Post by: jaybet on July 04, 2014, 04:15:36 PM
I know...it's ten or more  years too late but we finally had some live video footage that we could cut up into music videos. This is our first.

Jay,

I don't know crap about guitars. What are some of the hardest big hit rock songs to play? I always thought "Legs" by ZZ Top would be. But when you watch them play it, their fingers hardly seem to move?

I not only down loaded it, I subscribed to your YouTube channel.
I didn't even do that for ZZ Top .  ;D

Thanks guys! All of this footage is from a one-night show so there are some songs with clams in them (bloopers, bad notes, etc.) Trying to sort through and get the best stuff.

Tom, thank you. We're going to post more...in fact a new one today, so there will be new videos coming out for quite awhile.

Bill...there are a few of things going on. First, the hardest music (I think) is Dixie Dreggs or anything that is jazzier, or stuff like Queen, Foreigner, Kansas, etc. or precision stuff like Skynard.
ZZ Top has some difficulty to it but it is in Billy Gibbons' technique in the studio. He is a master of "finger feel"- making the strings ring the way you want them to. Live, they just bash their way through everything and if you're watching it that's what you see.
Another aspect to being a great player is to play everything efficiently, which makes it look like your hands aren't moving as much.
Lastly, for this conversation, is virtuosity. Some stuff is just too hard to play because the original guitarist is just so damned accomplished. I'm thinking Steve Morse, SRV, Joe Bonamassa, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani....they can just play more and better than anyone else.

I am not an overly accomplished guitarist myself, but your assessment is spot on, Jay, IMHO (as if my opinion were needed  ;D  ;) ).

When I lived in Illinois, I used to work across the street from Washburn Guitars. If I'm not mistaken, they made the famous white, fur covered guitars that spun around in the video of the song "Legs".

I love when the babe gets out of the car, she does a complete 360 so you can check out her ass. (3:40)

So she's the one who has, "legs tied to her fanny. And a big set, that drives the men batty"?

Did ya ever cover this one? (one of my favorites)

Nope, not in this band. We used to play it a lot when we'd have parties and big outdoor jams. It's easy and everyone likes it, but in night clubs it's not always good here in the NE.

As much as we like to do what we like and insist on it, we still cater to what the venue owners think to some extent...keeps the work coming in.

It's just like carpentry...always a value judgement.

That's cool.

I just always thought it was a good bluesy Southern Rock type 'o tune.

We used to do that one at our weekend tailgate party jam sessions.....classic southern tune.
