Our nickname for her was the USS Zippo.  She still had fires almost on a weekly basis.  I was never stationed aboard, but I crossed her deck many times in transit.

Sad day for the Navy...134 Sailors lost that day...  July 29, 1967.

I spent a short stint on her sister ship the Saratoga.  Unfortunately, attempts to turn her into a museum have failed so she'll have the same fate soon.

I was on the Saratoga for 15 minutes waiting to change "liberty boats" .
