to going to the doctor.

One of these days you will be taking your kid to one of these, and that day you will understand. Watch for the key questions that intrude on your privacy. I haven't been through one of these for over 20 years, and they weren't good back then. Based on what I am getting asked at the clinic these days I can only imagine what is being asked of the parents and children in their separate interviews.
Let me also point out that contrary to what Pres. BHO says, everybody has access to medical care without his intrusive toy. In our state we not only give away welfare and coverage, we spend millions on billboards, radio and tv ads telling people there are free cash and benefits waiting for them >:(

So far, his doctor hasn't asked any prying questions and has been nothing but helpful (of course, I'd be helpful to someone who was paying me $150 for 10 minutes of my time). You'd better believe that if any questions like "are there guns in the home" ever came up, my wife has been instructed to decline comment.

You'd better believe that if any questions like "are there guns in the home" ever came up, my wife has been instructed to decline comment.
She'd be better off saying no. She won't be lying if they're on your person, or in the safe. Never let them infer anything from an answer or non-answer.
