Just returned from Springfield after dropping off a broken S&W 1911 for some warranty work. Drove over to the Shooting Academy/Retail store and snooped around for some junk to buy...
We couldn't find anything so we decided to throw some rounds downrange at their indoor range in the store. Nice facility, all the goodies and pretty cheap to shoot. Decided to try one of their guns, a custom shop 1911 that runs about 2300 bucks retail. I forgot my glasses and coudn't see the sights, front or back and still managed to hit an 8" target at 25 and 50 feet with 44 out of 50 rounds. The other 6 were on the paper but off the circle. Most were well within an acceptable group considering the blindness of the shooter.
All in all, not a bad gun but given the price, I'll stick with my Para at 700 bucks...
While we were leaving, Mike watched a guy one hand a S&W 500 and nearly break his own nose! The range master wasn't happy!
-
+1 on the Para. IMO macho a-holes deserve whatever they get.
-
I don't think he was being Macho, I think stupid is more the case.
I shoot my .45 with one hand all the time but I know the firearm and know what it's gonna do. I think this guy told the guy at the counter he knew the gun and probably should have been warned that they are a real handful to shoot.
I've shot the Super Blackhawk, S&W Model 29, Thompson Contender .30-30 and several .357 mags by Ruger and Smith and I would never, ever shoot that Model 500 with one hand! I'm way too pretty to mess up my face! ;D
(Especially since most of my cheekbone and eyesocket are now made of metal!) >:(

OIL, OIL
(do ya have a heart?) ;D
-
Yea Haz, the hearts still pumping.
As for the oil, they didn't install any fittings when they put the face together, I guess it's self lubricating! ;D ;D

I'd love to get up there but not going to be anytime soon. The Beretta factory is just up the road but it doesn't have anything like that. No store or range. There is a conference room that has one of every current Beretta product on the wall to llok at. They don't usually let visitors in, just for the Armorer class once a month. There is a metal detector on the way OUT. No extra "stuff" leaves the building. :-[

Come on up, whether you like S&W or not. They have lots of things to play with, the range lane was 20 bucks, unlimited time and for a few more bucks you can rent one of their guns and abuse the shite out of it. Heck, if we didn't have to leave, I'd still be there wasting money. Bring a drivers license and one other form of I.D., no LTC required but from out of state, you have to buy your ammo from the range. You can't bring it with you or buy it in state unless your a local with LTC.
I walked in with my sidearm on my hip but decided to try and see how a high end 1911 shoots. It did have a sweet trigger but since I was blind anyway, I really can't judge if it's any more accurate than my Para or any number of Colts, Springfields or the few other 1911 S&W I've had a chance to shoot. The guy said it's good for 1" groups at 25 yds but I can't see that far anyway so who the heck cares!
P.S. When your done, you ain't gotta clean 'em either!

Good thing you and Pegleg don't work around magnets! ;D
Do either of you throw off a compass? At least you'd have an excuse for having one and still getting lost. (http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/lachen/laughing-smiley-014.gif)
(yeah, I know non-ferrous)

Compass? ...... Compass?
We don't need no stinking compass............I always know right where I am.......... ;D ;D ;D
However, with a couple of 3" "deck screws" in one hip, a metal rod in my left femur, and a prosthetic left leg below the knee, I DO play hell with the metal detectors at the courthouse..........."Sir, you're gonna have to empty your pockets, please"....
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
(me and my bike got between a nice young lady's Dodge Neon and where she wanted to go....also not my fault)

It was Dodge Minivan that ran over me! Must be something wrong with Chrysler products! ;D ;D
Glad your hanging in there PegLeg The worst I have now is a limp, at least I still got both of my original feet.... ;)

Taking the big picture into consideration, and being a 'glass half full' type guy, I look on the bright side of things.
Now I save 50% a pop on pedicures and only have to tie one boot lace every morning..... ;D ;D ;D

Damn Tim!
You might be on to something! Back in '72 I was hit broadside on my bike by a 65 Dart! I walked away (miracle) but both the bike and car were totaled.
-
Well Haz, I've had my bike license since 1973 and had a few close calls but after 35 years there are way too many people on the road that don't speak the language.
I don't think you need to read between the lines to understand that they guy that decided to put me in the hospital for three months and out of work for seven, was in the country under other than legal circumstances.
PegLeg makes a good point! The glass is half full because, what don't kill ya, definately makes you stronger! >:(
-
You guys still riding? (stupid question?) actually I worked with a guy that fixed his bike up to ride with a prosthetic leg. also they have electric shifters that mount on the left handle. I sincerely hope I never get in that position, though I have had a few close calls with soccer mom's and their mini-vans. :P

Nope!
It's not fair to put my family through more than I already have!
A word to anyone who still does ride. Make sure you carry a large amount of "Personal Injury Protection" on your motorcycle policy in case of an underinsured driver.

+1000 on the insurance part.
I would ride again if I could.
I looked into a trike....cost way too much.
Can't ride two wheels due to continuing problems with my knee (won't bend all the way, causes a bad limp).
The girl that hit me had just enough insurance (state required minimum $25,000) to pay off the bike and some medical....
I quit counting medical bills at around $300,000.
Luckily I had enough AD&D to pay off my house and vehicles (I would recommend AD&D insurance to everyone, worth the $10 a month).
-
Pretty much the same for me. My medical hit 500k and kept going. Same story, state minimum for the driver that ran over me so my insurance company and the shyster got two thirds of the settlement which left me with about 8K. Enough to pay about half of my deductibles and co-pays.
Bikes totaled but the guy who bought it at auction called me for the extra set of keys. I had him stop by the house so I could hobble out and take a look at the carnage. It had been about 8 months since the accident but he stuck the keys in the ignition and she fired right up. It wasn't rideable but he wanted the motor and other parts to build another he had at home. He just gotten back from Iraq, 1st Lt in the 3rd ID. Purple Heart and all!
I thanked him for his service and told him to buy a decent helmet. It saved my life!!!!! 8)
On a positive note, I found that copious amounts of morphine are enough to make you forget where you left your cigarettes! I don't smoke anymore, 2 years and 3 months today!
-
Tim,
Though I would like to quit smoking..I think I'll pass on your way. ;)

I don't blame you Haz.
You can always try the patch but they don't stay lit and they taste like shite!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I only got halfway throught the thread and I have to ask, what the heck is the deal with Dodges and motorcycles? I was driving a full-size Dodge van when I was rear-ended by a motorcycle. It hit hard enough to put the motorcycle UNDER my van and a wrecker had to pick the back of the van up off the ground to get it back out of there. The rider dented the corner of my quarter panel with his body, rag-dolled through the air, landed in the street, was run over by oncoming traffic, and dragged 80 feet down the road under a car. :o Beleive it or not he survived all that but needed a new set of wheels, as in a wheelchair. I think everything was paralzed except his head. All I had wrong with me was whiplash.
