Title: I need some help. I fell hard and my Colt commander rear site broke
Post by: TAB on November 02, 2024, 05:35:10 PM
I had a bit of an accident  today.    I fell hard on some steps.  My right hip is pretty bruised, but my  commander took a beating.   The rear sight is broke off.  It was the only thing damaged in the fall.   This was my 1st 1911 and totally started the sickness.

I have been looking for a few hours for a replacement, but I can't right one.  Close, but not exact.

When you get to a certain age the Prime Directive changes to, Don’t Fall.

Sorry I can’t help.  My 1911 I just take it to a smith I trust and say, change out the sights.

The 1st number is still a 4.

I remember when I used to say that as well. My avatar was taken when I was 49. I guess I needed to verify that I was still young enough to bounce back up.  I didn't bounce!

So there is nothing on Gunbroker, Numrich or Brownell's websites.  Like you said maybe cylinder & slide.

I want to keep it stock.   It's been on my hip that way for a long time and 20k+ rounds.

Hopefully your call to Colt on Monday yields success, but with their website sending you to MidwayUSA or Brownells I think you will end up on the phone with those two asking for help to get a Colt original or clone.

I'll still wondering how you fall hard enough to mangle the rear site like that and walk away from it intact.

25+ years competing in wrestling/ judo.   I didn't fall near as hard as one would think.

So after talking to a  cs rep at colt.....

One of thier gun smiths had one in thier spare parts.   They are mailing it too me for FREE.!

I heard that a lot of judo is about learning how to fall. After all that time, you should be good at it. I on the other hand would be hurtin' for certain.

That had to have been a real hard fall. I’d take to a local gunsmith and have them replace it.

I'm on 2 different blood thinners. I can only imagine how bad I would bruise. If I didn't break any bones. I take calcium pill daily because I've had osteoporosis for decades. They have medicine they give old women for it, but nothing for young - middle aged men AFAIK.

took me longer to take apart my colt than it did to set up and push the sight out and new one in.

this tool is built like a tank. all steel, must be north of 5# not anodized aluminum like most on the market.  they are on sale right now at optics planet for just under $130   they are normally $169.  yes, you can buy one for $100+ less, but buy once cry once.

My rear sight removal/installation/adjusting tool is a brass rod 5/16" in diameter and 4 1/4" long with one end tapered down to 3/16". That and the right hammer and I'm all set. The best part is the price, which was nothing. One day at work a guy I knew was working in the crib where all the bar stock, etc. was stored. I asked him if I could get a piece of brass rod and he cut it off for me. It may leave a small brass mark on the sight, but if it does it scrubs right off without messing up the finish on steel sights. If they were aluminum or plastic it might be a different story.

I've had a sight tool for 25 years.  I never seemed to get the hang of it...I just couldn't get it right.  I paid a lot of money for it but maybe it's not just me.  No one sells the thing anymore.

I got my brass drift out last night and took a close look at it. The end I hit with the hammer was flared out pretty bad, but I already knew that. What I didn't notice before was that the tapered end was peened out a little bit too. So I chucked it in one of my cordless drills and used the fine wheel of my bench grinder on the top end, with the drill turning the opposite direction of the grinding wheel. I swapped ends in the drill and spun the taper against a flat file until I was happy with the shape. And I spun both ends against some sandpaper in my hand to smooth it out, then spun the very ends against a piece of sandpaper lying flat on my workbench. I didn't bother shining it up so it doesn't look new, but works like new. And it's known by the state of California to cause cancer, but then again, EVERYTHING is known by the state of California to cause cancer. They even had a Prop. 65 warning label on some ramen soup I bought this summer. :o  I hope I don't die from eating, or from working on my guns. It's easier to get measurements on my brass punch now and it's 5/16" x 4 1/4" x 3/16", like I thought it was.
