I’ve been wanting a Fujifilm X100-series point and shoot digital camera for many years. Unfortunately they have become very popular as jewelry for social media “influencers” and hollywood types, so they’ve on permanent backorder for 2 years. Some ebay sellers are offering them for 2-3x MSRP. No. Just…no!
Occasionally one shows up used at B&H Photo (my go-to when not purchasing locally) but you have to be quick, because they literally sell within minutes of being posted. Well, the other night at work I was checking out used cameras at lunch, and there it was! Immediately pulled out my B&H credit card (12 months to pay with no interest) and bought it.
What I got was a Fuji X100F, 24 megapixel camera with a fixed 35mm f/2 lens and the same sensor they put in their interchangeable lens cameras, all wrapped up in a gorgeous retro-looking body. The cool factor of this thing is off the charts, and it takes amazing photos. It’s going to take a while to learn all of its tricks, but that’s half the fun.

While not being anywhere near as much a camera guy as you, that seems to me like such an excellent package. Have fun with it.
-
I'm not much of a camera guy myself but I do respect the Fuji name. Fujifilm used to be seen everywhere, like Timex was for watches. I really dig the old school camera body. It looks SO much like the old film cameras most of us grew up with.
-
We drove down to Newton, MA today to go to a camera show. So many nice, old film cameras for sale. Bought a couple cheap cameras for our display and some photo ephemera, but didn’t bring a lot of money (on purpose). It was nice seeing how many young people were there who are discovering the joy of slowing down and shooting film.
Too bad the weather was crappy, since Minute Man National Historic Park was on the way home. Another day, it’s only 45 minutes away.
Newton’s a funny place. So many gorgeous, expensive homes, such crappy roads. You’d think they’d be better, given the tax burden the residents have? Oh well.

Thinking about the photo show. It is very much like going to a gun show, only without the beef jerky.

Gun shows are like strip clubs.
You get to see alot, touch a little, but nothing ever comes home with you.
The camera rabbit hole is one I have been avoiding for a long time. I already have too many hobbies and not enough time/money.

I've been digging that rabbit hole since the '80s. Getting pretty deep at this point.

Took it up to Old Orchard Beach, ME last weekend. Along with an old 110 camera I’ve been itching to try. It was a good day.

I haven't seen a 110 camera in a long time. Sometimes I miss my Pentax 110 SLR. When you develop pictures from film you have something you can hold in your hand that makes it feel more real than looking at an image on a screen IMO. Even if it came from such a small format. I still have a Kodak Advantix camera I bought to replace that, but the cost to develop film for that one was more expensive, especially the wider pictures.

The Pentax 110 SLR is on the “to get” list. I’ve found a couple sources for 110 reels to develop the film myself. Still need to figure out the best method for scanning. Would prefer to use my film scanner, but they don’t make a 110 carrier for it. If only I knew someone with a 3D printer…🤔
I also have a Kodak Advantix camera. Took it a lot of places with me back in the before time.

Alf is stepping up again!!!

The 110 carriers arrived and work perfectly with my scanner. Scanned some of my wife’s 110 negs from the ‘80s and they look great (for 110)!
Received the images from my Minolta 110 SLR (sent it out for developing and scanning) and it works just as well as it did when new. Now I need to get the rest of the supplies I need to start developing film again. It had been so long my developer when belly up.
Thank you so much for doing such good work, Alf! I hope you come up north for a match soon. I owe you a lunch.

OK...all talk and no pictures posted!!!
Let's see some pics!

Great pics. Now that it's in digital form, I wonder how hard it would be to "remove" the powerlines from in front of that church building?

Pretty easy, but I won’t. Not a good enough photo for that kind of effort. There are much better images I took on that roll. This one was readily available.

So how best to go about transferring slides to a digital format? Negatives if they exist or the actual slide?

The slides can be scanned. Do you have a lot of them?
-
That's one funky looking camera. I never saw a 110 like that before. It's very interesting.
P.S. I just looked at it again and this Van Halen line from Panama came to me, "Hot shoe, burning down the avenue." My mind is so weird sometimes. It makes these kind of connections. ;D

Multiple hundreds to scan.

Multiple hundreds to scan.
With that many, you might think about one of the services that will transfer them for you at a cost. There are automated machines that can scan multiples very quickly and with minimal human interaction.

When my dad passed my sis and I decided not to keep his slides which numbered in the thousands. We sampled some and they where mostly artsy-crafts. (Mostly jeweled eggs which he was an expert in and floral arrangements). We had even more prints and a lot of other junk to deal with, but I now regret not keeping them. I eventually bought an auto feed print scanner and spent a year scanning in his and my own prints. Money well spent.
Anyway, here’s a list of slide scanners. Highly recommend doing it yourself if the number is >100 or so.

Thanks. I'll look through what's available on the list.

I Found a Unicorn! A long time ago I read about a lens called the Vivitar Series 1 90-180 f/4.5 Flat Field Macro (rolls off the tongue). It came out in 1975 and is legendary for its image quality and sharpness. One came up for sale not long ago in Nikon mount (they made them in mounts for all the major camera brands), and I just had to get it. Without further ado, the lens!
First up is the lens mounted on my film Nikon (F2A). That's some 1970s deliciousness right there:

Here it is extended to its closest focus distance:

Mounted on my digital camera via a lens mount adapter:

Some test photos I took with the lens on my digital camera:

Extremely happy with the lens so far. The rig weighs a ton, though. OK, it's around 5 pounds, but I'm not as young as I used to be. I'll shut up about camera stuff now, since this is a gun forum.

Hey, go ahead...blather on about cameras. I do the same thing with ham radios....
-
I love it. I do some fair work getting pictures of the grands with my cameras, but not enough to afford what you're doing.
Occasionally I luck into some shots. This is my #2 grand, 8th grade band, outdoors, sun behind her. Shot from 120' away with my Canon SX520. One secret is using a monopod, the other is this is a great P&S camera with a very long lens and good image stabilization. That and I'm willing to take a 100 shots varying exposure and other settings just to get one good one. I'm afraid I'm not the expert like BAC and get all the settings right for that 1 shot, like in the days of film.
-
If we only talked about gins, we'd eventually run out of things to talk about, until something new comes out. Which I'm not ready to talk about yet.
-
It worked out so well with the 110 that I got its little brother, the Mark II (on the right). I don’t have a problem!
-
It's only a problem when you can't afford it. If we ever hear about you selling your body on street corners to support your habit, then we'll know you have a problem. ;D ;D ;D
