Title: Speaking of Insurance..
Post by: santahog on October 27, 2013, 12:01:20 AM
I go through to keep the values on my policy current about twice a year, given the roller coaster in prices lately. I got into it again yesterday and adjusted some up (and some down, for a change). When I hit "submit", it kicked back two of them saying that they weren't insurable.. What the ...?!
I fired off a note to USAA and got back that "A gold ring isn't covered for more than $2,500, ...", and that I wasn't eligible for the policy anyway, but that my policy was in effect. I just couldn't add or adjust values anymore... HUH!!!
I responded "Well, I'll be damned."
One of the two kicked back was $2,400. The other was $400. The explanation didn't even fit the circumstances..

I JUST renewed my homeowners, with another outfit, of course. Now I have SERIOUS concerns as to whether I've got "actual" coverage on any of the guns, or not...
I need insurance on the guns.. My Homeowners/Auto carrier doesn't cover them at all. I can't afford to write a check to redo the base policy, but I need these things covered..
Who writes your policies, please, (if apart from your base Homeowners policy)?
I activated that base $2,500 NRA policy, and will probably just go through them for the rest. Do any of you have any experience with that outfit/coverage?
ALFA is a big carrier around here, who does write a firearms policy. (Formerly) Cotton States is another. Met Life writes a policy, I think.
My deal is that I'm in an (clean but) old Mobile Home for a house, and most insurers don't write a policy on them. I'm limited. The ones I mentioned do write M.H. policies.

Any experience or suggestions would be appreciated..
Total to be insured, (replacement cost) not counting ammo is about 13K at this point.
Thanks..

THe mh bit is going to be tough. I am not sure if they will cover your mh but liberty mutual is a good company.  I have had them for years and have agreed apon valued for many items including guns.   i hate to say this, but you may need to just call every one. Diffrent states have diffrent policys.

TOm its lockton affinty( underwriters) armscare plus.   just before warned they only cover the gun.  No mags, scopes, things attacthed too it, cases, safes( maybe covered by your ho), ammo or any smith work.     there is also a bunch of other restrictions( always read the policy) and its not a replacement value policy.( as far as collector value goes) has a high dectuable.   the only good thing is its free.   so better then nothing, but not worth the price of a stamp to mail it in.    don't get me wrong, i am so over insured its not even funny, i am a firm beliver in taking procautions, but insure up the wazu.  A quick google search will be able to get you the polciy info, finding who underwrote it took me some time.

Oh.
OK.
That's stuff all goes in the recycling file, but I thought it might be fitting to mention it here.

I haven't had too much trouble with insuring items as long as I pay attention to the type of item (portable or not) and intended use (only on property or traveling).  However, Errors and Omissions and Liability are the thorns in my side.  Not only is it hard to make sure you have the proper coverage, but if you decide to switch companies you still need to carry with the old for long enough to assure coverage for the era you carried them.

I have NRA Armscare. Your $13,000 worth would be about $125 a year by my estimation. Mine was $181 a year for $10,000 before I raised it.

I took a quick look at my policy. The deductible is only $100. They cover clips, magazines, holsters, and gun cases only if the gun they go to is stolen. They don't over ammunition, bayonets, knives, binoculars, hunting glasses, and spotting scopes. They cover theft from a vehicle if a locked portion of the vehicle was broken into to get your gun. Accessories means scopes, rings, mounts, slings and sling swivels attached to an insured firearm and additional barrels. Also traps for fur-bearing animals if I'm reading this right.

I just got back to the house, but The Affinity/NRA guys, MetLife, ALFA and whatever Cotton States got bought by are the three I've found so far.
I've never liked the idea of "bundling" mandatory or not.
I'd had a high opinion of USAA, but all I had at the time I bought this policy was Auto. I haven't done anything but pay premiums since then, (on the Firearms Policy). I had to cancel the Auto because their M.H. coverage was twice what Allstate offered. The Auto went up but I still saved $1,000 a year this way. (Mandatory Bundling in effect..)
Guess I've got to start all over now, huh.
I'll let ya know how it turns out. Any additional ideas or suggestions would be most helpful if you come up with anything.
Thanks guys..

Santahog,

May I suggest Core-Vens Insurance. They insure gun collectors min $100K at $350 per year. Deductible is a high $1K but homeowners and NRA free stuff may give you near total coverage. Look up corevensguninsurance.com. Also, not a good idea to google your search for reasons you probably understand very well. I Yahoo'd this one. Yahoo is less unfriendly to gun ownership. There are probably others in the business as I didn't look too deeply into the list after searching. Good luck

Check with your local Farm Bureau agency.

A lot of folks might not like them, but I have had a great relationship with our local GFB branch for thirty years. I know each state is different, but it couldn't hurt. They add most items, such as rings (like I did with my wife's engagement ring) to your home policy. They do guns (as of last year) as a separate policy.
