This is pretty cool. An Antipode is the geographical 180 degree global opposite. This map allows you to click and drag the crosshairs on one side of the map to any location on Earth. The other map will then show you the geographical Antipode of it. Basically, where you would come out if you drilled a theoretical hole through the Earth at that location. For example, for Vietnam it would be Peru. For New Zeland it would be Spain, and so on. Antipode locations would make for the longest airline flights. Kind of fun to mess with.

So it's kinda tough to dig to China after all?

That is what made me want to post this. I've been hearing that since I was a kid. Even made a movie with that in the title. Remember the "China Syndrome". If it took place in this country it would be more accurately called "The Indian Ocean Syndrome".

Yes, me too but I had a junior high teacher show us on a globe with a sharp pointing thing. He stabbed Michigan with pokey thing and it popped up SW of Perth Australia!
I stopped digging after that! ;D

I compared latitude and longitude once, and thought Phoenix would come out opposite of Christmas Island, near Indonesia. It turned out that was opposite of Bogota, Columbia........
Actually that is wrong. It's in the middle of the Indian Ocean, southeast of Madagascar.

As an aside, IF that tunnel could be dug and all the problems over come...like having a tube that could be evacuated of air and a "car" that could be, say, magnetically kept centered in the tube, and the heat abated...and what every else might arise, the time to make the transit from one side to the other would be 42 minutes.
The car would free fall accelerating to the center of the earth in 21 minutes and them decelerate going away from the center for the next 21 minutes...with no propulsion other than gravity. Of course, maintaining that tube would be a bit costly.
Now..rather than go through the center, if you did the same thing with a secant tunnel, a tunnel going from one point on the surface to another point on the surface, with the same type of tunnel environment, the transit time would, again be 42 minutes.
NY to SF in 42 minutes.

Opposite of me is the middle of the Indian Ocean. I expected it to be China after all the stuff we heard as kids.

Fine if you can evacuate the air as you said. Talk about a "collider" if you dropped something in the tube at both ends at the same time the final closing velocity at the center would be about 74,000 m/h

Please stop, you're giving me a headache!

I figure if we can do one tube, we can make a pair in tandem...and set them to only one direction to avoid collisions.
With no fuel costs dropping the cars in as fast as the other end can be cleared would be the most cost effective setup.

You'd need too much unobtainium to make it work, Solus!
The Core...one of the single most stupid movies of all time. I'd give Gravity an honorable mention...that one made me yell at the TV...

The newer Total Recall has "The Fall" that goes back and forth from Great Britain to Australia. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhpwxL_tWEQ

No doubt a tube through the "center" is not only a LONG way off, it is not that useful either...not much in the Norther Hemisphere..where most of the travelers would be based goes to any other place that would be a serious destination.
But the Secant Tube might be much closer in the future....Think hubs like airports...NYC to Chicago to Dallas and SF...all 42 minute legs and not too deep and without the major effects of the earth rotating like any tube through the center...except pole to pole...a very low traffic route anyway.
