Gold as a long term, SHTF, investment comes up in a number of threads, so rather than seek those out individually.....
This is from today's ChartR. Admittedly the respondents probably weren't thinking of EOTWAWKI, but I think it's applicable as well. My feeling about a societal collapse is that with all financial investments being worthless, you can only store so many emergency rations, but land would be the long term savior to use for agriculture.

If you own a big chunk of land you can live on and defend against marauders during TEOTWAWKI, that would be great. If you have other pieces of land you can sell too, that would be even better. But gold coins are easier to stick in your pocket and take with you. ;) Ideally, you would have enough asets to diversify your investments. Some land, some precious metals, and something else too, like stocks.
P.S. I have a few savings bonds that I'm going to sel some day. I already sold some several years ago. I think they're all series EE and you need to keep them 20 years before cashing them in to get full face value. I think I read that other ones need to be held 30 years to get the full value. I don't plan on being around in 30 years. In the words of Kimberly "Sweet Brown" Wilkins, Ain't Nobody Got Time for That.

I have 174 acres in Wyoming I will be building a house on next year.

Anything can be stolen from you. I am concerned about a focus in real estate because they can tax it until you can't pay....it's happened before. Though I think real estate is good but you gotta have something around you can turn into cash to pay the taxes.

If there is an organized government to levy taxes, then precious metals might be a good thing to have on hand.
Whatever the currency, de jour, food is always good for trade or barter. Corn and potatoes are exceptional good items since they are so versatile. Thinking booze.

You zeroed in on where I am in the thought process. Most of what I have is in real estate. I hope to divest part of it in the next 12-18 months dependent upon world events...maybe sooner.
