I think JumboFrank will agree with me me that while that is really cool, the M240 is a better weapon.

I would always rather have .308 to .223 any day man, what are you thinking?

Exactly how he should  ;D

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M240

M240 not M249.

I doubt it.  The 60 just vibrates, no real kick.  Easily shoulder fired.

I'll take two please and more ammo than you can shake a stick at

First of all... where's the new rifle?  ???

Secondly. I like M60s in general but the 2 halves of the reciever will eventually loosen up. There are only 4 rivets holding it together. All in all the M240 is better than the M60 but I would still rather have an M60 unless I wanted to put a million rounds through one. The M240 probably isn't balanced as well for assault firing ala Rambo and it's about 9 pounds heavier than the lightweight version of the M60. But it's also built from solid slabs of steel instead of sheet metal. It's a trade off but the M240 is better in some ways, like duarability. I like both of them for different reasons.

I've replaced so many M60 parts that someone else neglected, that I still know the National Stock Numbers for 3 parts right off the top of my head 25 years later. As soon as I forget them I can remember my mom's anniversary and phone number.  :)  The only M240s we had back then were co-ax machineguns on tanks. They had sawed off pistol grips and were solenoid fired. They pointed wherever the main gun on the tanks did. I hardly ever had to work on them, but some of that had to do with the small numbers of them compared to M60s/M60Ds, and the fact that they weren't leftovers from Vietnam still being used in the 80s.

One time they brought an M240 into the shop that some DAT (dumb a$$ tanker) had taken the buffer apart and stacked up all the cup washers facing one way instead of altermnate directions. The operating rod went back so far it damaged the buffer housing. A little work with a file and putting all the parts together right and I had it fixed. That problem isn't possible with the M60 but others are. One time they brought in a "runaway gun". Some Grunt took the sear out and put it in upside down and backward. When they cocked it, the gun shot until it was out of ammo, without the trigger even being pulled. I assume someone broke the belt off before it fired the whole 9 yards. Neither design is foolproof and they certainly aren't d*mned foolproof because some d*mned fool can screw them up. Sorry about the long post but thought you guys might want to learn more about these two guns.

Don't know the 240 but know the M60 a little bit.  I'll take one of these new ones for end times with 3 or 4 ammo and barrel carriers.

Rambo's Rock N Roll looks good when shooting blanks.  Would like to see him on a real combat patrol out for several days and shooting that way.

Yeah, Hollywood always makes it look cool.  I was just commenting on the video of all those rounds going downrange nonstop. I would love to do that one day, as long as I don't have to pay for the ammo  :o

Th 240B is better I think then the M60, but I honestly like the m249 better for carrying and fighting with. The M60 and M240B are better for being attached to trucks. The Special forces guys carry the 60 and 240B, for the effect of being a larger element when caught out in the bush. The m249 is more controlable thus making it, for me, more of a killer. I just about got my ear drum blown out cause of a 240 going off next to me.

Kev,

With your experience I can but give your opinion great weight, but (hey! you KNEW it was coming ;D )  I will go with the 60, especially the lightened SP version as the automatic for my squad.

If ya want to know why, it's cause the Ma Duece is too heavy! ;)

LOL That is true. Yeah the 60 does come in more compact package, and I understand the use for it, but mostly I would put them on top of a truck, but then you could with your 50. There are just certain aplications where they all preform better or worse.

The problem with the Ma Duece is according to Geneva Convention shooting someone with the 50 is a war crime. You can only take out their equipment, so the way to get around all that is you need to shoot at their water bottles or gun. Hence why on cnn you dont see the soldiers using 50's, their sgt changed them out before the inbed or told them not to shoot it unless they have to when the cameras are around.

We were told the same thing in the 70's So wasn't my Dad in Korea. "The .50 cal is an anti EQUIPMENT weapon"
Of course common sense points out that a UNIFORM is equipment  ;D

I was told you couldn't shoot a person with a .50 caliber but you could shoot, for example, the truck behind them.
If they were in the line of fire... oh well.

I was watching a show on the Military Channel about the SEALS.  Not sure when it was filmed.  One guy was firing what I think was an M60.  Anybody see the show today?  If so, was it an M60 or M240.  Did some training some years ago with SEAL Team 1 from California, bad dudes.  I'd go into combat with them any day.

DM,

I saw it.  It was a special ops version of the M60 (E I think).  They cut the stocks (you know, made the part you put to your shoulder smaller ;D ) and strip em down (this is to make them lighter ;) ) as much as possible.

BTW I typed this real slow for you.

;D

How did they cut the stocks? They only stick back a fraction of an inch past the buffer. You can't shoot it without a buffer unless you want to blow it up.

Did it look like this?

No, did not look like it.  Biggest difference being that the weapon in the show had a forend covering the barrel.  So I am wondering if the SEALS prefer the M60 over the M240, why?  An SEALS out there that can answer.  When I was on active duty we had light 30 cal machine guns, great guns but not as versatile as the M60.
