Title: never judge a book by its cover. place your bets
Post by: TAB on April 28, 2017, 06:49:00 PM
So today, I was taking the entire crew out too lunch.   No big deal, we were qll hungry, dirty and stunk of you know WORK.

So we went too this place were we can eat out side on the patio, the food is great, been there many times..  when I walked in, I said. "There are 17 of us, we would like too sit out side"   I got " are you sure you can afford too eat here? It averages about $30 a person and we charge 17% gratuity"

" is the manger here?"  " I am the manger"  I proceed too pull out my wallet and count 2k in $100s in front of him.

His eyes kept getting bigger as I pulled the hundys from my wallet.  " thanks for letting me know this is not the type of place for hard working men, I will make sure too pass that along too all my friends and co works."

Ended up going across the street.  I should note that this is just outside of portland and not bend where they have a location.

Can't wait too go bqck and talk too the owner, I am sure he will be more than thrilled.   Oh wait I don't have too go back, I am putting a kitchen in for the owner in august, I will just call him at home.

I already put in the call, no details, just waiting for him too get back too me.

So place your bets, pink slip or quit?

He probably cost the restaurant close to $600 today and who knows how much in the future. I'm sure the owner will be pissed. He may keep his job but should probably quit.

That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of since they wouldn't wait on a scruffy old hippie at a Chicago Aston Martin dealership, back in the 80's. It turned out to be George Harrison.

at least that and if they sent out a cute waitress (is there manager of restaurant tjat does not know this about large groyps of blue collar workers)that would have been a hundy just for her.

What really gets me, is we were not even going to sit inside(that would be rude as we were dirty, we were going to talk and most likely offend liberals)  we were going out of our way to be polite.  Hell given the money were going to spend there I could have said give us your best table.  Its a 4 month project, if we liked it, chances are we would be back at least 4 more tines during that time.

Oh well jim is gping to be pissed.

Likely she would have been covered in tats and staples, being it was in Portland.

Doubt if they can fire the mgr for this IN PORTLAND, but, yeash, the owner will be pissed no doubt!

Talked too him this morning( he owns like 15 bars/ restaurant so his weekends are busy)saying he was pissed was an understatement.

Having a sit down between the 3 of us Tuesday.  I really had the impression he was getting a pink slip until he said the 3 of us.

The best qoute from him. " that dumb ass didn't realize you made more that day then he does in 2 weeks."

From Portland on the Wilmette, to San Diego on the Pacific, a patchouli curtain has descended upon the West coast .

ok so we are all showing up for rib eyes Friday on the house...

and he got his last check in front of me.

"even if this costs me $500 too feed you guys, that's a fraction of what I would lose over this"

he is 100% right.

turns out the guy was a brick layer for 20 years, before he got into bars/restaurants.  so he knows just how much money skilled construction works make and understands "we want to eat god damn it!.

I knew i liked him when i was bidding his kitchen, now i know why.  the man actually earned his money thru blood sweat and tears.

TAB, what restaraunt?  I am up in Wilsonville and that area quite often (used to be everyday but I am working 5 minutes from the house  8) ).  My wife just inherited 24 acres out in McMinvile when her dad passed a few months ago and I'm up there 2-4 times a month.

I love it when Blue collar guys move up the social strata but never forget where they came from.  Only in America  :)

You have your restitution for this issue.  Good!

I just hope that this guy who's now unemployed is enough for you.  He may have been a good manager who made an error in judgement!

I worked in the restaurant and bar business off and on for a decade!  They're as "blue collar" as anyone else and nearly ALL managers come up through the ranks.

Restaurant workers have to deal with a lot of assholes!  More so than any other business I'd expect from my experience.

I too have rolled a grand in Benjamin's out to pay for a meal with my coworkers when I was younger than you are!  Pissing away cash was an art form!  The bar business was very, very lucrative!  I knew waiters in the early eighties making 100k annually.

Enjoy your win...but think about how it affects the other guy next time.

Showing off your cash is amateurish...

If you are in the service industry, you can not afford people like him.  Had the owner not taken steps, this could easily cost him 100k

I would suggest that if you ever have a problem with a meal in a restaurant that you NOT send it back to the kitchen...ya never know!

Oh!  And I'd skip the free meal at that place!

You just got the boss fired and he probably has friends...

17 guys with wives/ gf. Thats 34 people you lose, then they  tell thierfriends plus family.  Don't even get me started on yelp and Facebook.  100k is on the low side of things these days.  All because one guy said " this place is too good for you,"  while not exactly whatt was said, I can assure you thats how it was taken.

It's just money, kid...

I've made plenty and I'll make more..

Pissing off a waitstaff ensures a snot rocket in your soup!

Just saying...

Bon appetite

Pissing off customers insures a pink slip

Oh and by the way spiting in some ones food is a felony in this state.  This guy pulled a bonee head move and paid for it.

Reputation in the service industry is everything.

I wonder how many people that manager had "Chew and screw" before TAB got him fired.

I wonder if this manager lost their job because of the way they acted, or because they acted this way with a person the owner had a relationship with.  Timothy has pushed hard on this, but I will add to it:  We need to think about our actions and think about ourselves in a similar situation - TAB.  This wasn't a life and death situation, and while a question about being able to afford the bill may have been border line rude, it takes a certain attitude to take it this far without calling the person out on it first.

We have all slipped under stress or pressure.  I have, you have, TAB has, EVERYONE has.  I don't know what kind of day it had been for this manager, and how did this large group of construction workers look on his seating and staffing chart?  I have had cold storage managers call our logistics and even CEO on me for comments I have made on the docks.  What saves my butt?  The response has always been that they are out of line in the way they are treating drivers, and one time was a butt chewing, because what they did to me made it illegal for me to get the load to the customer.  We even get supported for pushing some of our customers, because their actions affect every other customer and their orders.

Think before you complain or whine!

TAB didn't get him fired. He got himself fired.

They had been open under an hour.  How bad of a day could ypu have had?

I have never lost my cool infront of a customer and I havd had plenty reason too.

Old saying, lose your head, your ass will soon follow.

I do want too know if it was because I knew the owner or not.

Yes, I could have let it go, and if it was just by myself I might have, but this happened infront of my employees and too my employees.  You never make an employer look bad infront of his employees.

If this had happened when I was a boomer, we would have drag his ass out and beat the shit out of him.

if you have been in that industry for longer then 2 seconds, you learn to deal with that or you go nuts.

given that he worked his way up to management, he has learned to deal with it.  he also should have learned that when some one comes in as a part of 17, you don't treat them badly.   if you can't server them, you say 'I am sorry but we can not serve you at this time"  you don't say "you can't afford this place"   more so too a contractor that is making more then he does in TWO MONTH that day.

I was very polite up to that point.   that's when every thing changed.

<<< nicest guy in the world, but I go from nice guy to SOB in about 2 seconds when you pull that shit.
