The Gun Owners Action League (GOAL) reports that what is supposed to be a 40-day firearm licensing process in Massachusetts is often taking up to six months.

As a result, many law-abiding citizens who apply for gun permits are literally waiting more than three times as long as is stipulated in the licensing process.

According to Fox News, "Chapter 140, Section 131 of Massachusetts' General Law states, 'The licensing authority shall, within 40 days from the date of application, either approve the application and issue the license or deny the application and notify the applicant of the reason for such denial in writing."

The Washington Free Beacon quoted State Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) as saying: "The failure of [Gov. Deval Patrick's] administration to process firearms license applications on a timely basis is embarrassing and grossly unfair to the many law-abiding citizens who meet all the legal requirements."

GOAL reports that some Massachusetts citizens have waited even longer than six months for news on their firearms license application.

The law should be changed to state that if the permit is not denied in the proscribed time, it is, by default, approved.

That's how NH law is written.
But our "permit" is only for CCW, not purchase or possession.
