Hey! My wife bought tickets to a fundraiser and we are told that we won a Savage 111 Package. Looked it up on line and I can assume it's the less expensive of the two versions, but we WON it which is very, very rare.
I am NOT a rifle guy, so I could use some help here because we could probably get something else instead, so what do you think? I don't hunt but it would be nice to have a scoped distance piece for fun and protection, but I'm also thinkin' a lever action 22 or 357 might be more fun.
Also, they come in multiple calibers...any advice on 270 Win, 30-06, 7mm, 300 Win mag if we have the choice?
We don't hunt, so it would be used for target shooting and such.
Also, my wife shoots long guns lefty so the bolt action might be a little awkward for her.

JayBeth,
CONGRATS!!
I have a Savage 111F (syn stock) in 30-06. UNBELIEVABLY accurate. The trigger is SWEET (accutrigger) and adjustable by the user. LOVE the gun.
.270 is a good fast. flat shooting round for anything up to and including mulies (some say elk but I think that's pushing it). Ammo a bit harder to find.
30-06 - what do I need to say? IMO best all around cartridge ever made, proved through 2 wars and will do the job no matter what that job is. Doesn't matter where in the world you are there will be 30-06 available. (you can get a Federal 55 grain for it that does 4000+ fps!) I bought my .308 Ishy so I had both a 30-06 and a .308 for SHTF time. Every one NEEDS at least one 30-06!
7mm and 300 win mag are good rounds but harder to find and pricey.
I put a 4x scope on it and it is fast handling and no fooling around with the scope whether it's 30 yards or 300.

Congratulations:
I've done some investigating and Savage is definitely an excellent shooting value. If the dealer/FFL will let you substitute, I'd go with the 11FX in .243 Winchester. Lighter recoil and can be used from varmints to whitetails with the right ammo. Ammo plentiful.
Or the Model 25 in .223. Saw one next to me at the range Thursday and it was making <1" holes with factory ammo.
Or the MK II in .22LR or .17HMR.
If you can't substitute then go with the 25-06 as a versatile round, for targets or varmints. Savage does make Left handed model 111s.

Congrats! Man, I have never won a thing in my life. Maybe Albert King was sing'n about me?
Too bad you don't hunt! Great hunting rifle and you have some options for some great hunting rounds. I would recommend the 30-06 or .270 for versatility or should you decide to trade for something like the lever gun (CAR ... Cowboy Assault Rifle).

Congrats on new rifle. ;D

AlfSuave,
My opinion (worth what ya pay for it ;) ) the 243 is too light, might as well have a .223. Fine for PD and coyotes. 25-06 is a great medium caliber round. Flat shooter, also good for varmints, good for white tail and mulies, but so is the 270 and it is easier to find. I stick with my 30-06 as the one do all round. If your going to have ONE bolt action 'reach out and touch some one' gun it has to be a 30-06 (IMHO).
Now if I was gonna get another bolt for lighter stuff that is a great shooter it would be the 25-06.
But to me it all comes down to 'can do it all with ammo readily available' and that equals 30-06.

Hey, Jay. Good Karma. What goes around, comes around.

Ah, the secret of the good karma is not expecting it back...with what I need, I couldn't build up enough good karma in a century. But...I appreciate the sentiment.
BTW....you must LOVE that outhouse.
Now there's a new wrinkle. An option may be the Henry Golden Boy 22 LR. 22 is cheap as hell and we could blast away. Considering we don't hunt...a nice option?
-
Not a bad option! They make some solid rifles.
Maybe leverage it for a discount on a Fender CS Tele?!?

I've got a couple of strats I can't let go of long enough to play the sweet tele I have, so a rifle woudl be a lot more fun.
-
I've got both a Golden Boy and Henry Frontier (blued version of GB). Love to shoot both of them. Highly recommended. That's my 2 cents.
-
Know the Strat feeling. I usually grab one of my Tele's but I have an '88 Strat Plus that is hard to put down.
Go with the 22 lever gun. A friend of mine has one and they are great shooters with a pretty classy vibe to them.
-
Hey, if you're gonna shoot and enjoy it more...go for it!
-
Hey...we got it!!
We took the equity in the win and got a Henry Golden Boy so she could work on shooting lefty (left eyed)/
NICE PIECE OF WORK. They say you pay for the Henry name. No s___! A very nice rifle in 22. I immediately started to lust after a 44 mag...
Picture will follow...
This is such a sweet piece of work...
Hey MB! You should see if Henry wants to sponsor DRTV! - ( I know....being a musician I've been through countless companies for endorsements) BUT...the rifle we got is a really NICE piece of craftsmanship and, if I dare say, Chutzpaa...some of you guys might have to look that one up...
Octagonal blued barrel, wood stocks, and brass plates...(it's a 22 for cryin' out loud) It may have well been JOhn Wayne's saddle rifle....nice work.
We cannot stress how CLASSY we feel throwing 22 LR down range with this rifle.
(Once again...pix will follow.)

Great call. Henry makes an outstanding rifle. Great guns that are very, very handsome too. You said it right .. very classy.
I have an early model (first year) Win 9422 that is a hoot to shoot. Gun came with a really nice piece of wood which makes it a very handsome rifle. But there is something just so cool about the lever and the sound of a round being chambered.
BTW ... Did you get the email I sent you on my Telecaster?
-
The Golden Boy's action is smooth and as stated earlier, a real hoot to shoot. My grandson has already informed me that when I'm gone, it's his ( I hope by then he can buy his own ::) ).
-
Sorry, nothing on your tele...please send again.
-
Nice choice Path. Yep, lever guns are fun and in .22 you can afford to burn ammo in it! ;D
ENJOY!!!!!
-
Jay,
Nice choice.. Hope to see some pix soon.

We're not photographers, but here's the little wifey winner with her new toy, and a picture of it shined up for a trip to the range. A real classy and fun way to throw 22 downrange.
