Title: You think gun boards get cranky?
Post by: fightingquaker13 on October 14, 2013, 04:07:45 PM
I have seen a few threads on gear or technique get heated here. But lord, I visit a couple of fly fishing and fly tying boards. A couple of days ago some newbie to fly fishing was mentioning that he was having trouble getting blue gill to take his fly because he's in a drought area and the fish are stressed and skittish. He wanted help. I, being both helpful and a redneck offered what I thought was an eminently reasonable solution. I suggested he go to Wally World and buy a bottle of GULP Alive juice and soak his flies in that for a minute (works for me). I swear from the responses you'd have thought I posted a picture of someone's daughter on a  porn site. ;D I am apparently a leetle bit too practical for purists. But then I had the crazy idea that we fished to, you know, catch fish. ???

The point is, that the next time you think someone is getting snarky over the 1911/Glock issue, or is in full mall ninja mode on having the "right" AR or optic? It could always be worse. ROFL!

If you want to have fun that's similar to releasing a cat into a dog show:

-Ask what's the best oil to use on a car forum
-Ask what's the best protein supplement on a weight lifting forum
-Ask what's the best caliber for self defense on a gun forum.

THe ford vs chevy on a truck site is more fun.   the which gun for sd/ cal wars are pretty much don't happen on sites i have visted.  The answer is always what you  can shoot best( ie quick fallow ups in the right areas), are willing to train with and what you can aford( both to own and feed)      any one that says anything diffrent, they are full of shit and should be ignored.  A 38 wad cutter to center mass is better then a 500 smth and wesson thats a miss.     same with  a 2 shot 22 short darrenger in the hand, then that 1911/glock/ ar/ barret 50/ what ever in the safe.

That's for amateurs. Just post that you voted for BO here, then get the popcorn out. ;D

AR15.com is the worst board on the internet for a new guy to ask questions.  I have seen them tear guys a new rear end just because they ask a simple question.  I know most of the questions are answered somewhere on there if a person just does a little searching, but that is no reason to be an ass.  Most new guys come on any board, the first thing they do is ask questions that most everyone knows, but we answer them and be nice about it and hopefully the new guy stays.

Go to AR 15 Armory.com instead. It is a whole different animal. Super knowledgeable people, a few of them pros who work at places like Anderson and a lot of dedicated shooters. It started precisely because ARF.com is full of douche bags. If you go, and you should if you're into ARs or other EBRs, mind your manners. Due to them noy wanting to be ARF, they moderate heavily and there is little tolerance for what we would consider good clean fun here. But its a great place to get a technical AR question answered with no BS, particularly if you're starting a build or looking for ballistics info.

I've been waiting for 2 years to get approved on one forum!  When I contact them about "What's the deal?" they keep telling me that I am in line for approval.  Wouldn't want to say any thing controversial there!  LOL

Richard

PS:  It was recommended here on DRTVF!

I am actually a member there too, although I haven't checked in in  a long time!  And yes, you are right, much nicer folks on that board.

One of the nicest boards I am a member of is the GTO (2003-2006) forum.  I've met friends there that I now shoot with, one does my companies IT and another one manages my GTO tunes.  Kind of "refined" gearheads.

I was at a match and ended up talking to one of the owners of ARFcom.  He asked me how I liked the forum.  I told him I don't know, have not been there in years.  I think I am banned.  He tried to "sell" me on how great it was, but I still don't go there.

I think one of the problems is that some people feel empowered behind the anonymity of the keyboard.  In this information age, someone can get pretty close to sounding like they know what they are talking about without even owning a firearm.  Then you have the old sages who learned at the school of hard knocks get shredded and go away for good.

Funny, I asked 1 question there and got no answers. given that it was a newby question and I later found it in their monstrous stack of FAQs, I was probably lucky to avoid a flood of total disdain.

People confuse ignorance with stupidity and facts with knowledge. I am a fan of the "If you can't teach it, then you don't know it" school. One of the reasons I love to teach scout to shoot. I always relearn what is fundamental.

About the only good thing about arf is the knowledge base. Not just on guns, but on just about every thing.  Same with reefcentral , rdp( best i have found at that) and a few others.   so hobbys have such a deverse group of people in them, you can litterly ask a Q or " I need x" on them and some one will know or direct you too the right place.

One thing that can kill a great forum faster then anything else is bad mods.   happen to Reef central.  They got some really power trippy mods.  I left.  That was a while ago.  Damn shame.  I have never seen another knowledge base on anything, like there was on RC.  I wrote several faqs(all of them still up)  had a few threads crack the 200 page mark in the diy section, mainly on me helping others.  Was a supplier of god knows how many acrylic diy "kits".  Then about the time it went to a pay for faster access/ more features bs. It went down hill quick.  From what i hear things are much better now, still not logged in for years.  No plan too any time soon.  whats really funny is i was raving about ats( alage turf scrubbers 10+ years ago)  and how they were much better at removing docs and other nastys,   the rest of the hobbie finally cuaght up with me  lol.   i would love to set up another reef, but rc left such a bad taste in my mouth i won't.   besides, i like planted tanks more and they are cheaper. Lol
