Title: Obama ads on the Outdoor channel
Post by: Jkwas on October 09, 2008, 08:15:36 PM
I was a little surprised over the last few weeks to see Ads supporting Barack Obama on the Outdoor channel, especially during wednesday night at the range.  Has anyone else seen these, and if so, what do you think about them?

I think fair is fair, and censorship is wrong.

The Outdoor Channel is a business.  They do not cater to a certain political group.  If some one wants to pay them to run legitimate advertisement why should they say no?

Dems hunt, fish, shoot and own firearms, should OC just toss those viewers and potential consumers of other advertisers over the dam?

EDIT:

I detest the man and his policies and think that anyone that votes for him is either a socialist/Marxist and or to stupid to be allowed to vote.  AND any one that is still 'undecided' should be on artificial life support as they are already brain dead!

I don't think that a media outlet, including stations like the Outdoor Channel, can refuse to sell advertising to candidates.

If it were from an outside group they could, but not for a candidate or party.

That was what was brought up in the threats from BHO's camp over the NRA ads calling BHO on his total flip of claims to his political history and the stance of his party.

Talk about pissing away a $....BHO advertising on the Outdoor Channel ! ! !

If I get a call from the pollsters I'm gonna tell 'em I made my mind up when he advertised on the Outdoor Channel.

Maybe the lying dogs will waste a few more $'s helping out our side.

I'm not sure the OC is subject to the same rules as a broadcast stations or broadcast networks.

I'm also fairly sure that there are "outdoors-people" who will fall for The One's rhetoric.  Sad, but true.  There are a number of "outdoor" rags that don't take a strong stance and appear to accept Obama's "I support the 2nd amendment" at face value.

I'm a little disappointed that OC didn't at least attempt to refuse the ads.  We all applauded when Barrett refused to do business with California over the .50Cal issue.    What it tells me is the owners of the OC are not driven by principal, or that their principals are different from mine.

I'd hope that some of the program producers on OC would take exception and produce segments that counter Obama's hyperbole

I guess his campaign has such deep pockets, you're gonna see his ads everywhere.  I see now he's purchased his own 30 minute infomercial.     Would you buy a chamois from this man?  I mean, they are made in Germany,    Achtung baby!

I've seen the ads and thought that he was wasting his money, but you got to realize that he actually wants your vote. How many McCain or NRA ads have you seen on the Outdoor channel or on VS.

From my checking I found out that the FCC has a "reasonable access" rule, all broadcasters that accept paid advertising must sell at least some time to any qualified candidate.
John Mccain chose the socialist public finance route and is limited to 85 million, Barak H. Obama said first he would also, then changed his mind and took the fund raising route. At last count BHO has raised over 400 million.
My favorite radio station(1360 The Lion out of Johnstown, Colorado) which is very right wing has been running Obama ads, and no Mccain ads.

Yes but the Outdoor Channel isn't a "broadcaster".     They are not a TV or Radio "station" and do not transmit (or broadcast).  Hence the rules are different.     While the FCC does exert a fair amount of control over cable and satellite companies their content is pretty much unregulated.

I think Outdoor Channel (OC) would be classified as a station, as opposed to a company like Dish, Direct or a cable company that just transmits signals for people like OC.

Does this mean that the Obama Channel HAS to show McCain ads if he buys the time ?

Q: What is the "equal opportunities" rule of political cablecasting?A:  Once a cable system allows a legally qualified candidate to use (identifiable appearance by voice or picture) its facilities, it must afford "equal opportunities" to all other legally qualified candidates for that office to use its facilities. The cable system may not censor the content of the candidate's material in any way, and many not discriminate between candidates in practices, regulations, facilities or services rendered pursuant to the equal opportunities rules.

For what it's worth, This is what I got from the FCC website.
