Anyone own a S&W 638 Bodyguard Hammerless that they can share some experiences on? I love the size and weight but how is the recoil of a load that size in such a small, light pistol?

I have the shrouded hammer model. Not too bad for recoil. I don't leave home without it.

Used to have a S&W M49. Sold it in a moment of weakness 15 or more years ago. Wish I had it back ... would slap a pair of CT grips on it.

I have the S&W 642, which is basically the same gun, except for hammer configuration. I was somewhat concerned, like you, about recoil considering the size and weight of the gun (plus my ham hands). You need not worry about it though, IMO, the recoil is very manageable even for quick follow up shots. I use mine as a CC piece during warmer months, which speaks volumes considering I count on it to save my life in a worst case scenario. Buy it with confidence, you won't be sorry.

I have a pre-lock pre +P 642 myself. Changed the grip to the old style with Tyler grip adaptor. Doesn't add too much bulk for carry and makes it easier to control. Haven't fired any +P ammo in it due to bad wrist but any ammo I have shot is no problem even for the light weight.

They are not too bad. About the same as the others snubbies... as long as it's not some super duper hot load..

Basic ballistics, lighter gun, greater recoil,, just grab it an shoot 5 rounds at 5 yards,, if it does the job, Nough said, if not, go to something heavier.
