The Beirut Barrack Bombing (October 23, 1983, in Beirut, Lebanon) occurred during the Lebanese Civil War when two truck bombs struck separate buildings housing United States and French military forces.

A truck loaded with explosives crashed through the security perimeter of the United States Marine Corps barracks. In the explosion that followed, 241 United States military personnel were killed: 220 Marines, 18 Sailors, and 3 Soldiers.

I was on active duty in Germany at the time. I had to pause and think about what else was going on back then. We "invaded" Grenada two days later. This place will tell you a lot about any year. http://www.historyorb.com/events/date/1983
