Title: Lever Gun Care???
Post by: Ksail101 on June 22, 2008, 09:36:26 AM
Well you all should have known this question was going to come up now that I have this beautiful rifle.

I want to keep this rifle forever, and I want to hand it to down to my son, daughter, or grandchild. There is a very special meaning to this rifle, not only my first, but how I obtained it, and the just the unparrelled beauty. I have picked out a name for her. It is a dedication to my two Grandmothers (Dad's mom & Mom's mom) that had huge hands in raising me and were basically my mothers growing up. I spent alot of time with both of them and miss then dearly. So her name is Myrtha Marie.

So this is the question; how do I keep the wood oiled\maintained?

I am pretty crazy about keeping my guns really clean and always ready to go, and Haz already gave me some good pointers on keeping the barrel and action clean and lubed, but I would really like to hear everyones thoughts or tricks to keeping this rifle in good condition?

I know my modernal rifles M4\M16\AR's M249, 240Bravo, Ak.ect. But this is my first civilian long gun. So I cant hear or learn enough.

Also you have any general pointers or knowledge that you think I should know that would be awesome too. Tools\Ammo\Oil\Grease I downloaded a Winchester 1892 operations manual that has tons of good stuff in it, but like I said I cant learn enough.

Are you all tired of hearing about her yet??? LOL :P

Honestly a good quality wood oil will do it just fine.  I would stay away from waxes as they will make it slippery.

Personally I don't get real excited about it and just wipe it down with the rag I used to wipe the excess oil from the gun.  Then again I like the look of 'used' wood where you can see the handling of it over the years.

You know what It is Weatern Washington, so what do you all think it is doing. You guessed it its Raining and 50 degrees!!!!

But I am going up to the woods here in a little while. I hoping it will stop raining. But it rained almost 4days straight last week. And the last month has been horrible. Either way I just want to get a couple rounds down the Barrel.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh....   :) Me thinks that Haz now has another verbal contender to have to try to outsmart.. ( I said TRY)  ;)

The Young One and the Blond..... What a match!
Ksail~~ Haz knows what he is up against with you and me. ... so he better get ready to put his big boy panties on and give it his best shot.

(Let the games begin)  ;D

I use Fluid Flim to wipe guns down .
http://www.eurekafluidfilm.com/
My family has used it forever. I saturate  a rag with it.. put it in a zip lock bag and keep it in my gun bag. Every time I get done using my gun and even handling it , I wipe it down and before putting it away.
I never ever have had a rust problem.

Marshal likes and uses Ballistol.
 http://www.firehawktech.com/v/vspfiles/V4_Backup/b%5Eindex01.asp

He keeps it in his gun bag.
I use it too occasionally..so anything like that is good.
The key is EVERY TIME you use your guns, make sure they are never put away w/o being wiped down.
But it looks and sounds like you already do that K.. so maybe we are singing to the choir...and you can tell us a thing or 2.   8)

Dont worry Marshal'ette, I think Haz is really at the book store tryin to find a "one liners" book to come back and get us with.

But I am one step ahead I bought those books last year. So Ill send them to you. Its kinda like the New England Patriots, knowing all the plays of the other team before they play them.  ;D ;D

And thanks for the gun care tips.

I am excluded from bad mouthing the Seahawk.  Holmgren coached the Packers to a Superbowl win.

Well, as far as the chillie goes...I browned the meat (@ 3 lb ground pig) then added 6 seranos, 4 polbalnos, three (wimpy) anahiems and then 6 loas hot pepers (little bastards).

The lady cooked a store bought loin in spicy mustard and got some egg noodles ready. Also she made a gorganzola cheese sauce.

I loaded my plate like this: some noodles, piece of loin. smothered with spicey chilie!!  :D
