Title: Pocket Gun
Post by: tman on September 12, 2008, 06:37:49 PM
What would you suggest for a 9mm pocket gun?

I don't have one and won't reccomend it but would certainly look at Kahr.

The Kahr pm micro 9 is a good pick, as well if you can find one, a S&W 940 j frame revolver, also a little bit bigger, a Ruger sp101, last the Rohrbaugh 9 , but it is a 1,000 dollar gun at least. These are all true pocket guns. Depending on the size of the pocket, a glock 26 can work also.

I have shot larger Kahr pistols but don't presently have one and would also recommend one.  Quality is very good.  They seem very dependable (will find out more as I am looking for a micro myself).

Kel-tec PF-9, smallest, been around long enough to work out the bugs, affordable, and lifetime warranty.:: unless you want to drop a $1000.00 on a Rohrbaugh 9, shop around, there are great ones out there.

You did mention "Pocket" .. so the others can get too large too quick unless IWB works for you.

Just my .02 cents.

Kahrs PM 9 is smaller than the Kel. I don't know enough about either pistol to make a recommendation,  *Best Joe Friday voice* "Just the specs."

Because I don't have one and haven't shot one. I only reccomend things I see in action with my own eyes. They seem to be great guns and I would consider it and go look at it. I just can't say you should run out and get it. If I did have one I could tell you how good or bad it is, and not go by hearsay. That's all. Nothing against Kahr. I think it would be my first choice in a pocket 9.

Kahr is awfully "proud" of their products,$600+, in this area. I have been shooting my partners Kahr9, and offering to buy it, which of course, he refuses. :-\

It's a very good pistol, the OP didn't mention price range, so my rec. was .02 cents worth.

Touch, feel, shoot, strip, "fondle", as many as you can, let us know what you decide on.

Scroll down to the 9mm section and you'll see a very detailed analysis. also mouseguns.com is helpful.

Good Luck.

Kahr prices are probably due to the limitations on what you can buy in MA.

The are produced in the Worcester area and one of a short list of firearms available for sale in MA as "NEW" guns.  MA kept some of the gun ban regulations in force after they were dropped nationally.

The Rohrbaugh 9 is the only true "pocket 9" out there..... everything else really needs to be carried IWB.

I carry a Glock 26, and I love it....... and for the price of the Rohrbaugh ($1000) you could buy two brand new Glocks.

I sure do wish someone would clone an LCP or P-3AT in 9x19

I believe that would be a P-11...or the PF-9

I always thought Glocks as big fat guns, I'll take a look at the 26, thanks.

Ruger LCP. Love it. Conceals well. Enough power for daily carry. See video below.

If you can wait until November, check out the Taurus 709. It's a slim 9x19 single stack, single action with a manual safety. The action is based on the Millinium Pro, but without the second strike feature.

Step 1: Load gun.
Step 2: Point at face.
Step 3: Point away from face and fire.

Nice job.  ;D  That reminds me of the slightly larger 2.34mm rimfire SwissMiniGun that's still made. It's about a .09 caliber with a  fraction of the power of a magnum pelletgun.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIq3JkoABYM  http://www.swissminigun.com/home.html

The bad thing about a true pocket gun is when you forget it's in your pocket. Sometime after I got dressed one day I put my hand in my pocket and, lo and behold, there was my NAA mini .22 magnum. It weighs less than my key ring or change purse and I forgot it was in there until I touched it. That was kind of scary even though it wasn't loaded. I just wanted to see how it fit in my pocket the night before then forgot about before I got undressed.  :-[

A friend of mine used to carry a High Point in his jacket pocket, one day he left the Jacket at his Moms house and she washed it and ran it through the drier. Then gave him hell about his "clunky" jacket  ;D

As I have said before, Kel-Tec is just not given much respect around here (literally and figuratively). I took my PF-9 to my local range after getting it Dura-coated and listened to my buddy, a retired Air Force pilot and crazy 'Nam Vet, give me hell for relying on it as a carry pistol. UNRELIABLE!!, he shouted. Cheap and unreliable....

I loaded all 4 mags with Speer Gold Dots, my carry round, and beckoned him onto the line to show me how unreliable it was. He burned through them as fast as he could, then, clutching his well wrenched wrist, went to wash up. I went through another 50 rounds of Win. white box target ammo without problems. Point made.

Spend more if you must. After all, it KICKS with full power loads, but you will carry it when others may be too large or too heavy. The trigger reset is long, unlike most 9mms, and takes a little getting used to, but it is not a deal breaker in my opinion.

Let us know what you end up with and how you like it.
Mac.

Mac, I am one who gives much respect to my P3AT, I broke mine in rather "hard", well,..... there is now a waiting list to get one around here, and I had to go to Tx, to get mine shipped.

I use Speer and Cor Bon DPX for carry and WWB, or Magtech at the range.  All I did was a fluff and buff and it goes where I go, with the belt clip.

Although not designed for 25 yd. 2" groups, at 7 yds or less, I don't even have to aim,...Point and squeeze... ;)

Hope your Air Force buddy had an "enlightenment",

The Colt Mustang and Colt Ponys are also great pocket guns. They are bringing a premium these days though.

Just MY opinion,  I would suggest a J-frame with crimson trace.... I know you didn't ask but I couldn't help my self.
