Title: Henry lever action .22lr
Post by: MAUSERMAN on December 22, 2019, 11:16:46 PM
Guys I just received an early Christmas gift. It?s a Henry 22lr lever gun. It?s a sweet light little bugger, and I can?t wait to shoot it. Anyone out there have any experience with these little rifles? good or bad let me know

I have one, and really enjoy it.  I put it in the category of a 10/22 in lever action.  Accurate enough for plinking, bunnies, squirrels, etc..  It runs everything I have tried in it, from the cheapest to the best.  And, it has never jammed.

I wanted one for several years before I picked it up, and only wish I had done it earlier.

ENJOY!!!

I've had my eye on that rifle for a while.  They were on sale at work during the black Friday weekend and I could not justify the cost but have my regrets.  I'm looking at the Frontier style with the Skinner peep sights anyway, carbine...  Tree rats, bunnies and such...

Congrats!

They are quite common in .22 side matches at the Cowboy action matches. There is a guy that does an action job on them called the "Henry soft stroke" which makes the action even easier to work.

It looks like I?m a to some fun then. I?m still recovering from an injury so 22lr is just the ticket. That action job looks interesting  :)

I've only heard good things about them. Congrats. The new Garden Gun smoothbore .22 LR shotgun almost made me wish I had a garden (someplace my neighbors weren't up my @$$) just so I would have an excuse to buy it and shoot it. Now something else has caught my eye, a NON-NFA lever action .410 they call the Axe. It's a firearm in the Shockwave class with a 5-round mag, but the MSRP is $970.

https://www.henryusa.com/news/lever-action-axe-410/

I'd much rather have the 12 gauge Remington V3 TAC-13 which has an MSRP of $915. I'll take a 6 round 12 gauge semi-auto over a 6 round .410 bore lever-action, which would mostly just be a toy. Well, they would both be used that way, but the V3 TAC-13 may be my next home defense gun in a few years. It's nearly 13" shorter than my 7 round Remington 1100(-ish) 12 gauge with a barrel length of just under 19". It's a much handier size with 6" less barrel poking out. The way the Versaport gas system works is really cool. 3" shells cover some of the gas ports in the chamber, while 2.75" shells leave them all uncovered. It's self-regulating based on shell length and works with anything from 2.75" target loads to 3" magnums.

I didn't mean to hijack the thread, it just happened. :-[ All the Henry rifles seem to be good. If the forum is still here, let us know how it runs.

The axe looks interesting but the price is a no go. I?m seriously looking the the all weather in .357

The Axe looks fun but it's a no freakin' way for me. The all weather .357 is a lot more useful. The same goes for the .44 Mag. and .45 Colt. I believe .357 would have the biggest percentage gain in velocity and energy in the 20" barrel. If you already have a companion revolver in .357 it makes caliber choice a no-brainier. You could use it for deer hunting or whatever, and practice with the .22 the rest of the year. Shoot as many tree rats as you want to. There will always be more.

The Axe looks a lot cooler.  For me, though they'd be fun, they don't have a lot of utility.  I don't know anyone who doesn't like the look of cut down levers and they are cool...just not really practical.

The .22 Henry could use a big brother to hang out with and be a bad influence. Isn't that what big brothers do, or was it just mine? A .357 Henry would be a really nice rifle to have. For the short ranges typical of the woods in a lot of places a .357 Magnum is powerful enough for deer hunting. Or you could do like one guy at work did; set up at the side of the road with a 7mm Rem. Mag. and some high powered glass. Eventually a deer will cross somewhere between one end of the road and the other.

For years I thought I would get a 4.2" stainless GP100 if I ever got another .357. The 6" would be nice too but with the full underlug it has 5 more ounces of weight I don't need, or want to carry. I always wondered how much it would cost to get that milled off and just have a normal ejector shroud. Too many ideas and not enough money.

Well guys my Henry is a little laser. Dang thing hits everything We aimed at. We set up clays and spent shot shells, we also put up cans of shaving cream. Needless to say it was ridiculously fun. In one afternoon we shot an entire brick of 1100 rounds. I pulled a bore snake threw it and just kept shooting it. It?s definitely a hit with the family. Now I?m looking at the octagonal barrel golden boy for myself  :D

I have never heard anything but good things about the Henry.  I hope you get that Golden Boy you want.

Ever consider getting it in the 17 HMR?

Once more a Henry rifle lives up to it's reputation. Good. Every family should have at least one .22. Most of us grow up shooting one anyway. Having an accurate one would help build the confidence of any shooter hitting what they're aiming at.

When I read the part about the boresnake it reminded me of something my dad told told me. When he was young and dinosaurs roamed the Earth, he and the other boys shot an old .22 so long without cleaning it that instead of shooting out bullets, it was squirting out lead wire. ;D One of his old .22s we still have in the family looks like Larry Potterfield's favorite single shot .22 rifle. That may have been the one he meant. It's the same type of Winchester single shot, but I can't say if it's a model 60 or not since it's not at my house anymore. It does have the same plain trigger guard and not the kind I see on most pictures of 1902 and 1904 models. It's in non-firing condition but it's a one of a kind since my dad inlaid the stock with pieces of cow horn.

My dad still an old sears single shot 22 that he got way back in the day. He says around 1961 is when my grandpa gave it to him. We don?t shoot it anymore. We don?t want it to break. I still got my 10/22 that was my birthday gift back in 1987. I?m 43  ;D

It?s more sentimental for him. We?d take it out but he?s not willing to chance it.
