Title: It's my birthday, what should I get?
Post by: PEOM on June 03, 2008, 03:52:02 PM
Ok, so my birthday has come around and the wife says to look at the new gun shop for ideas. Here are two options:

1. A NCSTAR scope (STM2732G) mil dot tactical scope. All metal, designed for my AR with 2-7 variable power, lighted cross hairs, bullet drop compensator built in, and I have seen it advertised with a lifetime guarantee. Price is around $75. Economical, and has gotten favorable customer reviews at "Cheaper Than Dirt" for the price.

2. A Crimson Trace laser sight for a Kel-Tec P3AT. At $250, or there abouts, it would be my birthday/fathers day/ anniversary present.

I guess I could see about trading in the ares night vision scope I got for coyote hunting, but never used.

What are your thought, opinions, and input?

Hmmmm.  I was gonna say a nite scope but as you have one and don't use it....

OK,  the P3AT laser is a good thing IF it is your carry and/or bedside gun.

Scope for the AR,  what cha' planin' on usin' it fer?  If it is for 'tacticle' probably a fixed 2 to 4(max) power would be better.  Even fer huntin a 3 or 4 power is plenty for shots out to 200 yards or so (the 'or so' depends on you).

Give us a little more info and we can REALLY get you confused!!  ;D ;D

The AR is a Rock River M4 carbine with adjustable stock. Used at the range for target, could be used for hunting up to white tail deer that are around. Also is one of a few for "emergencies".

The scope being variable is one that is in stock. I like the idea of having the lower power if targets are closer.

The P3AT is carried, a lot. Haz, do you think trading in the night vision scope is a good idea? Got a decent deal on it when I bought it several years ago, but just didn't develop a use for it. Just curious.

Budget for firearms and related accessories is limited, so I am trying to make an informed choice.

I keep asking for a nickel plated Colt SAA fully engraved, with ivory or stag grips and fire blued screws but I haven't got it yet!  Seriously though I would choose the scope because you will get more use out of it.  The laser grips are great and I would always follow MB's advice and go with those, but for a B-day present I would choose the scope because you will get more frequent use out of it.  The grips are great but once you buy them and put them on the gun you don't get to use them that much, they just sit there and unless you shoot your Kel-tec a lot you will not get to use them often.  Besides Kel-tec's are great carry guns but not a lot of fun to shoot.  I have bought too many of those "cool to have" items that you buy and after the first fifteen minutes of "Hey check this out!" you realize you really don't do much with it.  So I say go with the scope.  Just my two-cents and it's worth less than that!

Peom,

With the answers you give i'd trade or sell the nite scope and get the laser for the P3AT.  For short range, emergency SHTF stuff it is nice to see the dot and know where the damn thing is pointed.  As they say you lose your fine motor skills (hell, even the gross ones are tough to control) and any help is a good thing.

As far as the scope.  I have a 30-06 that I hunt with.  I have a straight 4x on it.  If I could have got my hands on a 3x I would have pefered that.  Good for close and good to 200 yards even with my old eyes.  Never have to worry about it being set on 7x or 9x when you need it for that fast short shot.  My scope is a TASCO and ya know what?  It works and it cost around $70.

Go for the Crimson Trace, If you NEED to make the shot it probably will not be from a typical shooting stance, more like fending off an attack with one hand while you get your pistol out with the other. It will probably be a computer shot (Point and click  ;D  ) so for self defense the laser most likely will be the only USABLE sight system available to save your life.

If you live in a Class III friendly state, get a supressor.

Gift card for ammo! Although as a P3AT owner, I too would like the laser sights for such a small platform.

Which one will you use the most often? I have a NcStar on my Sig 556, because an ACOG is WAY too much for me right now.

I enjoy it, BUT don't rely on it everyday like my carry weapon.

Good Luck

If you decide to trade the night scope, put it up here in the classifides section. I have been looking for one, casually, for some time now.
Whatever you chose, enjoy the cake, and Happy Birthday ;D

How about option 3? Get something for me.  ;D

.223/5.56mm is marginal for deer unless you shoot them in the head or neck. I took my AR with a 20" barrel once, but the velocity loss in 16" barrels makes it too little energy IMO. it should work for any smaller game though.
