Title: An ode to the snubbie!
Post by: Lucas on June 10, 2008, 02:40:38 PM
I feel as though the snub nose revolver has become somewhat forgoten about in todays market.  In a world of high capacity, DA/SA,  polymer frame,  shoot real fast handguns  the snubbie still holds its own IMHO.

I remember around 14 years old I was shooting pool  (damn good too)  and I was aproached by an old barfly.  He bet me $5 that he could beat me with a broom.  I took the bet.  When the bartender handed him the broom I knew I had it made.  It was the ugliest,  old,  beat up straw bristled thing I had ever seen.  Only about 4' tall and about 1 1/2" wide and splintered.  I broke,  made two in,  failed to follow it up.  Well,  I didn't get another shot in after that.  He cleaned the table,  took my $5,  and bought me a Coke.

I guess what I am getting at is this,  there is no substitute,  test,  or new found technology  that will replace the tried and true.

Reliability,  Durability,  and Hole Punchin Goodness!

Snubbies are indeed making a come-back.  Sales are up, as some folks are looking for a smaller package that is more easilly concealed.  That plus the improvements made in short barrel ammo has made the .38 spl snubby a more potent arm.
I've purchased two in the past year, one of which (.38 spl) I carry as a back-up in my front trouser pocket, secured in a pocket holster.  T'other is a .357 mag I use as a sometimes primary carry gun.

Bravo! Great post, Lucas.

I've done a lot of bashing on this forum of those .380 micro auto loaders. I have often said that if you are looking for an ultra small, very concealable package then the snubbie is the way to go. I am a firm believer that if you are only going to only carry 6 or 7 rounds in your carry gun then you would be far better served having them be in .357 rather then .380 - And reliability is hands down better in a revolver then an auto loader that is that scaled down.

Pioneer also makes a great point about how great the .38 and .38 + P ammo has now become. It may not blow a hole threw them the way a .45 will, but it will certainly bring the conflict to a quick and decisive end.

BTW: Pioneer, you have given me gun lust..... those are some great looking firearms!

Good thing 'cause a lot of us would be in big trouble.
I've owned a number of different handguns, and I keep coming back to the revolver.  No great reason, just like them better.  My main carry gun is a Taurus snubbie, and my weekend belt gun is a Dan Wesson with a 4" barrel.  Love the look of a full underlug.
But I really, really want a 4 5/8" .357 single action.  Gun Lust

Up until a couple of years ago a snubbie never entered my mind for concealed carry.I watched Shooting Gallery, episode 80 I believe, and Michael Bane and Walt Rauch opened my eyes. I kept trying to figure out how to conceal an auto pistol in a large enough caliber with reliability. Well the good old snubbie to the rescue everything they said made perfect sense. As soon as I can get the money together I will have my snubbie. Stupid bills and living expenses. Well anyway a snubbie is hard to beat for concealibility and reliability and I will not feel undergunned with a .357 snubbie in my pocket.

My favorite method of summer carry is IWB at about 4 o'clock with a t-shirt over it. I've found no mater how big or small a gun is...whatever goes inside the pants is pretty much hidden. The problem with semi-autos is the grip frame has to be large enough to fit a mag full of ammo, no matter how small the pistol...which can be a challenge to hide. Snubbies (like the 642) has a tiny grip which is pretty easy to hide...even with a t-shirt.

Back in the galaxy far, far, away that was my first marriage, I bought her a Model 60LS S&W .357 for about $500. (Now a little more)

It was the Ladysmith, 2.13 inch barrel 5 rounds, I used 110gr. Winchester .357 rounds. or .38+P JHP's.

Your right Lucas, the Dick Tracy snubbie has lost the "Limelight", but is still in production, and is about as reliable as summer heat.

I would have carried that pistol to this day but, (as I cry in my adult beverage),,, she kept it. :'(

Oh well, if it keeps her safe so be it. She'll be alive to torture,, er,  I mean enjoy the relationship with another guy. 8)

Good post, I'm gonna start looking at some catalogs,..Maybe a S&W Model 640 Centennial. Thanks,

Even though I carry a variety of weapons ,I always seem to go back to the snubbie calling my name from the gun safe. ;)

ericire12 I own a 642 without the "Lady" on the side and without the lock and love it!  If someone is close enough to see it doesn't have "Lady" on the side they are TOO close!!!!!!!
