They say what you don't know can kill you. A lady I worked with had a brother who died from breast cancer. Everyone should know that men can get it too and are much more likely to die from it. Especially if your doctor thinks you won't have it since you're a man. Men only seem to get very aggressive types of breast cancer. The last statistics I heard was 1 in 200 men get it but that was several years ago. It's probably gone way up just like it has for women.
-
My eldest daughter has a friend with it, who's mother died of it. Her friend is 26 and has had both breasts removed already.
My daughter is doing several fund raisers including something called the Breast Cancer 3-Day, which benefits Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund. Every advancement in breast cancer research, treatment, education and prevention in the last 25 years has been touched by a Komen for the Cure grant.
If you are interested in contributing, she has a website where you can pledge funds...it's http://08.the3day.org/goto/IRENEgoesPINK
She's also doing a local fundraiser where my band is performing free - she's really been hit hard by her friend and friend's mom, and once you start talking about it, seems like EVERYONE has a breast cancer story or worse....
-
A friend of ours has had a partial, full and then a third operation on the same breast and it doesn't look good for the future. Say a prayer for those who have, had and will have cancer and even harder for a cure.
God Bless,
Richard

The above is a link to a fact sheet about the connection of the Susan G. Komen Foundation with Planned Parenthood.
Do you know that many Komen affiliates give grants to Planned parenthood and other abortion providers?
Do you know that Nancy Brinker founder of the Susan G. Komen Foundation has served on the advisory board of Planned Parenthood of Dallas?
Do you know that there is compelling scientific evidence that having an abortion greatly increases a woman's probability of getting breast cancer?
-
Thanks for the link...I've forwarded it to my whole address book.
Also, please take the time to visit this link and click the pink button to help others. It doesn't cost anything but your time, and may save a life.

I'm not going to argue about whether UNplanned parenthood is better or worse than planned parenthood, but that's a "Right to Life" group making all those claims. I trust them as much about the subject as I trust PETA when they talk about hunting. Whether anything they say is true or false, I'm automatically suspicious of any special interest group that's for, or against, ANYTHING. Except the NRA because I've been a member for over 30 years.

If you have one hand on your mouse and one on the Backspace button you can clicky a whole bunch of times in a short period.
There was another site where they bought feminine products for battered women living in shelters when you click the button. That's a worthy cause too as they have to get away from their man so fast they can't pack what they need. Another site bought food for the hungry when you click. I lost the address for both.

At the top of this same page that the link goes to, you can select several different tabs that are pages for different causes (needy kids, school books, etc.). They all run off sponsor money based on the number of clicks. There is even one for pets.
Thanks.

I have provided another link about the link between abortion and breast cancer.
Perhaps you can summarily dismiss all of these other organizations too.
Perhaps there are persons of good will in this forum who don"t want any of their money to an organization such as Planned Parenthood which murders innocent babies in their mother's womb.

Right on Runstowin, I don't like my money to pay for the murder of unborn babies. Saw a video of a baby's reaction during the abortion. Saw the "silent scream" as the baby was being sucked out of the mother's womb. If a woman does not want a baby, don't get pregnant. Illness, rape or incest is another issue.

No, I can't summarily dismiss ALL of them. Just a couple of them. Like any that have the words "Catholic" or "pro life" in their name. One person's medical decisions shouldn't be dictated by another person's religious beliefs. And many of the "pro-life" groups are "anti-life" in some respects. They think a mother should die from complications, rather than have an abortion that can save her life. I believe as most sane people do that two deaths are much worse than one, and therefore favor women being able to choose whether to save their lives or not. Other people believe a woman and her fetus should both die instead of letting her save herself if so so choses.

You are being disingenuous, in my first post I made the claim that there was credible scientific evidence that abortion was linked to an increased probability of breast cancer, I did not make any religious claim. You have not refuted my claim.

Geez guys, way to Shanghai a thread. I thought this was a thread about a terrible disease and I posted that it hit close to home for us and one of my daughters was doing something postive about it and right away ol' runstowin-one-note has to turn it into murdering babies in the womb.
First off, the Komen organization does a LOT of good. So does Planned parenthood- providing free breast exams and mammograms for women....this is all about womens issues my friends, not about your beliefs. PP also provides counseling, medical exams, and contraception (oooh, I used the "C" word). So they ARE taking care of women and encouraging them to plan their families and encouraging a responsible attitude before pregnancy, as well as realistic options for women who are pregnant. They wouldn't have to do so much of that if there weren't so many parents with their heads up their asses that won't talk to their kids or aren't capable of guiding their kids on such things.
There are mistakes too. Kids make a lot of them. I'm not FOR abortion, but I'm also not FOR sentencing a kid to grow up living in a tractor tire with a blue tarp for a roof because mom has nothing or God knows what circumstance...OR because someone who could help WON'T help because they don't believe in killing babies in the womb. Of course once the baby is OUTSIDE the womb it seems to be a whole different story. It's amazing to me how many people who are so "one-note" about abortion don't seem to mind greasing a few kids if we manage to blow up some Al Quayda creeps at the same time. Don't fool yourself, YOUR money goes to killing kids every day.
Breast cancer is horrible and it's something we can help fight. You go ahead and fight anyone who doesn't OPPOSE abortion above all else, but I think in the grand scheme when you do that it's a negative sum result. Personally, I'm not smart enough to know what's totally right and totally wrong- it was my impression that life, people, this world and this universe are way more complicated than I can figure. In fact, the good Lord has told me so innumerable times. So I'm at the age now where I try not to judge so much, lest I be the subject of some judgin' . I have restricted myself to only ONE black and white issue in life, the second amendment. Everything else, I figure I'm not smart enough to make any pronouncements on.
There's collateral damage everywhere. I'm giving some money to fight breast cancer- who knows...maybe they will use a few dollars of it to hand out some condoms or something. I'm not going to risk another person getting cancer over it.
But...the wonderful part about being an american is you can believe what you want to believe and you can put your money where you like. So since you changed the subject, I've put my two cents in here.

The use of abortion when there is a medical reason for considering it is an entirely different issue from abortion because a person after getting pregnant decides that she does not want to have the child, or I have the right to do whatever with my body. In a medical situation where either the mother or baby will not survive or possibility that both will not survive, that is totally different issue. There a decision is arrived by the woman and her doctors based on medical need and facts. As far a being Catholic, the Church recognizes abortions in medical cases but not in oops I made a mistake last night, now I am going to get rid of this problem. A large percentage of us belive that prevention of unwanted pregnancies is preferable to abortion. The death of other persons like in death penalty is not condoned by the Church. Some of us believe in the death penalty but that is completly different issue than abortion.

Jay, thanks for saying what I was thinking.
The whole point of the thread was to spread the word about something and to try and help people that need help and to show compassion and sympathy / empathy to those going through a tough time because at any given moment any of us could be there too.
Some of us have already been in a situation where we have needed help and understanding from others, and when the opportunity comes along to do something good and give a little back we should jump at the chance.
My .02 worth. Hope it made sense.
Thanks.

My point in my first reply was to point out that there is credible and in my opinion compelling evidence that abortion increases greatly the probability of a woman getting breast cancer. I think that women should be fully informed about things that contribute to breast cancer, so no matter where a person stands on the abortion issue, there is credible evidence of a link between abortion and breast cancer.
By the way it was Jumbofrank who in a reply to my post started digressing off the subject.
-
I have been educated on several issues with this thread. That's why I come here. Thanks to all.

Your point is well taken...women should get the whole picture and hopefully they do. I'm no medical expert, but I do know that at one time they were telling us cigarettes were ok, and they were giving pregnant women thalidimide, so what gets published isn't always good stuff. And maybe I jumped runstowin too hard on that- I got confused. It seems to be happening more and more lately...
I have a bit of a personal aversion to zealots (not to insinuate that any of us here are such). When I hear a hint of one of those arguments about black-white, no inbetween I sometimes go off. I can't understand the whole concept that one shouldn't use contraceptives or shouldn't consider abortion under dark circumstances, yet we can let kids be born into horrible circumstances and pretty much let them wallow in it 'till their old enough to commit a serous crime then we can lock them up. That seems to be the SOP.
On the other hand, one of my daughters is in very early pregnancy and the sonogram picture looks just like me except that I have a goatee. I'd hate to think someone would short circuit a handsome devil like that.

Agree with you. Have you gotten the baby's guns and guitar yet?

I sent my daughter that picture someone had posted here with the baby-in-womb with AR...she loved that. The kid can have one of my guitars...hopefully I'll have to go out and buy more of them so each grandkid can have one.

Need to make sure you have enough for everyone.

"I have a bit of a personal aversion to zealots (not to insinuate that any of us here are such). " JB.
I dunno Jay. Remember what Barry Goldwater taught us.
"Extremism-in defence of Liberty, is NO VICE!"

Good point. I guess I was talking about zealots on particular subjects like abortion or religion or Ford vs. Chevy, Glock vs. 1911....that kind of thing. Liberty is all you've got 'till it's gone, then you've got nothin'.

Every person has issues that are hot-button issues. Mine happen to be abortion and illegal immigration. Though I look at illegal immigration differently than a lot of people that contribute to these forums and that is ok. I have seen several hot issues with different viewpoint expressed but none where a person is attacked personally. I love good discussions, not agruments and that is why I like this site.

A big +1.
This is not directed at anyone...just me rambling on while it's on my mind after reading some replies.
I'm not the type of person to try to force my views and opinions on others. They are mine and I have the right to them just like everyone else. And I try to listen to what everyone has to say equally too. And I try to do so with respect, but we all slip sometimes...it goes with being humans.
I'm not going to try to make anyone take a bite of my sandwich if they ain't hungry.....but I expect the same from them.....which is why I hang out here, everyone gets along.
Yes, too, the discussions can heat up quickly on some topics. Especially when some issues are seen in 'black-and-white' or 'cut-and-dry' points of view. And, there's nothing wrong with that as long as folks stay to the point and stay civil.
I wish more issues were an 'either-or' decision, but more and more issues are developing 'gray areas' these days, whether I like it or not.
Sometimes it seems like the ONLY sure thing is that some day I'll have to pay up, and answer to the Lord for what I've done with my life, good and bad.
Thanks for letting me drivel on........I like this place.. ;)
