CLEVELAND - Volunteers supporting Barack Obama picked up hundreds of people at homeless shelters, soup kitchens and drug-rehab centers and drove them to a polling place yesterday on the last day that Ohioans could register and vote on the same day, almost no questions asked.

The huge effort by a pro-Obama group, Vote Today Ohio, takes advantage of a quirk in the state's elections laws that allows people to register and cast ballots at the same time without having to prove residency.

Republicans have argued that the window could lead to widespread voter fraud because officials wouldn't have an opportunity to verify registration information before ballots were cast.

Among the volunteers were Yori Stadlin and Vivian Lehrer of the Upper West Side, who got married last week and decided to spend their honeymoon shepherding voters to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.

Early today, Stadlin's van picked up William Woods, 59, at the soup kitchen of the Bishop Cosgrove Center.

"I never voted before," Woods said, because of a felony conviction that previously barred him from the polls. "Without this service, I would have had no way to get here."

Umm... felons STILL can't vote, as far as I remember.  I know libs have been trying to change that for ages.  As my dad used to say, "because the Dems lose out on those fine, upstanding citizens voting for them."

This really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.  Afterall, Obama IS from Chicago, where the dem's motto is "Vote early, vote often!!"

Heck, in Atlanta, the NAACP and the mayor went to the jails and prisons in the area to register all non-fellons and hand out absentee ballots to those who could still 'legally' vote.
Now that's scrapin' the bottom of the barrel.

As a resident of Ohio, I find this situation to be a disgrace. The Dems are making a considerable effort to take this state, and they're all too willing to use any means necessary to achieve that goal.

I waited around for a while before mailing in my voter registration. I don't know if they accepted it at the Sec. of State's office in Columbus, but that's work I was told to mail it. To avoid a double registration, I didn't try to register at the BMV, so if they lost my registration, I'm not registered to vote. Maybe it was recieved and processed, but I don't know yet. Wouldn't surprise me if it was recieved and then mishandled; I registered Republican and this is now a Dem Admin. Not going to give in to any conspiracy theories right now, but we'll see how the Same-Day Voters are handled.

My advice to anyone who hasn't registered and still has time, register in person at the Board of Elections in your county or where ever you can submit your registration and make sure that you have enough time to recieve confirmation of your registration (ie. polling location) to re-register if you have a problem.

I know that I can be the poster child for anti-PC, but our whole election system is going down the crapper!!!

Voting is not a Right - It is a responsibility!  It is a responsibility to be taken very seriously!

Registration should be done in advance to assure voter security.  Today you can walk in, show proof of residence (something really official like a utility bill), and vote!  Our daughter called a couple weeks ago upset because the system will allow her to vote twice - once in Des Moines, where she lives now, and once here in Minnesota because her driver's license shows she lives here.  I asked her about Ames, because she has sublet her old university apartment and has rent statement from there .....................HOLY  SHIT, was that the wrong comment to make!

Same day registration, polling place registration and verification by things like bills are nothing but an invitation for fraud.  In this day and age of massive illegal immagration we might just as well use the big green buses to run down to TJ and bring back the voters of our choice.

I know I live in the dark ages, but with electronic only voting, where is the paper trail for verification and recounts?  We are just one good power surge away from a total election day failure.

Nothing worth doing is easy.  Take the time to register in a secure and positive way, take the time to vote in person if possible and by absentee ballot if necessary.  Don't take the easy way out and make it easier for fraud to take place.

I know here in Ga, the dems and NAACP made a big stink over people having to show a picture ID to vote....even though the state gave out ID's for FREE(for those without a driver's license) during a select period of time.
They still bitched and moaned about it being 'unfair to the poor and downtrodden'.

here in Peru you get fined if you don't vote .. got that? your gov. issued ID is marked when you vote - not who you vote for, just the fact that you came in and did your duty. if your ID is not marked there are certain benefits you cannot take advantage of until you pay your fine. it's great, you don't pay to vote, but you get fined if you don't vote. ;D
