Geothermal energy provides 2/3 of the energy in Iceland, and most homes are heated by hot water from geothermal vents. Lava destroyed some water pipes and the entire Reykjanes Peninsula, home of 30,000 people are now without central heating.

Been there…. Spent a year in the 70’s, my overseas duty gig chasing the Soviet hoards about 20 miles from Grindavik!
Most populated park of the rock.

Well, I was an E3 living on about 100 bucks a week before taxes. No vehicle, working a rotating work schedule in pretty much total darkness for the first five months!
Off base curfew was 2000 (8:00 pm) except on Wednesday when the bars were dry…
I did have a gorgeous girlfriend for about eight months of that year, she was a sailor who was American/Icelandic and raised there so I did see some beautiful places during the summer of 77.
Spent a good bit of time in bed IFYKWIM!
Blue lagoon was not there yet. The southwest coast is mostly rock where the base was located. There’s a good reason they tested the lunar rover there…
