I am looking for ideas for an item I can make out of wood to sell at a health/dental care for kids charity.
I honestly don't know what to build, any ideas?
help :o
ps, the pen/box, car holder, and magazine rack is a no go as someone always donates said items... granted mine would be bad ass, but its already been vetoed.

bat house... mosquito control

Kids charity? How about a dollhouse or the old ball in tilting maze? Earing keepsake boxes? My wife got a small wooden keepsake box with hidden compartments that was interesting.

I second Les' suggestion of a bat house. Would be a great science project also.
It is amazing the good they do in a neighborhood and it might lead to a few new chiropterologists. :D
Here is a link to some guidelines for building one, if you haven't considered it before

Here is a link to the google search page for "bat house plans" to give you an idea of that they would look like.

Come up with a classy "Bat Manor". :D
Good luck with whatever you decide.

In this neck of the woods, custom bird houses are a hot ticket.
Some I've seen look like miniature models of Victorian homes....and sell for hundreds of dollars. When our son was going through chemo last year, a local doctor bought one that looked like an old church (at an auction) and donated it to the oncology center's collection (they collect bird houses to place outside the center's back wall, which is glass).

Knowing the kind of work you do, I'd second the rocking horse. But I would want to see pictures before you donate it.

did the rocking horse thing years ago for a shriners auction years ago, it was still there last time I was. It took weeks to build, as almost every thing on it had to be glued up in sections and rockers were bent wood laminations. I did think about making some wood bowls on the lathe, but the bowl blanks I can find local suck and are priced well like 22 ammo. I want to build something you would buy for yourself or to give as a gift rather then something to just donate. I also like stuff to be used, so art pieces are out, never been my thing. This is also something that you have to take home with you in black tie so smaller is better.

You are talking some good money there. Wood framed mirror, curio shelf, or barrister's bookcase. These are all items that can be used in a professional office. Consider charity identification and date included on the item as recognition of what they have support

Good Ideas, m58....but a bit big to carry..
TAB, maybe you can include a voucher for a delivery in your truck?

The event is a 5 hour drive and people will be traveling from all over the west coast. Has to be easy to carry.

How about a knife block with ceramic inserts so that good knives are sharpened as they are taken out or replaced ?
