Title: Return of Para Ordnance? No, but . . .
Post by: Big Frank on April 28, 2017, 03:04:42 PM
Remington just announced that they're making Model 1911 R1 .45 ACP pistols with double stack mags like the old Para Ordnance P14-45. The regular model has a 14 round mag and the competition model has a 15 round mag. Ive been waiting a long time to see if they would ever make the double stack models. I hope they sell good and stick around for a long time. I may have to trade in one of my Paras.

Rock Island has been making them for years, using Para mags.

I knew RIA made a double column 1911 but don't know if they still do. I wasn't aware it used Para mags. That's nice to know.

I looked a t RIA again and they do still offer high capacity .45s but with a 13 round mag instead of 14 rounds like the Para P14-45 and the new Remington high cap. If the Para and RIA mags do interchange I wonder why they don't have the same capacity? They're all full size pistols with 5" barrels. http://armscor.com/firearms/tac-series/tac-ultra-fs-hc-45-acp/

Nighthawk Custom has a double stack option for government model 9mm pistols but not .45s. STI still makes their 2011 .45s but a 13 round mag is 140mm long and they don't make anything bigger. Caspian Arms sells double stack 1911 frames but it looks like they're made for 9mm and .38 Super. I have no idea what the magazine capacity is since they don't appear to sell mags to go with their guns.

So it looks like Remington and RIA are the only real options for a double stack 1911 type .45 unless there's something else I don't know about.

I have a Para "Big Hogg" with an alloy frame.Had it out shooting about 2 weeks ago and started having trouble feeding ammo into the chamber. I thought it was the ammo but I have never had trouble with it before. Cleaned it good after I came home and started too put it back together.  Noticed a small crack on top of the right rail and upon closer examination found a one inch long crack from the rail through the frame down into the grip.
Took it to a gun smith to see if he could TIG weld it but he said TS.  I'v had it for more thane ten years, think they would give me a new frame?

I'd see if they'd replace it with a STEEL  frame .

Their 1911s are single stacks with 8 round mags.

Remington said they would honor Para USA's lifetime warranty. My alloy frame Para is 29 years old if I'm not mistaken. The whole gun rattles like a maraca but the last time I shot it there weren't any problems. Maybe you shot yours a lot more than I shot mine.

I knew they made 1911's, and they make (or at least import ) double stack guns.
I had the flu and didn't feel like looking to see if they actually did put the 2 together.

Doesn't happen often, been about 3 years this time.
5 days of feeling like crap, I'm about back to normal now.

Just got off the phone with Para USA and the are sending me a bag with some paperwork then UPS will be picking it up and going in for repairs. I think I will be getting a steel frame unless they happen to have an alloy one lying around or have a very good welder.

The wear resistance and strength are worth the extra weight.

The alloy frame Para double stack pistol fully loaded is supposed to equal the weight of a steel framed single stack fully loaded. I've never actually weighed them so I can't say for sure. The alloy frame pistol is nicer to carry because of the lesser weight but like Tom said it doesn't have the wear resistance and strength. I've mentioned before that my old Para frame with a Colt series 80 slide rattles like a maraca. The funny thing is the frame fits nice and tight on my carbine conversion unit.   ???

Back when I lived in Illinois, I used to get the Flu on average once a year. Usually always in the Winter from guys at work who would come in regardless of how sick they were. Sniffling, sneezing, and snotting all over the machine handles, and everything else they touched, along with everyone else.

Since I moved to Arizona I've gotten it once in 26 years. Something else I don't miss.

Just got my Para 14 back from the repair shop. they couldn"t repair it and they also said because it was made in Canada and was not under warranty. I had to send them $35.00 for shipping to get it back. It didn't go to Para Ord  but went to a place called "Sports world" in Tulsa Ok. So I filled the barrel with some cast bullets and I'm going to cut off the end of the firing pin and use as a paper weight.

I'm not familiar with the interchangeability amongst  Para's and other brands, (other than doing a trigger job on a single stack Para for a friend, I have not worked with them), but could you go through somewhere like Brownells and buy a bare frame and fit your parts?

Good grief, go to Midway USA and order a new frame !
Or Brownell's.
Trashing it out is a foolish waste.

My newest Para is my LDA 12.45 with a 3.5" barrel. It's a Para USA and covered by the lifetime warranty. They replaced the single spring recoil system on it with a dual spring set up very much like what's on the 3" barreled pistols. I think my P10.45 is a Para-Ordnance and not covered. My 13+1 frame from the first year they made them is definitely not covered. All the parts from a P14.45 can be stripped from the frame and used on a regular 1911 except for the magazine (of course), the mag release, the trigger, and the grips. If there's anything else that can't be used I can't think of it at this time.
