Title: shooting him 68 times did not violate his civil rights
Post by: Jkwas on June 05, 2008, 02:52:51 PM
Story in the Sun Sentinel:

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-0605lakelandshooting,0,5076668.story

Quote:
LAKELAND, - The Department of Justice says SWAT team officers didn't use excessive force when they shot the suspected killer of a sheriff's deputy 68 times during a manhunt near Lakeland in 2006.

Angilo Freeland was the man believed to have fatally shot a Polk County deputy and his police dog. Nine officers fired on the 27-year-old after finding him hiding in the woods the next morning. They say a sudden movement by the suspect caused them to fire.

The Justice Department sent a letter to Sheriff Grady Judd this week saying an investigation had concluded that Freeland's civil rights had not been violated.

Don Brown, president of the local NAACP chapter, says he still believes the number of shots fired at Freeland was excessive. He called it ``profoundly disturbing.''

Just in case the link doesn't work.

Back when this happened, they asked the sheriff why they shot him 68 times. He said "We ran out of bullets".
Gotta love it. The poll at the end of the story is good too. Last I looked, 68% said they did not think it was excessive.

7.5 rounds per officer, missed a lot too.
I'm at a loss for words to even comment.  Can you imagine that scene?

When nine+ officers are pointing weapons with giggle switches at you and you don't drop the handgun in your other hand, guess what happens?

But to the point, how can being shot one time, twelve times or sixty-eight times violate the shitbag's rights?  He only had a right to die by five bullets and not sixty-eight?

I was in Lakeland on business when that happened.  My hotel was "locked down" and only guests could come in or out.  I ventured out to a Hooters for a beer and food.  They were very busy traying up tons of food for the LE that were looking for the shitbag.  Good for Hooters for their support.

I'm guessing automatic M4geries were involved too, so the missing was probably lots higher.

Ya gotta give the dirtbag credit for being able to stay vertical long enough to take 68 rounds.  :P

I think I would've given up the ghost about round 35 or 36....37 tops. ;D

I remember when this happen a reporter was on the phone when the firing started and there was a recording of it.

No full auto involved but there were semi AR types as well as handguns.

That sonofabitch was lucky Jerry Miculek wasn't behind the trigger!   ;D

As to him able to stand to take 68 rounds, if I recall when they caught him he was trying to go underground and was hiding in a hole so he likely had a dirt backstop to lean up against.  Good for the LE to utilize a safe shooting backstop.   ;)

+1 to Gunman's comment.  Coming from an LE family I tend to get a bit cranky with stories like this.  They are becoming all too common for my taste and sanity.  All the same, this piece of dick cheese didn't give a shit about the cop he wounded or the two (cop +K9) that he killed. They should find Angilo's mommy and sincerely bitch-slap her pathetic ass for spawning such a low life piece-of-shit.

NAACP's Don Brown should get the same treatment.  "Profoundly disturbing" my ass.  Angeilo's civil rights ended when he pressed the trigger and shot a cop.  I plan to write that asshole and let him know how I feel about his fucked up comment.

No, it ended when he leveled that gun at the cop.

Ron, one of the things we like around here is when people share their true feelings. So, please, feel free to let it all out and tell us what you really think!

He was actually hiding under a log in some brush.  The reason he killed Deputy Williams and his dog Diogi:  He was pulled over for a blown tailllight.

Here's some pics from the poker run we held for the officer.  I believe there were over 1,000 bikes on the ride
