Title: Why Can't Toys Be Like This Anymore........
Post by: twyacht on September 10, 2008, 08:49:47 PM
Had to share, as my father sent this to me to remind me of a different time. Mattel used to be a "real toy" company, but alas,,,,this will put a smile on your face,..
Much better than some spongebob squarepants!

I don't remember the commercial, but if I was old enough to see it i probably begged for one. At the tender age of 7, I did get a 1911 that fired bullets you pressed into a spring loaded case. You then loaded those into a magazine (don't start!). I used to shoot at the metal living room clock.
I guess that explains why I prefer 1911s over anything else. Forty years of .45 :)
Found one for sale, $500: (http://static.zoovy.com/img/huckleberryib/W640-H480-Bffffff/I/100_2122_1.jpg)

These are all so cool and really reflect what a different world we're living in now, when it's difficult to even find decent squirt guns at a store with as gunny a name as Target. My dad still has his 2 gun Roy Rogers set in better condition than those at the Roy Rogers Museum.
Does anyone know if there's anything to this photo? I am a Photoshop professional and it looks like there been some work done here, but did Mattel get into guns?

I Had one of those ;D I was going to post about it as I read this thread. It was a toy that looked Just like an M16 same size as well, The bolt release and safety were just molded in not movable, as I remember it made some kind of machine gun noise. Another thing about the Mattel M16, it was this first toy gun I owned that was not metal. Does any one remember "Six Finger" ? it was a toy gun that 's barrel looked like a finger, you could shoot your friends with little rubber bullets.

I couldn't see anything until I hit reply. Now I see everything except the Mattel M-16. I found some pics. I never had any on these toys. :'(

I see the images that you posted. The one I put up looks more like a real gun that someone "stamped" the Mattel info on the mag area looks different than the actual toy photos that you posted. I think I remember my brother and I having those Marauders. Must have been late 60's /early 70's. My dad made sure we had a lot of toy guns, probably because of all of the hippies we had living around us. He wanted to make sure they never got a chance to indoctrinate us. I started shooting a 10-22 at 2. He'd hold it and have me pull the trigger. We were allowed to shoot in the desert before Feinstein.

All I see of page 1 is part of the first post. Then when I reply I see most of it below. And I can see page 2 now that there is one. This is so weird because I can read every other thread without any trouble and see all the pics and vids too.

When I was a kid I had a great big 45LC in stainless with two pairs of grips- black or pearl. It had six cartridges that you had to eject from the cylinder. Each cartridge had a brass casing and a lead-colored white metal "bullet" that came out of the casing. You would take the cartridges apart and put a round, sticky cap on the back of the bullet.
it was DA or fanfire....I LOVED that thing, and I really wish I had it today.

I missed most of these. For the cap guns I had, the caps came in rolls and they stuck out the top after being fired. Noise and paper shreds, my mom must be a saint. I would have love the whole sticky caps, fake bullets, tommy guns with burst or single shot. My folks needed to meet earlier and this wouldn't have been a problem ;)

Just got the Recon CS-6 yesterday for my younger one, he slept with the toy gun last night. He was up and shooting before the school. ;D ;D ;D
Extra mags and ammo in every toy store.

Same here.....growing up in the 70's, I missed out on the "good stuff". I did have a pair sixguns that had the side compartment that flipped up so you could put the rolls of caps inside. They were styled after Remingtons and made out of pot metal and were heavier than regular cap guns. A friend of my dad's made me a matched pair of holsters for them. At six years old, I was "Hell on a Huffy". I also had a double action that used the little red plastic rings of caps. The good thing was that I had an Uncle that owned a country store in our small town and he kept me well supplied with free ammo.
Man, sometimes I miss those days.............

Yes, $.10 for a box of 5 rolls of caps beats the crap out of $17 for a box of .45's ;D

And when you smash a boxful with a sledgehammer they're almost as loud as a .45. ;D That's one of the few things about my childhood that makes me smile.

Jumbofrank.. You and I were obviously on the same page as kids. Sometimes the sparks kinda stinged..but the result was worth it. ;D
I did that quite often.. along with rolling and twisting a big bunch of firecrackers together. Of course..had to put them in a can or other container to get more bang sound.. ;)

When I was a kid we spent part of the winter in AZ- in the area that used to be between Mesa and Apache Jucnction(I think it's just all part of Phoenix now) Back then our house was on the edge of the desert and that was where I started shooting and playing with explosives. It was firecrackers and M-80s mostly. We'd run around looking for holes under bushes and toss little demo charges down there to see what came out.
One day we had spotted a big rattler in a wash. We stood on the bank and tossed firecrackers at it 'till it disappeared. (I didn't say we were kind young men) Then we found a big burrow- almost a foot in diameter. We lit up a double dose of M-80 and tossed them in and BOOM! blew the entrance all open. Three seconds later a screaming badger demon came out of that hole and we stated running. i don't think it followed us very far, but we will never know. We didn't stop running 'till we got to my friends porch. Those were the good old days...ten year olds roaming around with pistols and explosives. /color]

I came across this the other day. With all the talk of youthful hijinks, caps, and explosions, this one should fit right in here.

I saw that big ball of caps and thought, "He's gonna need a bigger hammer." I laughed so hard I cried. ;D :'( I love it. When we didn't do a box at a time we took a single roll and rolled it up tighter so it didn't have the space in the middle then taped it up. I think it was louder that way. .22 ammo with the bullets pulled was fun to play with too. Powder to burn, cases to mash, and bullets to shoot out of out a slingshot. ;)

When I was in high school, we had a 'cannon' behind one end-zone that we fired at football games. It was basically a piece of 2" pipe, 2' long, welded to a square of 1/2" plate. We would drop a couple of starter blanks down the pipe and then drop a piece of solid rod that weighed about 8 pounds down the pipe on top of the blanks and it would go boom. Well, one Friday night it was wet (had rained all day) and apparently water had accumulated in the pipe and everyone thought someone else had emptied the water out of the pipe. We had pre-dropped a few blanks down the pipe, and when the team took the field, we dropped the weight and.....nothing. So one of the guys dropped in a few more....dropped the weight...and......nothing. Yes, you guessed it....our young dumb asses dropped a whole box in and released the weight. Well.....it finally went BOOOOOM.....and.....like a mortar, the 8 pound weight went about 20 feet in the air, landed right on top of the crossbar of the goal post (like it was scripted), and left a dent that was still there until the goal posts were replaced a few years ago. One guy went to the hospital with singed eyebrows and a few blisters (the rest of us went to change underwear) and the cannon was officially retired for the season. 8)

Ah, yes, I remember roll caps.
They were officially banned from our house after Mom vacuumed up a forgotten roll. As they hit the impeller of the Kirby, they started going off, and they continued as they went into the dust bag, creating a most excellent fire.
Quick action saved the vacuum cleaner, as well as the house, but the issue was in doubt for a while.

I can see everything okay if I use Firefox but then I can't reply, quote, delete or modify a post. I finally saw the picture of the M16 that Mattel never made.

I mean the photoshopped real M16, not the Mattel Marauder toy.
That wasn't photoshop, it was molded into the plastic, the selector and bolt release did not move, but they were molded just as shown in the picture, it was even 39 inches long ;D

It looks like a real M16 with a real M16 magazine in it and moving parts in Fuzzdaddy's picture, not the toy that's in the other pictures. Some people swear up and down that Mattell DID make real M16s too. I think they made some pistol grips that said Mattell inside them and when somebody saw that they started a rumor that Mattell made the whole gun. I still think this is just a photoshopped picture of a real M16 that someone put the Mattell name on as a joke or to back up the rumor. Look at the magazine in this picture compared to that monstrosity on the Marauder.

The one I had looked JUST like the one in the picture YOU posted, Not the out of scale one. The reason Mattel was contracted to make the early stock parts was that they were at the leading edge in plastic molding technology at the time.

I think this is actually what Mattel put out. My brother and I had them too.
