Title: Double-stack 22/45 coming?
Post by: Big Frank on March 17, 2025, 07:52:43 PM
Ruger has patented a double-stack .22 pistol mag and a 22/45 to use it may be on the horizon. If this becomes a reality, assuming they work well I'll probably trade my MK II and 22/45 in for one.

the only question.... will it feed worth a shit.  there is a reason why 22 mags are single stack.

Ruger is getting new patents, so maybe they found a way to make double-stack .22 mags work better. And the Taurus TX 22 with a 16-Round mag has apparently been working okay for the last 6 years. The 22/45 is just a hair taller and should also take a 16-round double-stack mag. I don't know if the SIG Sauer P322 .22 LR Pistol with a 20-Round mag or the FN 502 Tactical .22 LR with a 15-Round mag work well or not. I haven't heard anything good or bad about them. But it's not like no one makes double-stack .22s already. And Kel-Tec makes a quad-stack, but I think that one has problems.

So just now picking up on this topic.

a)  If it works well it would be a boon to silhouette shooters who have to change mags between every string.
b)  Will they make it clear or with witness holes?
c)  Will they work with my existing uppers?
d)  Will I be able to replace my existing lowers to use the new mag, at a decent cost?

My best guess is that it will be a Mark V that's incompatible with any older models. It may be easier to do it that way than to make the lower fit a Mark IV upper, or it might be harder. But they're going to want to sell whole guns. Maybe the lower half will be the serialized portion so you can exchange multiple uppers. I'm all in favor of that.

It is really important how they will address the challenges with reliability, magazine design and compatibility with existing uppers and lowers, as all these factors could determine whether it becomes a true game changer.
Innovations should improve both the construction and the appearance rather than complicate them, so I am in favor of keeping as much compatibility and interchangeability as possible.

To make it a double-stack the frame will need to be a new design. However, the receiver could be the same.

The magazine itself should be easy to figure out. When we talk about double-stack magazines we automatically assume it needs to be a clone of centerfire magazines. If they would leave the top of the magazine the same size (single-round feed to the action) and flare out for double-stack below that.

Rimmed rounds like .22 LR don't feed the same way in double-stack mags as rimless rounds, but in the drawings it looks like they've got that taken care of. I still think I would trade in both of my single-stacks for a double if they get this design perfected.

Well one would hope so.  I believe it can be done.   Case in point my Keltec PMR-30.  It actually works and appears to be a double stack magazine.  It actually has a vane in the back to prevent rim lock...I think.  I need to pull it out of the safe to make certain I actually remember what I am talking about.  I say it appears to be a double stack since the bullets don't lie against one another full length and have magazine separation device which makes it more like two single stacks nestled together.  Which if I am right really looks one way, and isn't yet it does the same thing....

From the drawings it looks like the upper part of the mag forces a fit between each piece of the ammo.  The upper part of the mag really forces those rounds to "stick their noses" way up high.  I hope it works reliably  If that thing ever got jammed a few rounds down it would be one heck of a jam.

I don't know about the Keltec PMR-30 mags, but the CP33 uses a quad-stack mag. Inside, it's like 2 double-stack mags side by side. A lot like a SITES Spectre M4 submachine gun mag. Or Surefire 60 and 100 round mags, etc.
