Sen. John McCain on Tuesday proposed lifting the ban on offshore drilling as part of his plan to reduce dependence on foreign oil and help combat rising gas prices.
Sen. John McCain says it's time for the federal government "to put our own reserves to use."
Talk amongst yourselves.....

I'd keep paying a little more for gas to deplete the oil from the Middle East. If they have no more oil, the terrorists don't get funding. I saw that Dubai is down to around 15-16 years and they're dry.

There's a lot of oil in the world. But not an inexhaustable supply.
Physics dictates, that a well's production rate falls gradually over time. What I'm saying is that if the world has, say, 30 years worth of oil in the ground that is the total volume of oil in the ground at today's consumption rates. The problem...it will take 60-90 years to get that volume out of the ground. Hence the viscious cycle of drilling, artificial lift installation and reservoir enhancements.
Coal and nuclear development is our near term solution for lessening oil reliance. Creating a fusion reactor would be best...sadly there is no crash program to develop one (more important things like championing thought laws and thought police). Another huge help would be to create room temperature superconductors as 30-40% of the electricity generated never makes it into your home...it dissipates as line loss before you ever get it to your appliance...that's right...your bill reflects payment for something you never received because of physics.
Damn those politicians. We've had 30 years of lip service and all I hear is the same mindless dribble out of Washington I heard in the 70's. There was enough hot air expended in D.C. in the 70's to take the most minor of baby steps to build a serious of high speed regional rail systems across the U.S. ...not even that was done.
So....McCain is flipping on offshore drilling, eh? Wonder what kind of fish-slapping, bottom-of-the-boat frenzied melee' he is going to create when it's time to support the 2nd Ammendment? Perhaps Bloomberg will advise him. Talk about a winning choice for Prez this year....the mindless mule eating briars smiling B-HO HO and border boy McCain.

I think we're all complicating this a little too much. We've already spent enough money over there. I think it's time for a great big 51st state. We could call it Oilistan or Oilachussetts.

That's good!
That loud pop we heard was McCain's head coming out of his ass. Times change and so should policy. All the same, mindless politicians that can't think ahead are what caused this. They were all around in one form or another when Carter was president so they know what "fix" we need of oil. Drill now. Drill where it makes sense to drill. The Rocky's, off-shore, Anwar ... whatever the state's want to do but we need to do it now.
I heard .... don't know if it is true ... but B-HO could be drilled for a pint of crud ... or was that crude? ;D

UPDATE: McCain's support of off shore drilling may help him win Florida.
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/florida/election_2008_florida_presidential_election
Rasmussen Reports will release additional national polling data on energy topics later today. Earlier polling showed strong support for offshore drilling.
The Florida survey also found that McCain currently leads Obama in the state by a 47% to 39% margin. Six percent (6%) said they would vote for some other candidate while 8% are undecided.
However, after voters were told that McCain favored offshore drilling and Obama opposed it, McCain’s lead increased to eleven points, 49% to 38%. While a three-point net gain is not stunning, it is significant that the issue didn’t push voters towards Obama. All of McCain’s gains on the offshore drilling issue came from male voters.

I for one am tired of the US being an energy wimp. By opening up more drilling we send a clear signal to the world that we are willing to act in our interest. We are dependant on oil but the democrats have demonized the phrase “the US is dependant on oil” as if oil is a drug. They treat oil as something we have to quite cold turkey.
I have news for them – we do depend on oil and other traditional forms of energy for our survival and so does the rest of the world. This is not a bad thing because, as of now, it is the most practical source of dependable energy.
Environment America, a green advocacy group, has issued a report, On the Rise: Solar Thermal Power and the Fight Against Global Warming, pointing out that some large-scale solar thermal power plants in the Southwest could meet all the nation's energy needs. The report concludes that a patch of solar arrays some 100 x 100 miles could power the country. The “greens” think this is fantastic news. However, do the math – that is 10,000 square miles!
Of course you would need more that one in order to be redundant, have increased reliability and make sure that electricity is generated if it is a cloudy day at the primary location. Let’s say that we actually build only three units. That would be 30,000 square miles! I believe that is about the size of South Carolina! Wouldn’t that practical.
What the democrats don’t seem to understand is that alternatives to replacing oil, coal and nuclear power just are not practical today. It may be in the future but not now.
In short we cannot rid ourselves from depending on oil. However, it does not mean that we can’t produce more of our own oil (build more refineries, and build more power plants) and provide incentives for businesses to work on alternative forms of energy for the future.
I believe it is time for more politicians to change, or to use the term – flip, on their previous positions on energy.
Good Luck!

Thats right.... If we start drilling like crazy, OPEC will flood the market with supply and drive down the price of oil real fast. Thats exactly what happened during the Reagan years, and it is what fueled most of the boom of the 80s and 90s.
We started down the road to using synthetic light sweet crude and OPEC drove down the price below what it would have cost us to produce synthetic oil. Now we have put that aside and they have driven the cost back up.
OPEC completely controls the price of oil. Don't let anyone try to tell you other wise.

That's just how the big wig's in NY NY wanted it in 1980 now they have it. HAPPY TRAIL'S.

Drill now, Drill Deep, Drill Often ! Build more nukes. Where you gonna build em? Right next to the existing ones.
Double down! If they want, they can put the waste in my subdivision. Just give me a lead house and a radiation suit.
Coal/shale to oil? Do it now. Coal fired electric plants? Build the plants right next to the coal fields. Hydro-electric?
Let's do it. Did McCain Flip flop? No, he just re-assessed his priorites with changing tactical situations. Even Charlie Crist
Realizes that if the tourists don't have the gas to come to Florida, it doesn't matter how nice the beaches are. ::)
You'd never know I have a degree in environmental science :o

The only thing that would change if we opened up things for more off shore drilling is, we would buy less oil from the middle east.
Which would be a good thing, but it won't effect gas prices one bit. Not only would it take years for them to get up and running, it would also cost about the same.
What we really need is more refinerys... thats where the "bottle neck" in the fuel supply is.
-
TAB,
How about we do both? Drill for oil (will help prices go down) and new / expanded refineries for improved capacity and efficiency.
We should also stop all of the blends mandated by every state.

YES! Drill more and build more refineries! We haven't built a new refinery in what, 25+ years? We need to work towards less consumption and to develop alternative fuel sources that don't effect our food chain.

Voters in Elk Point, SD have said yes to a zoning ordinance that would result in construction of the nation’s newest oil refinery in over 30 years.
We have had the opportunity since the OPEC oil embargo in the "70's to develop alternatives but we have not done it. So how are we going to turn on a dime and make it happen now?
Everything has an impact on the food chain. Look at ethanol production. It takes food out of the food chain, uses huge amount of fossil fuels to grow and refine and the plants literally stink. Batteries for hybrid cars use huge amounts of water to produce, are encased in plastic developed from oil and are a hazardous waste when depleted. Solar panels are like computer chips – they are made with toxic materials, contain lead, and are considered a hazardous waste when depleted. The florescent replacement light bulbs contain mercury and are considered a hazardous waste when depleted.
Where do you think this stuff gets made? In factories that produce pollution by workers who commute and use energy. Energy that, for the most part is made by fossil fuels and nuclear energy.
THRE IS NO ECOLOGICAL FREE LUNCH!
I'll say it again we need multiifaceted solution that includes increasing domestic production of traditional energy and nuclear combined with developing alternative sources of energy - and yes conservation.
Good Luck!

what we really need to do is stop mandating the use of ethonal... the only reason why we have the programs we do now is so people get elected/relected.
