President Barack Obama has used a live Q and A session on Tumblr to highlight Australia's gun laws following the latest mass shooting in the US.

The blogging site rolled into the White House on Wednesday with the president fielding questions from students in a session hosted by Tumblr founder and CEO David Karp.

During the chat Obama revealed that being unable to implement basic gun control reforms was the greatest frustration of his presidency.

"We're the only developed country where this happens. And it happens weekly," he said.

"Our levels of gun violence are off the charts."

Obama said Australia hadn't had a single mass shooting after the crackdown on gun violence in the wake of 1996's Port Arthur shootings.

The US had a lot of "soul-searching" to do on the issue, he added.

His comments came hours after a gunman shot and killed a student at an Oregon High School.

That incident followed shootings in Seattle last week and Eliot Rodger's rampage in California last month, which left six dead.

Obama also answered a range of questions about college affordability and reducing student loan debt.

But in lighter moments, the 44th US President also offered some personal insights into his plans after leaving the White House.

"I'll be on a beach somewhere, drinking out of a coconut," he said.

The White House has previously held similar social media events, with the president answering questions on Reddit and Twitter.

Karp and Obama kicked off the session with a fist-bumping selfie.

Trust me when I say you don't want them !!!!!!
I wish we had NZ's or Canada's laws  at min..

"We're the only developed country where this happens. And it happens weekly," he said.

And yet the crime rate is still dropping in cities where guns are regulated the least. Go figure!  ::)

If guns were the problem, shooting ranges should be carnage zones.
I wonder why the nutjobs go to gun free zones instead??

mental health is what is needed to be looked at more   yet  nope  dose not happen

the economy is always talked down  so everyone things it is in the shit  ( ya it is not good however they could be more positive )

they give this mass shooting air time  yet Suicides  have a general rule not to talk about it as it creates copy cats
how about cutting back the reporting or not naming.

also how about they report more good news stores  as well

The cowards are afraid to address the real problem, which is crime and screwed up individuals.
But most of them vote Democrat and the anti's don't want to offend their base.

Not just mental health, but the treatment of it with psychoactive drugs.

From what I've read a high percentage of these shooters are being, or recently have been, treated with them.

something I forgot to Add

they keep going on about no mass shooting / killings since Port Arthur in 96   done by a mental person that was not licensed  and was in illegal position of the firearms he had.

there also was another on back in 2002 at  Monash University in Melbourne, where a bloke shot and killed 2 people and injured 5

then you don't need guns  in 2000  The Childers Backpackers Hostel fire 15 people lost there lives,

however the anti's seem to forget these facts all the time..

we have been "Lucky"  not to have another one  there are so many crimes  committed with guns and criminals still have them  and they don't know how many are out there

the only ones they know about are us LAFO's  as we have them registered  and we get inspected ( I have been a little while ago )

You can't just give them sugar pills, these people need real treatment.
Some of their brains are on Planet Orange.

Just controlling someone's blood pressure is a 'try this, OK, try that' game.  Trying to get someones brain to work right is even harder because more often than not, you have a non-compliant patient.
