I know that my life in funeral service influences my point of view, but through training and practice I learned the importance of ceremony and memorial. I'm confident that almost everyone lurking here is aware of the passing of Jim Scoutten. We all also know of the differences of opinion between Michael Bane and the Scoutten team, but we need to also recognize what Jim did for our sport and in working to protect our freedoms.
I have been very disappointed in the Outdoor Channel and the Scoutten production team. First it was days, then it was weeks, and so far I have not seen any recognition of Jim's passing on the station, the show or the website. In searching I did find an obituary that was more of a press release, and a death notice that his body was handled by Neptune Society.
WARNING, I am climbing up on my soapbox:
There are some very basic stages of grief, and society has found a helpful process to work through these in a healthy manor. Not all groups and families do them the same, but when you step back you will see a commonality. As we each consider our demise and state our requests, we need to remember that the funeral/memorial process is for the living. It is a time and series of events that allow survivors to transition from a life with you present to a changed life with your memory.
To each of us; famous, famous in our own mind, or basement dweller, help your family by sharing your story. Share you favorite life events and stories, write down important and trivial episodes in your life, share your favorite memorial services and events you have attended, make sure it is known what were your favorite Scriptures writings, hymns or songs, etc. for a time of remembrance, and leave room for your family to plan and carry out the event THEY need to honor you and your life well lived.
Many think that my SASS handle, Coffin Filler Mike, is about old west gun fights, but it is a play on words from my former life. A career that was a passion that I have recognized more after moving on than I was aware of when practicing.

A good observation. Is there anything different for Jewish decedents as Jim was Jewish?

Not me. This is the first I've heard of it. Where, when, and how? I know some years back there was a false rumor about his death, which he promptly addressed by saying, "Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated!"... In his usual joking form.
But I no longer get many of the shooting programs I used to watch, because I no longer get the Outdoor Channel. I'm getting tired of paying what I am for Direct TV, and I plan to make a change shortly. I'm simply paying too much for too little. And I can't get the Outdoor Channel without piling on a bunch of other crap I don't want.

Yep....sadly there was not a lot of recognition. I posted all that was available at the time in the "Left The Range" section....and like you said, it was a simple press release.
I have seen situations where the family specifically requests no fanfare for passed loved ones and I've even seen in obituaries where the deceased requested no special attention before passing.
It's still only a month out, so maybe there is something in the works for the future.

Bill dump the satellite. You probably already have a Smart TV and if not, get one!! I know you have the internet at home because you are here!
I like the Roku based TV better than the Google or Samsung. Roku seems easier to use and has hundreds of free internet streaming channels(so does Samsung so take those two over Google). Various manufacturers, like Hisense which I like, offer platforms on Roku and Google TV. Whatever you get make certain you get full 4K on anything over 42" and a 120 HZ refresh rate is better than 60 HZ. There may be other platforms than Roku, Google or Samsung and probably are...I just have no experiece with them.
For the Outdoor network I pay around $6 or $7 a month. I have Amazon Prime and I get the Amazon Prime Video for nothing on top of the Prime membership. Through Amazon Prime I added the Outdoor Channel and the Paramount Channel. So..I'm paying about $12-15 a month for Outdoor Channel and the Paramount Channel (so I can watch all the Star Trek and Tulsa King shows). Oh, and they all have YouTube access which you can do through the app or on the TV's internet browser...I use Rumble through the internet browser instead of Youtube since I can't find a Rumble app for TV's.
And with the smart TV's I also have an old time antenna connection of which I pickup 25-30 channels at the place in remote Arkansas and at my mom's in Louisiana I get 40-50 channels with some repeats. Grit, MeTv, Comet, Defy, and others are free since it is antenna and as a "plus" I get the local news. However, on the Roku there are some big city newscasts which you can stream 24/7 for nothing.
Dump that satellite service. It's too expen$ive and as you said, they force you to bundle which was the worst part for me.

Rastus, You can also get TOC via the Frndly TV package..... 40+ or so channels for less than ten bucks a month. We're getting ready to dump Dish.
-
Dump it baby!!!
How do you access that TV package?

Tonight's episode of Shooting USA acknowledged Jim's death. At the end John closed with "As Jim always said ...". This was followed with a photo of Jim and 1945-2023.

It's sad when personal era's of someone you respect are over.
BTW, Mr. Bane, how is your health? You better not have any plans to punch out anytime soon.
-
I wasn't aware of the passing of Jim Scoutten, or the differences of opinion between Michael Bane and the Scouttens. I've never had The Outdoor Channel or any related type of channels, and I've only seen brief videos of Michael's online. I've seen Jim Scoutten online too.

What, "differences of opinion"?

Yeah. Inquiring minds want to know.

Their way of reporting and evaluating were opposites. Jim was a mainstream media guy, and Michael is as independent as possible.

As in:
Jim: This XYZ pistol has excellent sights, great grip angle and a trigger.
Michael: This XYZ pistol has excellent sights. feels good in the hands and the trigger sucks.

Michael is one of the "grey beards" of the sport. He was in on or created much of the popular shooting sports. He is the ultimate knowledgeable insider whereas insofaras I know Mr. Scoutten was more of an enthusiast reporter...???...???
Mr. Scoutten's son is, from my observation, more of an actual participant than his dad was. He seemed to develop a better insight into the sport after his participation in the sport.

Jim (Thought bubble): How can I phrase this press release given to me to sound like it is my independent evaluation.
Michael (Thought bubble with a barely filtered mouth): How do I communicate that the bells and whistles are hiding these flaws without offending too many experts.
There were some other differences on how production should be done that was a real rub for Michael, but I will leave that to a discussion concerning how John handles the company moving forward.

I miss the velvet voice of Jim. John I’ve met and observed. He’s a hard worker. Not only has he made it a point to compete in matches, but has obtained RO status for USPSA and last year spent a weekend working the Nationals as RO on one bay. Though he doesn’t know my name, he always smiles and says hi. When is shot on a squad following his, he’d share strategies with me as we changed bays.

Indeed, on the grand scheme of things, the industry differences in opinion between Jim and MB are minuscule compared to the asset value they both brought/bring to the shooting sports in whole.
Just like several other shooting family members that have passed away over the last twelve months, Jim will leave a hole that is hard to fill.
I believe John will carry the torch well......just my humble opinion.

Good info, guys. I didn't remember Jim Scoutten's name, but remembered his face, and couldn't forget that distinctive voice. I never knew anything about him, because I only watched a handful of videos he made. He seemed like more of a media personality, than a gun nut like me. The "made for radio" voice never sounded like a regular person would while talking to you. Micheal Bane always seemed more relatable, more like one of us, and not fake in any way. But I can't really judge either of them by my limited experience. It's sad to lose anyone in the media on our side.
