Title: Any M&P.45 users out there?
Post by: Frosty on May 23, 2008, 03:51:20 PM
I purchased a Smith & Wesson M&P.45 last month and really, really like ike it. I am new to this forum and was wondering if anyone else has the M&P.45 and what your thoughts or feelings are? Do you like the M&P.45 or dislike.
I have sent 1500 rnds down range without any problems, my M&P was dead on right out of the box.

Welcome to the site, and good post. Can't tell you much about the pistols, though, I did look at the AR rifle/carbine and thought it quite overpriced for the product, especially as it was made by Stag. How's the quality of the .45?

I really like mine....and it's pretty...not like a Block...er Glock.  ;)

I spent $100 for a trigger job on mine and got it back yesterday.  Supersweet!

The only thing I've seen on the downside of the M&P's was in 9MM at a class...in the late afternoon after several hundred rounds and a little running around there would be a few stovepipes and the slide would not always lock back on the last shot.  This looked to be directly related to the shooter not holding the gun properly with a locked elbow.  I saw this on other manufacturer's weapons as well.

1500 rounds, eh?  That's pretty good.  Do you know if Crimson Trace makes laser sights for the M&P 45's yet?

Pathfider - regarding quality I feel it is real good, of course I don't have much experience with pistols and esp. auto's. and can't really give an expert answer other than what I just said. On another forum there are some folks that had bad experience due to a quality control issue from S&W, but they seem to be the minority.  I suppose that all gun makers have some issues. But if I remember right S&W has a lifetime warranty for the M&P - can't beat that one with a stick! As compared to other gun makers that give 90 days or what ever. As I said I am impressed with it as alot of folks are.

Rastus - I believe I read on another forum that CT does make  laser sights for the M&P, I'm not sure if they have them for the .45 yet or not. I believe they do for the 9mm, .380. It doesn't matter I can't afford them anyway - well at least the significant other says I can't. :'(
That's kinda weird that you get a few stovepipes after several hundred or so and the slide won't lock on the last one out :o
I'm with you on the blocks - er, Glocks. they remind me of a 2x4 with sights but there are alot em out there so that says something I suppose

I've been going back and forth on rather or not I want to buy one...   Still not had a chance to shoot the 45, but I have shot the 9 and the 40,  So far they have been the best striker fired pistol I have ever shot.

TAB...I don't know if it's still valid, but S&W had a promotion with a $50 rebate plus an additional mag.  If the rebate is still going on you may want to get one now...I got in on the $50 + a mag promotion.

Also...there were some SHOT show specials left where I got mine...the show specials had the tritium night sights for no extra charge.  So..I got my M&P 45 with night sights installed ($75 for sights?) and a $50 rebate and a mag.  Hope it's still going on so you can get in on it.

Frosty....it was how they were holding the gun.  The gun needs something to recoil against and the M&P seems to need a solid hold a bit more than did the Glocks.  The FNP 9's seemed to suffer a bit more from shooter fatique than did the M&P's or Glocks.  But...the FNP's being double/single action do have the best trigger...at least until I spent $100 to get my M&P slicked up.

Yep,the rebate is in effect till Aug 15. Here's the link for details... http://tinyurl.com/699eu4 (http://tinyurl.com/699eu4)

The quality of the M&P line has been proven and MANY L.E. Agencies have adopted them as Duty Weapons.

Finally, an M+P post,.. Hey Frosty, Crimson Trace does make em' for the .40, I'm sure with the popularity of the M+P, all calibers will come if not out already. They are as you correctly pointed out around $250.00. :-\

My M+P .40, shot right out of the box with NO problems at all. Switched the mag release to left handed in about 2 minutes, and am still waiting for my free two mags. Although, I did get my $50 check. (The pre Easter promo).

The cust. serv. rep said they are shipping them as fast as they can.

Congrats on the .45! Plus, it was the 2007 Handgun of the Year.

Hawkfish even said they weren't bad, thats a good thing. ;D Totally proud and selfless pic attached.
Happy Memorial Day!

Thanks for the chat & info. on the M&P, since I'm fairly new to pistols I didn't know about stovepiping from improper hold or is it limp wristing ::)
TWYACHT if your looking for a M&P forum here's the url -  http://mp-pistol.com/boards/  it is mostly M&P's but there's other pistola stuff. I finally got my 2 extra mags. 8 weeks later - still waiting for my $50.
Take care & watch your back

I've had my M&P .45 for about a year. After about a thousand rounds with no issues, I decided that the trigger, while ok, could use a little love. Mike LaRocca did the work and now I have about a 4 lb pull, no creep and very short reset; money well spent. The slide will sometimes release and chamber a round on its own when seating a fresh mag. I consider that a feature instead of a bug. I had the opportunity to torture test the .40 and the 9 minimum a couple of years ago. We put 5K rounds through both guns, shooting more for speed of rounds downrange rather than accuracy. Every 100 rds. shooters were changed and temperature readings were taken. We were unable to make either gun choke; although one young lady singed her finger on a hot slide. I bought the gun as soon as it came out in my preferred caliber. If I had to take a pistol to a gunfight, it would be the M&P. The only other mod was a 10-8 rear sight and a F/O front. Excellent weapon, highly recommended; I consider it ergonomically superior to the Glunk and the ability to swap backstraps as well as the mag release position are a big asset. My gun has the external safety but not the mag one. End of infomercial.

I purchased the .40 first (pre .45).  Great gun no problems.  I'm a sucker for the thumb saftey so i traded it in when the .45 was available.  I've had it for nearly a year plus my two mags, gratis, but missed out on the $50 deal.  One plus (at least for me) the .45 can fire without a mag.  The .40 I had wouldn't.  There has been plenty of rounds downrange (3000+) and no problems to speak of.  Another feature I like are how the backstraps are made.  Several pistols have a slide in insert.  The M&P's are more shaped to fit the hand (and its my understanding that the CT grips that fit the 9mm and the .40 should also fit the .45 but don't take my word for it as I don't own them (yet). Overall, thumbs up on the M&P line o shootin' iron or shootin' polymer. You know the gun thingy.  Sleep calls

Just had my trigger job by Kevin Toothman @ USSA and my group shrank appreciably.  I imagine you have the same storyon group size.  I measured my current pull and it averages 4# 5 oz.  Good for what I need it for since it is for personal defense not hunting.  I wish I had measured the pull before the work...it's much better now so there's no telling what it was.

My 1st post is just a little above this one.  Yes, I have one with the thumb safety and it works like a thumb safety ;D

CT does make a laser for the .45, but it doesn't fit the ambidextrous safety. At least not w/o modification. I LOVE my m&p 45. Revieved the rebate after about 4-6 weeks, and the mags a week later. have only put a couple of hundred rounds through it, but no problems so far.
