My phone of almost 6 years is finally dieing. I have replaced the battery 4x now. The headphone jack now always thinks one is connected so i have to use them to talk on the phone. I tried cleaning out the port and blowing it out with canned air. No dice.
While 5g is not here yet, it will be soon. Is it worth the extra $100 for 5g vs the standard 4g phone? I am not looking at flagship phones. I am not spending $1000+ on a phone. Nor do i want one that will not fit in my back pocket. Thinking about a s10e. They do make one that is 5g. Its $600. Which i hate, but its better than $1000+

I looked into 5G, but it's A LOT MORE EXPENSIVE. And no one really could give me a good answer when it will be ready in my area. All I got was stuff like, "soon", and, "limited service at first". So my wife and I went with 2, 4G Motorola Moto E phones from Consumer Cellular. They are nice phones, and cost only $80.00 each.
I picked up a couple of cases and screen protectors for a few bucks more. So far, so good. They're fast, and have nice cameras and features. For what we use them for they're perfect. We were able to keep the same numbers, and I downloaded my contacts and photos from my old phone. I can't see spending hundreds on a state of the art phone. I figure these will be ready to be replaced by the time 5G is in place. And who knows when that will be for sure and for certain.

It only is about $100 more for the phone. I spend 4-6 hours on my phone every day. Its all work relayed.

5G has more to do with data than voice. If your primary use is calls, then don't go out of your way for 5G.
Personally, I wanted 5G Home but that's not happening for a while, even though V promised would be available in my area a year a go.

For me. 5 g is litterly 1 cell away, which they are schelgded to upgrade in December. I doubt they will have it done until next year, but that is the plan. ( the tower is maybe 400 yards from my house) i am just wondering if it is worth the hype or is it going to be a new "shiney" that i can not use.

How much more is 5G monthly service? Or is it the same.

zero cost, just $100 more for the phone

That's not bad at all. For you it might be worth it.

So i could not sleep and did some research. It is basicly what i thought. There are 2 types of 5 g, one is a "piggy back" that is kind of like the 1st dsl systems. ( Basicly to get high 5 g coverage, for marketing) It will be faster, but not much. The other is 5g mm which is significantly faster, but has very limited range. It is also very limited in spread nation wide.
I have seen a few reports that state the piggy back systems would run at 4g speeds if they had the same use. Some have said the new faster speeds will go down next year as companies start rolling out 5g phones. Its hard to get a read on exact numbers. As i am seeing lots of "imo" and not much real science. The one thing i do believe is that telecom companies make democrats look honest. So dont trust the coverage maps, as you may have 5g, but its capped by the 4g towers its running off of. Mny have mentioned its like the 4g and 4g lte where on paper the lte was faster, but it took significant time to make that happen.
I wish there was some one that actually had some letters after thier name that actually did some real world testing.
I know its out there, just not been able to find it. I am sure the cell companies, know exactpy what it is in real time, but we all know there is a better chance of hillary, and the bidens to share a jail cell.

........So dont trust the coverage maps, as you may have 5g, but its capped by the 4g towers its running off of.......
That's what I heard as well. You can go out and buy a true 5G phone, and they will be more than happy to sell it to you. But that doesn't mean you'll get 5G speeds. It's bit like when we were kids and the first color TV's came out. Over half the programs were still only broadcasting in black and white. The support to run the product takes more time to develop, and get in place, than the product itself.

WTF is 5G ?
My connection had it and canceled it,
or changed his password, I haven't asked,
But I never saw any difference either way.

The tinfoil hat crowd said there was something that was gonna suck out your brain with 5G. Not being able to afford good tinfoil means I’m susceptible to brain sucking cell phones.
I bought the new iPhone SE cuz it’s small and I copped two for $450 bucks total when they rolled out in 2020 deal. So far so good! No, it’s not 5G!
No issues but they put out a new upgrade about once a month but my last three iPhones did as well.

All - ALL - 5G patents are owned by the CCP, mostly through Huawei. I for one will never go 5G.

Strictly speaking for personal device speed, the only need I see for 5G would be for internet use. Even with streaming video, etc., I don't see where the extra speed will make a marked difference for a phone...there's not that much video data needed like on a large screen TV that uses streaming video. Now, if you hook up your home internet to it...as in a hotspot...maybe that will make a difference.
Most likely the big deal is speed in congested areas. So my perception is that it benefits phone companies and densely packed users. Otherwise not of much use to me....unless I am missimg something relevant to me.

For cloud based engineering software it might be a thing. Lots of companies are going that route. It eats up data, but uses lesa computing power.
-
Cloud based is going back towards the old mainframe model. That should not affect the need for 5G speed. You send a few inputs in and the machine at the other end crunches out the numbers and sends you a report and a few charts back.
I was in the old "mainframe wars" back in the 80's when the users of that kind of software fought to get it taken from the IT departments and put on individual machines. We used to be bottlenecked because the reports had to be printed at a central location. We had a blazingly fast 56k connection to send the reports back.
Eventually processors got fast enough to support multi-million lines of code and iterative software designed to run complex simulations. I had been running simulations on a baby Cray in the Houston office and really complex ones on a Cray in LaHabra (except Thursday's when they ran payroll!). Then Digital put out the dax workstation machine which was quick in the day and after the 486 processors hit things really started taking off on the desktops.

F%ck it.
I know point and click. ;D

Well my phone died yesterday. I bought it dec 29 2015.
Sadly no one had the phone I wanted in stock. So I had to buy a cheap one until they get the one in stocks. ( s10e)
The only thing I see better about the new phone over old is the USB type c. It does not care which way you stick it in.

I was going to say something about my "girlfriend" but then my brain took over and I decided against it. ;^)

the real question is does she liked it the same way as your wife

In my case, they are both the same. ;^) Otherwise, I would probably have a few .45 cal. orifices that I was not born with.

When your memory starts going that's definitely the safest route. ;D
