WASHINGTON – The District of Columbia can’t limit the guns its residents buy and own, including semiautomatic weapons, the House voted Wednesday.

Legislation pushed by Rep. Mark Souder, R-3rd, was adopted 266-152 with 85 Democrats joining 181 Republicans in voting “yes.”

The bill, which the Senate is not likely to act on this year, would repeal the D.C.’s semiautomatic handgun ban and overturn a city law requiring that firearms kept in the home be locked and inoperable. It would allow residents to buy guns from licensed dealers in Maryland and Virginia and repeal some registration requirements

On Tuesday, the council voted to allow residents to own most semiautomatic pistols and removed the requirement that weapons be stored unloaded and disassembled or secured with trigger locks.

“Washington, D.C., has been the murder capital of the United States 15 of the last 19 years, and the other four they were in the top three. Let’s don’t act like what we are doing is making it dangerous in this city.”

Paul Helmke, former Fort Wayne mayor who now heads the nation’s largest gun-control organization, said the bill “will endanger public safety in a city that is already a target for terrorists.”

Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said it “will allow dangerous people to stockpile dangerous weapons, and it will make it harder for the people of D.C. to combat gun violence in their community.”

So law abiding citizens are "dangerous people"?

Talking points

Wouldn't it be nice if a reported actually did his job and asked the obvious question "So Mr Helmke, as this law only applies to law abiding citizens are you calling them dangerous?"

I think he got the right words, wrong context. it's harder to combat violence (armed hoodlums) in the community if the law abiding citizens are unarmed. am I right????

Doesn't US law provide for a safe and healthy working environment for anybody?

We do have such laws in place here in Holland.  :P

Ah, now, there's your problem: politicians don't think, they leave that to asses, because asses have larger heads.

There are only 3 reasons to support anti gun laws
1) because you are stupid, gullible and to lazy to to basic research on the question . Stupidity is the only excusable reason , dumb can't be helped.
2) You want to impose your will on an unwilling population, such as some form of genocide, or enslaveing the population to a tyrannical form of govt. You can't get away with that sort of thing if every Tom, Dick, and Harry has the power to veto your plans. As Mao said, "All political power comes from the barrel of a gun." and if the PEOPLE have them then govt. remains the servant of the people, not the other way around.
3) You are in league with the Robbers, rapists, and murderers, for a politician this would mean they are paying him (or her) off either with cash, services, or loot. Like the way New York politicians are in bed with the Unions ( Mafia).
To sum up, if you support gun control you are either an Idiot, a Traitor, or a Co conspirator.
