Whoever is ham here are you participating in Museum Ships Weekend? If you have a shortwave radio you can listen in. So far, there are
76 79 85 87 94 ships signed up and we've a month and a half to go. We'll probably hit 100+ ships by then. The ham club for the Battleship USS New Jersey sponsors this each year.
Last year I had 34 contacts...trying for more this year. Shortwave listeners can have fun listening in but I don't know which, if any, of the museum ships has a QSL card going.
Here's the link: http://www.nj2bb.org/museum/ (http://www.nj2bb.org/museum/)
In the past I've spoken with people on the USS Nautilus, Queen Mary, NSS Savannah (US nuclear cargo ship) and a bunch of others. I never have gotten to the USS Missouri in Hawaii...almost, but not quite.
Anyone here ever stationed on or lives by any of these Museum Ships? Some of them have completely restored radio rooms and you can probably swing by and listen to what it's like to operate an HF radio like yesteryear. Here's the list so far this year:

Seems odd to see an "Iron clad" on the list.
-
First, I didn't realize there were so many museum ships. Boy did my bucket list just get longer.
Almost makes me want to get my HF antenna up in time.
Too bad the Redoubt submarine isn't on the list. Just read about it. Biggest museum sub a civilian can tour.
-
Tom I thought the sailing ships were odd and then they had a PBR added last year.
Alf, get the antenna up. Gee, 50-100 feet of wire and some coax....
I sent you a couple of emails directly with what I hope is some helpful antenna information....
-
The sailing ships certainly have good places for antenna
-
Don't have an HF rig yet - still paying off a truly stupendous and outrageous vacation last Christmas with all 3 boys - but I do have a Tecsun 660 so I will be listening in.

HI;
I am a No Code Tech, I do have the 6 meters capability and will get my rig ready by then just for some fun. N3NAZ

That's what I did two years ago. I was sick the entire time that I didn't have an HF rig set up. You will be sick too....I promise you. I got a used rig and a wire up and voila'!

More than enough time to get your General license if you do it now. Study on eHam, QRZ or any other number of places....you have the time if you hustle up right now!!!! I think you also have some voice privileges on 10M up to 28.500 along with the 6Meter rig.
MB used to be a Ham....methinks he gave all of that up. I think having communications ability is more important than ever right now. I've got a 15M, 20M and 40M wire in the attic and can tune in 17M easily along with 80M and some difficulty. No one around knows I talk all over the world on 100 watts....
I also read where the USN is training in the use of sextants again....I'm just sayin'......

I'm looking into an inexpensive SDR (sorry, software defined radio where all of the signal processing is done by software instead of hardware) based on a Raspberry Pi or Arduino. Cheaper than the $800+ new, but I may find a used rig at the Louisville Hafest. That's not til September though . . .
-
Hi;
RASTUS, I did HF work when in the Military and decided that I did not need to pursue it when I got my ticket. I use to monitor 14.313 and adjorning freq's - that made up my mind.
I am more interested in what is going on within 1-200 miles of the QTH that what Fritz, Sean, Pablo or Mohammed has to say !
-
I'll be at sea for it. The good news is that we have an HF rig onboard.

Maybe a generation back for $275-$350. Try QRZ.com, eHam.net, etc.

Yes but I find it cool talk with buddies hundreds miles away in the morning...not so much with the UHF/VHF.

Did you ever get to use an elephant cage? Those things really look imposing.

And for neophytes like me (who are interested, but not sure) you can listen to some Ham channels online.

Yes and no. Some of the short range repeaters can be found at http://www.radioreference.com/ but I am not aware of the HF frequencies being available on line as they are variable and not set up as "channels". Hope this helps.

Yes.... I was speaking in general terms, and not this enterprise specifically, and should have mentioned that.
Thanks.
-
Actually, yes you can listen onlne. There are several websites dedicated to shortwave and HF listening. You can even tune specific radios from your pc.
Don't remember the names of the websites, but I'm sure a quick search will find them.

I have explored this one a few times over the last few months (it may or may not work HF, I haven't got that far yet).

And this site has links to online SDRs

Those internet receivers seem to work pretty well. Takes a minute to get a hang of it.

I'm going to add a 40M/80M antenna outside this year. I've run a 20M/15M for the last couple of years outside (I break covenants on antennas for the weekend...my others are inside the attic). Both are fed with ladder line I run in to the house and then go with a 1:1 balun to bring in coax to the switch on the antenna tuner. If I have time a nested Moxon 10M, 15M and 20M or maybe just a 3 element Moxon...if I can get another fishing pole and build a hub.
-
Just bumped up to 85 museum ships.

As I follow this I remember my youth and all the hobbyists in our neighborhood. I had lost the bug, but now you guys are making me think of another hole to hide my money in.

OK. Last week I added 2 for a total of 87 currently set up. I suspect we'll but 100 in the next couple of weeks. May be another update tonight.
-
Got the cheapie MFJ 20M di-pole. Got to tune it, rent the lift, mount it on top the tower and run the wires. Maybe just, maybe I can get that done by the MS weekend.
Need a list of DRTV calls.

Also there will be some operating AM radio on 3880 KHz - 3885 KHz and 7290 KHz. Often using the ships original equipment.
Below is a link to a Ham listening/reporting service. People make a contact or hear a contact and post the callsign of the contact and of themselves. It makes it much easier to find a station you are looking for.
For instance, if during this time you want to listen to the USS Missouri for a contact you'd watch for or put a search in for KH6BB. Then you'd see what frequency they were last hear on.
http://www.dxsummit.fi (http://www.dxsummit.fi)
You can use this for any callsign.

Starts in 3 weeks. On Friday the 3rd 6:00 PM Central. http://www.nj2bb.org/museum/
(http://www.nj2bb.org/museum/)Ham guys got your antennas ready? Shortwave guys you can listen in.
Go to that link above and the ship's name has a link for most of them. You may want to visit one of them in your area during the museum ship's weekend.
Tom, you aren't too far from the Albacore. It's an interesting sub that was a test bed for modern design.
And you guys around Charleston, South Carolina, can visit the HL Hunley. The world's first successful combat submarine and check out the Ham operations there.
-
OK. Up to 98 ships. Will update later.
-
OK. Here's the latest list with 107 ships on it. I anticipate a few more. It starts 7PM Central time on Friday. Most ships will fire up on Saturday-Sunday.

2-1/2 hours before kickoff.
-
OK. Anyone besides me participating today?
-
I'm a bit bummed..... after all this time getting amped up to try and listen in online, I had totally forgot that my wife had made reservations for us to be out of town camping at Ft. Clinch SP in NE Florida all last week...with no wifi or internet access.
So, I missed out :( ....but on the plus side, I got to see the grand-kids have fun at the beach. :)
-
Well lit wasn't a bad plan B you had.
The conditions were not great. I managed to make contact with 30 ships. We didn't have good F2 skip it was more like sporatic E. Contacts mostly on 20 meters but I made a few on 40 meters.
I did manage to talk with the people at the HL Hunley in Charleston. I thought that was cool.
However, the highlight was to finally talk to someone on the USS Missouri using the ship's original discone antenna and wiring.
-
Thank you. this can be not one I actually have used before. appears like fun.
-
OK some of you dodging Ham Operators our there. Now you got PLENTY OF TIME to get ready for Museum Ships Weekend 2018. 5-1/2 months in fact.
1st Weekend in June. I know a some of you wanted to participate but...did not have an antenna...did not get the license yet....was going to listen on shortwave but...and so on, and so on.
5-1/2 months from now. Get ready.
