I was just given a smith and corona 03-A3 30-06.
the guy that gave it to me said there was a safety issue
so i called a gun smith and he said it was an issue and he could fix it but i dont wanna pay for that ,so here is the problem any advice would help...thanks
when you chamber a round you have to pull the bolt back even further to flip the safety switch over the gun smith told me you should just have to flip it over

sounds like a locking lug
Could be a very worn out chamber/ throat as well, but with out seeing it, I can't tell you.

It's probable the sear engagement surface on the firing pin assembly has been cut back by someone trying to do a trigger job; the striker isn't being held far enough back for the safety to engage. A new assembly is fortunately one of the cheapest and available parts for the 03.

Scooter,
I received your personal request for a source for 03 parts, but couldn't get the reply to go through this system.
So I'll answer here.
I believe the best person in the business for these parts is William J. Ricca. (billaricca.com).
He is a one man operation, so have some patience.
For quality, honesty, and anything else that matters, I cannot rate him higher.
First of all, make sure that this part is what you need.
If you are uncertain, take the rifle to someone qualified to diagnose the problem.
If you can, borrow the striker assembly from another 03 and try that.
Good luck.

Oops,
Make that billricca.com. NOT billaricca.
