I believe one of the problems we will face down the road is what the sheriff hit on and that is open sharing of information.  The first thing the federal agencies will do when a major event happens is shutdown public information.  They will pull the plug on the internet and on cell phones, ostensibly, they will claim, to prevent terrorist for coordinating their activities.

Want an example?  2/8/2024 A statement from the Ministry of Interior posted on X Thursday morning said in Urdu that, in response to “recent incidents of terrorism” in the country, cellular networks had been cut off “to maintain the law and order situation and deal with possible threats.”  Think some of our government officials are not above the same action?

So to address severed communication activity a general shortwave radio with SSB would be a good thing for people to have.  With a radio ya'll can listen to the HAM operators and CB guys.  Tecsun PL880 is about the best for around $170 or very nearly equivalent is the XHData 108 for around $100.  Then the GMRS/FRS would be good for neighbors within about a mile of each other....despite mileage claims the little handi-talkies won't get much further real world with real world clutter like trees, houses, etc....the range claims are generally mountain top to mountain top.  Unless...you get a GMRS with an external antenna and something in the 15-50 watt output neighborhood.

A digital trunked scanner may also be invaluable.  Which, I need one by the way.  I understand the dongle type SDR's can pair up with your computer for digital trunking and provide decryption as well...does anyone here have path to that you can share?

Having a couple of dogs outside will also alert you to nearby disturbances.

Those agencies using digital will go encrypted.  However there still quite a few, even some  large cities, who are still analog,  non-trunked.

Of course fed and states are pushing every agency digital by financing the cost..  they promote the interoperability, they down play central control aspect.

I sure feel better knowing they won't be sharing their information.....   :-[
