Title: Michael Bane wears orange tinted shooting glasses - should I?
Post by: clarkemyers on September 01, 2013, 08:06:03 PM
Michael Bane wears orange tinted shooting glasses - should I?  Or maybe I'm other abled color wise and they aren't orange but pink or rose or......?

What tint do people wear and why?

For purposes of this thread I'm asking strictly for practical variations of handgun shooting - with dedicated prescription glasses focused front sight in the dominant eye and infinity in the off eye for IDPA and other such games. Not talking shotgun where there are some specific reasons to choose a color as for orange targets against evergreens. Not talking bullseye. Because I'm talking prescription shooting glasses - not inserts - I only get one chance to pick a color (two if I pick wrong but......) but also because it's for a limited use it's ok to be specialized for shooting sports if a tint is really better for IDPA or for USPSA or for.....

I suspect the orange must do a good job on IDPA cardboard or Cowboy Action iron or something?

Color and tint are personal.  I like yellow/amber and polarized for good contrast.  I would only suggest that the frames be close fitting.  There ain't nothing like hot brass caught behind the lens next to the eye.  I've got scars from not following that advice.

Dittos on the hot brass!! I catch one about every other time I go out..
All I can tell you about colors is that yellow is recommended for driving in snow.. You should be able to ask around the range/club for an ophthalmologist among the membership for suggestions or a guide of some sort..
I might try taking this one to AR15.com or Warriortalk forum. Avid shooters on AR15 and operator types at Warriortalk..
Just a thought..

also the condtions and time of day can make a huge diffrence.  As mentioned above, fit is every thing. I'd rather have a cheap pair that fit great then a $300 pair that don't.  This is coming from some ome that has spent most of the last 15 years in safety glasses.

With bifocals, i looked at a lot of options. Ended up with some expensive prescription oakleys with orange lens that work pretty well for all around shooting and other sports. Color does help with contrast and tint is not so deep that the get too dark on cloudy days. Was shooting with my photo grey lenses and the orange does help.  My biggest problem with bifocals has always been needing more reading prescription to bring the front sight into focus. these are good, but next time I will have them expand the reading section a bit.

I looked at the styles that allow prescription inserts and they were too bulky for me (didn't fit my wide nose), read about the guys who flip their Rx to put the reading section on top and just this seems wrong. I am going to train with a visual system that i will never wear in real life! Don't think so. Never got into contact though now that I think about it if I got a reading Rx for the right (dominant) eye and distance for the left then I might naturally start shooting with both eyes open. that is a trick this old dog can't learn when the buzzer goes off. I guess I could just stand closer! :)

Revolvers? No!  Lever Actions? Yes.  Semi-Auto? Yes.  Bolt Action?  Not yet.  Side shields at some ranges may deflect brass back toward the shooters face.  Just what I've experienced, $.02

I don't know if you've seen or considered these for dedicated shooting glasses but I almost went for a pair of prescription shooting glasses a year or two ago. They were a wrap around design and fit snugly to the head/face, held snug with a strap. Kinda like a Z-87 for sports. They're ventilated and had a channel between the face and frame face for sweat. Felt like sweat wouldn't be a problem. I don't remember the brand. They were blue plastic frames.
If you see them at the optometrist, maybe have a look..

I have never been hit by a piece of my own brass ( knock on wood)  but  others all the time.

Forgot to mention overly strong ejector springs on some O/U and SxS might send some hulls faceward with some force.

A rule from one of my first handgun instructors - wear a baseball cap. Keeps the brass out of glasses.
Ignore above rule if you are just shooting around Alfs. ;)

I use Ray-Ban aviator green tint for 90% of my outdoor shooting because that's what I wear. (raybans are NOT safety glasses)
The other 10% is either rose or orange for shotgunning clays.
If I'm inside, regular sunglasses are too dark, then I switch to clear safety glasses.

Michael Bane and Julie Golob are in orange tinted shooting glasses on their respective blogs. Does this mean orange is good for everybody or may it means orange is good on camera or maybe it means something else entirely?

Get a pair and try them is all I can suggest.

Me?  I'll take the standard clear lens.  Some colors and red dots don't play well with each other.

Orange lenses are specifically to block the "blue" from the color spectrum.  They allow for greater observable contrast when the background has large elements of green as in hunting in the woods.

Yellow or amber lenses are similarly designed to reduce the blue and improve contrast in the above-described situation.  They work well as driving glasses because they enhance contrast.

On the negative side of things, if you happen to be wearing orange lenses and you are trying to shoot an escapee from a detention facility that dresses their clients in orange jumpsuits, you will be at a disadvantage.

That doesn't come up a lot in my shooting life.

I wear yellow lenses when I am hunting or at the range (unless I accidentally leave them in another range bag back at the homestead--then I wear my regular dark glasses with a brownish tint).

All of my glasses are bifocal and, as a personal opinion, bifocals suck no matter the lens color.

FWIW

I read several years ago that green lenses sharpen the contrast of black and white targets and gray is neutral. Both are used in sunglasses, but if I don't need sunglasses I wear yellow or clear safety glasses. I never tried orange.

Micheal Bane also wears some seriously ugly shirts, so it's not much of a fashion recommendation .  ;D
I suspect that he wears what is handy at the time, or what works best in his experience .
That's what you should do, use what works best for you.

Blue light doesn't focus quite the same as red/yellow so you get two different focal planes for the two images. Our eyes are incredible and they accommodate this difference through software and working harder. If you filter out the blue with yellow or orange lenses then you eye doesn't have to work so hard. This is good for old eyes and for tired eyes as it reduces stress on the muscles. You will get less eye fatigue with these lenses over a long session. Less of in impact for young eyes or folks with very sharp vision.

BTW the prisoner with orange will stand out, the one in blue will look like he is wearing black as the blue is absorbed.

One effect is that when you take them off after a long day, your eyes will bloom like a camera with all the blue light they are suddenly receiving. Everything will have a slightly blue cast for a few minutes. I believe this is due to the chemical imbalance in your retina cells, the blue sensors have not worked all day and have stored up extra chemical sensor for blue. It takes a few minutes for my eyes to adjust to having to focus full spectrum again.

Eliminating blue also cuts glare as there is a lot of uv  in reflected glare from the sun. Probably more than you wanted to know but physics is cool. :)

Best glasses I have owned were Serengeti Aviators.

They are blue blockers and did an outstanding job at cutting glare.  On the highway in light rain and lots of vehicle spray in a continuous line of traffic, I could clearly see 3 vehicles farther wearing the glasses than without..I could see no hint of the vehicles in the spray without the glasses.

The color/design of these lenses was also done so there there was no color shift as compared to other blue blockers.   They can also be had with prescription lenses and polarized or not.

Yea I had a pair of those years ago and loved them great driving glasses.

Loved the Drivers...the Large Aviator are slightly larger.

I was concerned about using them as shooting safety glasses but I had dropped my Drivers several times on sidewalks, parking lots and even had them slide off the top of the car as low speed...no damage at all.

When I felt they were safe I ordered a prescription pair for the range and it was a great improvement over  anything else I had tried.

Lost the prescriptions some where but sill use the Drivers.

i don't think there is anything more frustrating then losing a good pair of glasses.
