I tried to spend about $800 today at Sears. The same Sears that the Yahoo Finance page shows their earnings per share at a loss with a negative $12.87.
Now mind you, I told each store I would buy the tiller but they didn't need to know my number, name or anything about me. First they wanted my phone number which is..."867-5309", of course. The number wasn't good enough, they wanted my name, ...next of kin, first borns' name, etc....and of course my address....I asked them if they wanted my cash. Sure they said.
OK, last name Fu..."How do you spell that???, said they."...I replied, "One consonant "F" and the last letter a vowel...you know a vowel "a-e-i-o-u" and sometimes "y"...Since they didn't know what I was talking about. Thank you Mr. Fu they said...then I walked out. Two stores....not one.
I have cash...all I need is my receipt for the warranty. So long as they pursue intrusive marketing I'm happy for them to have negative earnings.....

Like you, I make it up as I go....
I don't have a card from any store, anywhere...don't use my debit card much if at all anymore. Cash in hand, no credit cards... I bought some tools from Sears a year ago to replace some old stuff that had seen better days. Had to look real hard for "lifetime warranty" tools.
Someday, they'll be gone, no longer the anchor chain, "go to" store for anything! Our stores look terrible with clothing all over the floors, unkempt departments and overpriced at best..
I find more with better pricing online anyway.

I quit being annoyed when Radio Shack wanted my phone number to sell me 2 AA batteries 40 years ago.
I just make up info or use info from years ago.

Then when it is all paid for and in the bag, pick it up and say Thank you.

That's what I do. I've never had any store tell me that they couldn't complete the transaction without it.
The only exception is a pizza delivery place. They need to verify the number they have on the caller ID to make sure it isn't a prank order.

Our Minnesota urbanites have heard my rants over a couple of businesses up there. It is common for the liberal communities to ask for your driver's license when purchasing anything firearm related. I was told by a clerk that it was the law, I asked them to prove it, she said they were directed to, I asked to see a manager, she said they must verify the purchaser is of age, I put what's left of my gray hair and my gray beard in her line of sight and asked if she thought I might be over 21, and then she said she needed a date of birth to enter in the register before it will allow her to enter ammunition, I gave her 01/01/1930, she did not type a thing but took my cash.
I hate liars, and have never entered that store or any of their chain since!
