Title: Looking for LCP Carry Options
Post by: brushmore on June 24, 2015, 07:40:12 PM
I have decided to upgrade my carry gun from a NAA mini-magnum to an LCP.  I carry the NAA mini in my front pocket.  So I tried that with the LCP in a Blackhawk pocket holster.  It fit and is easy to draw but the printing was quite obvious with a huge bulge.  I normally dress in Docker type pants and a tucked in polo shirt.  On top of that I have a thin build.  I've always used the front pocket carry but I think I might need some other options.  So I am looking for some ideas for holsters that might work for me and my new LCP.

Also, any particular suggestions for defensive ammo?  So far everything I have tried seems to work well but just curious what others have found worked best for them.

when I first carried my LCP (I currently carry a G42 which I can shoot better) Florida statutes at the time were pretty specific on not printing.. I modified an Andrews Pistol pocket with a kydex flap, that rotated out of the way when the pistol was gripped, which did a good job of alleviating printing... when I modified an Andrews for the G42, I used the technique from Recluse holster utilizing a slit down the spine of the holster, so your hand can grip the frame, but still have a fairly large section of holster leather to block printing

from tests I've seen on the internet, most of the .380 using the older 90grain Hornady XTP bullets make the 12" gelatin test... that's what I carry in the G42

this will give you an idea of what the slit allows.... check out the Recluse line of holsters... this is a repurposed Andrews

I almost always carry mine in my front pocket, just in a plain old Uncle Mikes butsometimes I use this:

which of course is ultra comfortable with a pistol of that weight but doesn't allow for a tucked in shirt.

Tom and Tracy made mine.  They changed the design from the photo for me.  They squared off the rounded area under the grip and trigger guard, so the holster and gun will not rotate in the pocket.  One of those pictured in the first and second line is actually my first one.  Occasionally it will still rotate in loose suit pants, but in dress pants and jeans it stays put.

I carry it in my front pocket, or in my rear pocket.  In the back it does print, but think of wallet in either case.  I like front pocket, because with my hand on it ready to draw nobody knows I am coming out with a gun.  In the rear pocket it is a natural draw that they think will be a wallet coming out to meet their demand for my valuables ... SURPRISE!

I haven't carried it yet but when I put my LCP in the Blackhawk holster in my front pocket I looked and there was no obvious printing. It may be because of the loose fitting jeans with larger than normal pockets. The only problem I anticipate is that there may be enough room for the whole thing to rotate. I haven't even shot the gun yet but one of the types of ammo I have is Winchester Train and Defend D loads. I can't remember what else I have but I'll probably try out some Gold Dots too.

I carry my LCP in my rear pocket using a crossbreed pocket rocket. It's not the fastest draw, but it is well concealed and always with me. As a note, my gun looks pretty rough after sitting and sweating on it everyday for the last 8 months. I normally wear tucked in shirts and Carhartt pants. I prefer to have one of my Glocks on my hip, but I needed better concealment for work. It gets the job done.

Thanks all for the ideas.  I think I'll try some other holsters before I give up on the front pocket carry.

Just to be clear, I have no problem with the Blackhawk holster in cargo type pants or things like that.  It's just in the business casual dress where it's a problem.

Here's something that increases your carry options.
I had one on my Kel Tec and it allowed me to carry even in nothing but skivvies.

A little late, perhaps, but this is what I've used for a number of years now.

This is for a M&P but they make them for all of them. Ambidextrous, adjustable, stays in pocket during draw..
I like these alot..
