Title: Up And Coming: 9mm Carbine
Post by: jaybet on December 27, 2013, 12:11:32 PM
Rarely am I at the start of a trend, but this time I think I'm on to something. Over the last few years I have been thinking about a type of firearm I'd like that is not all that common. I have also noticed over those same few years that the gun industry has been going on little jaunts....such as the mini 9s, the resurgence of the 380, and the rush to .22 and .22 training after Sandy Hook.

Recently Taurus came out with something like what I'm thinking...the 9mm carbine.
I think it's a great idea...fairly large projectile, high velocity, especially out of a rifle barrel, and low cost to operate.  Trouble is, other than the old camp rifle I haven't seen much that is available or workable. I would think they would sell like hotcakes.
There's the Beretta- overpriced and feels like a Star Wars toy. The Kel Tec Sub... ok but hard to find and a little odd. There's the High Point which to me looks like it's built out of plumbing parts. There's also the Olympia 9mm AR type- pretty expensive for a plinker/light defense carbine. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few, but none has the features, price, and availability I'd like to see.

I just think that a nicely made, versatile, "Not-odd-looking", inexpensive 9mm semi-auto carbine would be a big hit and it's an overlooked part of the market.

I would love to see Marlin bring back their 9 MM and .45 ACP Camp Carbines in either Walnut or synthetic stocks. Having them in Stainless Steel would be a big plus as well. With todays ammunition costs, there is no doubt they would sell. Have them Glock magazine compatible.

The Taurus carbines are too Buck Rogers looking for me. Plus I don't have a 9mm or .40 caliber pistol to share ammo with. http://www.taurususa.com/rifles.cfm

P.S. 10 rounds is not enough for a pistol caliber carbine. I have 15 and 20 round mags for my Para/MechTech .45.

i agree the camp carbine coming back would be awesome, i would buy one or three of them.

What about the one (Mec-Tec maybe) that you use the Glock or 1911 lower?  The Glock with a 33 round mag would be OK.  They are a bit heavy and I have never fired one so I can't speak for reliability.

FWIW

never shot a mektek, but a few cc, the cc does not have a pistol grip.  It would also not trigger CA  aw laws, the mektek is a felony in CA, if you install it.   legal to own, just can't install it.

If Marlin would bring out the camp carbines in options for glock mag feed I would be all over that. Until that happens I'm being constantly tempted by the sub2000 from Keltec or the JR carbine.

If the Camp Carbine .45 had a double column mag I would have bought one when they first came out. That was the only reason I went with the MechTech. The carbine length barrel increases your muzzle energy by roughly 1/3. I guess it depends on the ammo. I had some Winchester truncated cone FMJ +Ps that blew a pop can full of water completely in two. I thought it was impressive for a FMJ.

Citadel (Legacy Sports) is going to be importing a 9 mm version
of the M1 Carbine. The price is supposed to be reasonable
IIRC. Just checked GOG website and msrp for the synthetic
stocked version is $625.

THey may 40( i think thats the number) round 1911  mags.  For the guns purpose. Standard or 10 round mags fit the bill.  The idea was the same as a 6 gun and a lever gun, to have interchangeable amm.  Same idea, just the mag interchangable too.

I have always liked the Hi-Point carbines in any caliber . Great reviews on reliability and performance . A gun smith / gun shop owner has one and he loves it. Cant beat the price either. Sometimes you have to give up looks for reliability. I mean just look at the Glock,  ;D

Too many evil features.   to make it legal you would need to take the flash hider and make the mag release "tool" operated( google bullet button)

Pistol-caliber carbines have been a bee in my bonnet for a while now (http://www.exurbanleague.com/misfires/?s=carbines&x=0&y=0). They range from the indescribably cheap (Hi-Point) to the barely adequate (Kel-Tec) to the ok (Beretta). There's just not a lot out there for less than a grand, and for a grand, I can a decent AR.

The new Legac 9mm M1 Carbine intrigues me, as it's a proven platform with a bunch of accessories and takes Beretta mags, for under a grand.

There's just not a lot out there for less than a grand, and for a grand, I can a decent AR.

That's why I bought a 9 MM AR. All of the mags, (Colt or Uzi style), hold 32 rounds, (10, 15 and 20 rounders are available), they aren't expensive, they're easy to obtain, and they function well. It's better to spend a few hundred more and get something you're going to be happy with, than settle for something that doesn't light your fire and only makes a few sparks, then dies out.

I was in the same boat that many here have commented about. I looked at the Beretta, and to me it looked like a cheap toy. Too much plastic. I don't believe the Just Right Carbine was out yet. If it was I hadn't heard or read about it. So after checking into 9 MM AR-15's, I went with a Rock River Arms 9 MM over the Colt.

It ran a couple hundred less at the time, but what swung me was the fact the Rock River Arms lower was milled solid as a dedicated 9 MM. I didn't care for the pressed in mag well block Colt uses. The Rock River seemed more solid in that regard. They take Colt style magazines, and there are a lot of manufacturers who make them. Colt, C-Products, (the best from a quality vs. value standpoint), Pro-Mag, and a bunch more I'm forgetting.

It's been almost 3 years since I bought it, and I'm glad I did. It runs like a scalded dog with most any type of 9 MM ammunition, from standard cheap Ball to the high performance defense stuff. If you get one just be sure to buy a Uplula Mag Loader, or you'll bust your fingers loading the mags to full capacity.

I didn't even know Bushmaster had one. When did they come out with it? Can you post some pics?

Here's a link, I don't have any real pics of mine handy. I'm not sure when they came out but I've had mine for a few years. I had an ASA 9 carbine that would not work at all, jammed every few rounds. Dumped it and got the bushy. I have never had any type of failure with it yet. Of course some people will poo poo the fact that it's not a metal frame but it's basically a toy so no biggie to me. I put one of those Bushnell, wanna be ACOG's, on it and it works pretty slick.

I forgot about the Carbon 15, 9 MM. My wife has had a Carbon 15 in .223 for several years now. Good running little pistol, that's a blast to shoot.

After weighing in earlier on this thread some research brought me around to the Lone Wolf G9.

They don't show in stock right now but look pretty appealing.

I'm still drawn to a glock mag feed platform. My Glock mags have been the most reliable feeding system to any firearm I own, with pmags coming in a close second.

The Thureon Defense carbine looked good until I saw the price. I have more of a Hi-Point budget. You can get 3 HPs for the price of one TD.

It's been a bit since we've talked about this topic.  I wanted to throw another .02 in here and say I have found a keeper. Its not in the hi-point price range by any means, but I am a firm believer you get what you pay for. I found the carbine that met my requirements of 9mm, ar style platform, and gock mag feed system. Anyone out there from Glock listening? Glock has been late to the party on a few things and I think it has cost them some lost sales. I'm sure if they catch up the diehards will still buy, but I digress.

I chose to go with the Lone Wolf and couldnt be happier. The price set me back a bit so an optic will have to wait, but for now the inexpensive mbus sights do the job for range time. Only one hiccup/misfeed in the first 200 rounds and that was my fault. I didnt have the mag seated correctly. Funny thing is it functioned for 3 rounds fine before it couldn't strip a fresh round from the mag. This was on the second mag through the gun. The gun has been completely consistent since. Busy schedules, work, and ammo restrictions are currently limiting further range time, but I'm extremely happy with its function and accuracy.  100 yard range on a 10" plate with my old eyes over and over again is wonderful. I would suggest a shipper other than USPS for the upper. They certainly did their best to damage mine. It was delivered to my door with the box smashed, the barrel sticking out the end of the box by 4" and a few places where the paint was chipped off of the full float quad rail.

All in all, as I said, I feel it's a keeper.

Too many ticks in that field.  Whie the carbine is accurate, I don't have enough ammo for those things.

just to resurrect this thread, I'm thinking about a 9mm AR style but in a pistol length barrel....probably go with the rubber butt cap instead of the SigBrace, but on a longer KAK length tube which puts it nose to charging handle for me...

As a heads up, LoneWolf is now offering this in a pistol platform. Go figure, that came out a month after I ordered mine. I did ask if it was an option at the time but was told no. I don't plan to sbr this though, its light enough as it is. I may be headed for a hi cap drum mag though. This thing is just too much fun to shoot.

Don't trust the drum mag until you have REALLY tried ir out, they haven't got a very good reputation in any gun.
