Wifey and I went to range night last night and one of our "occasional" range buddies had brought his son and 3 grandsons (all teens) to shoot- Newbies too! Anyway, we go cold to change targets and I walk down the line to see who's shooting what, and he's got a bottom feeder that I couldn't ID without touching so on the way to the targets I ask him what it is. He tells me it's a H&K USP .45(two tone). I had looked at these in the case at the shops but the prices always turned me away.
So he consults with range master and shows up at my spot with the gun and two loaded magazines.
I have to say that I have not fired an H&K before but I was impressed. This thing felt good, really good, and smooth as can be. And it was barely broken in.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you have the dough these are definitely worth a look.

Jay,
I've seen them also and as you thought, to steep for me.
What were some of the prices you've seen?

The cheapest I've seen is Bud's Gun Shop (online) for about $759, but that's all blued. In shops I've seen the stainless slide model for $900-$1100 depending on the shop. That's a lot for a basic .45. But the one I fired was NICE.

About the same prices here in Colorado. Haven't had the chance to shot one, but sure would like too..

My first time out renting different handguns before I purchased my first, I picked out an H&K USP Compact 9mm. "I'll try that one."
My friend was in the lane next to me and saw me take it out of the range bag. "You might want to take that back, you'll like it too much. They are steep too."
He was right on both counts. I eventually did put it back. Opted for something about 1/3 the price.

H&K make a quality handgun. The mag release always throws me off though. They put it under the trigger rail on their guns.
-
I'll probably never get one because spare mags are $65 a piece.

I've got a USP Compact in 40sw, and a USP Tactical, which is a full-sized .45 w/ threaded barrel, o-ring on barrel and match trigger.
My compact is a stainless gun (two-tone), while all Tacs are black. I could sell them both for about the same price right now, if I waited for the right buyer. Stainless USPs of all sizes and calibers are still made, but no longer imported to the US, so among the HKnistas, there is some collectable value. (Ironically, the compact was my first handgun, and I didn't know any of that at the time.) The compact was my daily carry gun for several years, until Sig released the P220 compact.
The ergonomics are good, but if you like them, you should handle the new p30 or hk45. Much, much improved. Still overpriced a bit, but like the comparable sigs, etc., they'll outshoot and outlast most of us given reasonable care.
...And there are sources for cheaper mags. ;)

CDNN has the mags much cheaper (they also have police trade-in USPs). They've got them for my USP 40 for $12.99, since we are limited to 10 rounds. They're just a little more than Glock mags at the gun shows.
I got my USP for under $600 just after they came out, before they switched the barrels to polygonal. It's a great gun for IDPA style and can be carried cocked and locked. The hammer can be cocked while the safety is on and the slide can also be cycled. The mag release is a little peculiar. It's a little long for my thumb to reach, but I can change the mag faster using my trigger finger than I can change a Glock mag with my thumb.
