Title: National App Day
Post by: Big Frank on December 12, 2022, 03:36:43 AM
Happy National App Day, December 11th.  #AppDay  #NationalAppDay

Go download an app and think about how apps make life easier. Or more difficult. It's a matter of perspective.

Yesterday instead of my computer waking up immediately, I had to fiddle with it for what seemed like an hour just to get it to boot up, and to restart it. When it restarted there was nothing on the taskbar, not even the clock, so I restarted it again and kept tapping F12 to get the boot menu to come up. I ran Dell SupportAssist Startup Repair, then scanned for any bad hardware, then did a system restore to the only saved restore point. That seemed to take an interminable amount of time. All in all, I think it took me about 2 hours to get from a sleeping computer, to one that was awake and functioning. It should have only taken a few seconds and my sign-in. I wonder if anyone makes an app for this s***?

My desktop and laptop both like to use 100% Disk and 100% CPU, along with most of the memory, running crap I don't want them too. It happens at startup and when I'm streaming videos too. I think my desktop was running a Malwarebytes scan at the time I had it programmed to, and there's no way to stop it other than holding the power button in until the PC shuts off, and hoping it doesn't take months to get everything back to normal again. But my laptop was running Windows Features Experience Pack and I couldn't stop it in Task Manager. no matter how many time I tried to end it. I already removed the Widgets that were hogging resources and driving disk usage up to 100%, but the Windows Features Experience Pack it comes in is still lurking in there, and I need to get it out like I did my desktop. Malwarebytes normally takes about 18 minutes to scan my whole computer while I'm using it, and most of the time I don't even know it's running. But I still think that's one of the things that caused the problem. Also, I shut off a different program that was  running at start that didn't need to. That helped lock everything up, I think it was on my laptop. Anyway...

Happy National App Day, Everyone!

You can cut out some of the crap that starts up by going into taskmgr. (Ctlr-alt-del, chose task manager, or start button and type "takmgr". When it comes up it will show you the processes. At the bottom left is a button for "More details". Click that and look at the tab labeled "Startup". You will see the programs that start up every time you boot the computer. Those that you don't want/need, right-click on and choose "disable". This might give to a faster boot time. Also, if you can, swap your hard disk to an SSD (Solid State Drive). That will speed your boot time TREMENDOUSLY.

Hope this helps.

Some of the stuff you can stop from running at startup by going to Settings>Apps> Startup. But I check in Task manager too. Then if I have to, I go to the last tab, Services, click anything, right click, and Open Services. I've done that to shut down and disable a lot of programs that were running that didn't either show up in Task Manager, or couldn't be stopped from there.

I'm definately getting a SSD in my next computer unless I'm poorer than poor. There may be room for one along with the HDD in this computer. That's what my army friend, Sarge did with one of his old computers. The OS is on the SSD and the HDD is for storing backup files. I'll have to see what I can figure out when I crack mine open to put the graphics card in I bought for my last computer. My warranty is up so I'm not afraid of voiding it by opening the case. I opened it up and vacuumed and blew a bunch of dust out once. I'll dust it out before I put the new/old card in. Then I can see if it has slots or brackets, whatever it takes to plug in another drive. It's a good thing my roommate from Germany over 40 years ago is my friend, and knows about this stuff, because I don't get inside computers enough to know what's what.
