Post by: TAB on October 23, 2013, 06:09:59 PM
Just got a call from the bank, they shut it down.   went from $300 ish  to over 26k  in 10 mins from dozens of transactions.

Similar thing happen to me not long ago.  Funny thing was that one of the charges was someone trying to buy a huge order at an online AR accessory site.  For a second I had to stop and think if I did that until I realized I didn't have an AR (yes, I am that one guy who doesn't have one yet).

Thankfully I was not on the hook for any charges.

I lost my credit card about two years ago.

It is being used by someone in Atlanta, but I haven't reported it....They are only spending half what I was.    ;D

I have replaced my credit card 4 times in the last 5 years due to fraudulent charges. I check my account every morning to make sure it is ok. One morning I checked it 10 minutes after it was posted. 20 minutes later I was at the credit union and had my card canceled and had the purchase cancelled. Notified the po-po about it the first time but even if the find out anything they won't tell you so I don't even bother anymore. Let the credit card company handle it.

I seem to have that happen at least once a year.  Each time the credit union/VISA identifies it first and calls me.  The most it's been is one item for a couple of hundred dollars sometimes much less.  I order a lot of stuff on line so I suspect that may be the source of my problem.

Both I and my younger son have had this happen with our bank debit cards over the last couple of years. We got together with a friend who works for our bank in the card fraud department and started looking for a pattern. We noticed that every time the bank caught an irregularity and shut down the card (note: it was always rapid, and detected within a few hours) it was after using the card at small, out of our normal area gas stations. The lady at the bank said most of those type gas stations use wireless, wi-fi style systems for card transactions and it makes it easier for thieves to sit across the street (or in some case inside the store) and snatch card info. Most of the bigger fuel centers use hardwired systems.

Hmmm.  Just saw this.  Well, it 'tis the season for stealing your card.

Since I quit using the card at restaurants I have not had a problem.  I pay cash anywhere they want to take the card from my sight.  Restaurants have bad actors that take a picture of the card and then 3-4 months later it pops up with fraud.

The only problem I had was with my ex charging stuff on my account. I'm not sure if it was while we were legally separated, or just not living together before that. She has NEVER had a card on my account but knew my credit card number and ordered things by phone. I got a new card and haven't had a problem since. I don't even know when I got divorced (it wasn't important enough to take note of) but I think it was 15 or more years ago.

Strange how a person forgets little things like that....

I remember the day I got married because it was a big deal. I was legally separated a year and a half before I got divorced, but we were living apart well before then. My best guess would be 2001 or 2002 when it was finalized. I would have to see the paperwork to know which year it was and haven't the foggiest idea what time of year it was, let alone the date.

Years ago I ran into an old friend that I had not seen in a while and when I inquired about how he'd been he said he'd lost 250 pounds of ugly fat since I'd seen him last.
I asked how, and he replied that he'd signed divorce papers.

Hey Les, did you ever get that agent's name?  It's time to start planning a 2019 Pacific tour....
