Title: Idea...How about an Annual Gunman1911 Memorial Shoot?
Post by: Hazcat on October 21, 2008, 08:14:39 PM
Just an idea.

will use standard targets from online somew where.

Rifles and hand guns
break down by caliber.

Closest 5 shot group to the center, smallest group etc.

What do ya think?

No I don't want to be 'in charge"  no one really needs to be.  Just post your targets with a ruler on it.

Marshal - or M'ette - let the family know that we're honoring him this way, OK?

How about a $5.00 entry fee that we send to charity in his name (or maybe NRA-ILA)?

.22 rifles:

Iron sights at 50 yards

Optics 100 yards

bench rest consists of sand bags and/or wood 'stool', no lead sled kinda stuff.

We could also have an off hand at 50 (my club won't allow offhand on the 100 line).

C'mon guys and gals give me a hand here.

Should probably call it the annual "David V. Raddatz Memorial Shoot".

Maybe, but that is not how we knew him nor how he chose to know us.

Run with it Haz, I'm behind ya, sounds good so far, maybe a shorter match for those who shoot indoor, but that would be they're own class.

How about bullseye broken down into rimfire, minor and major?

Oh ... I'm all for this!

Sounds like the perfect reason for me to go out and buy a 1911.
heck, any artists out there? build a 1911 to raffle off or give away as prize for the memorial shoot?

I really like the 1911 idea...evidently it was his favorite, so why don't we go that way?
Besides, I LOVE shooting my 1911.

You you know what the ballistics of a .22 are at 100 yards? You must have the match version of the 10/22, mine is just a pawn shop find.    ;D

I'm in, like the idea of calling it the Gunman1911 Memorial Match. Maybe put his name under the heading, like

Gunman1911 Memorial Match
(David Raddatz 1955 - 2008)

OK y'all....

Start coming up with the rules.  I figure a 4 week time limit on the shoot should give everyone a chance at getting to the range.

Targets?

M58, you'll need to 'splain "rimfire minor and major" to some of us (like me ;D )

If we get on this we can kick it off on 1 Nov. this year and roll it back to October next year.

Rimfire = any rimfire handgun

Minor* = Below a power factor of 165,000 (bullet weight x speed)

Major* = Power factor of 165,000 and up

* USPSA ratings

In general, a .40 S&W should make Major

I would think that rather than reinvent the wheel we could use NRA competition rules.  They have something for everyone, so we could pick the competitions for each gun and let everyone shoot.  NRA does a lot of Postal Matches, and maybe we could just pick from those.

I believe what he is refering to is power factor (velcocity x bullet weight / 1000; 200 grain x 900fps/1000=180PF) with 125 to 164 Minor and 165+ Major similar to USPSA rules, anything 9mm and bigger rated by PF and the 22s as a seperate category.

Opitics or Iron, Revolver/Auto then broke down by Rimfire or Major/Minor is a great idea.
Use the NRA Bullseye targets which are pretty easy to find.
Edit: just not fast enough  m58 beat me to the post :)

I was thinking of a online, print it target so we can get them easy (and cheap).

M58, I was thinking simple and easy.  Set our own rules for regular guns.

OK I set up some .22 rifle rules that were (I think) simple and clear.

Lets get the others the same way.

Maybe with handguns lets go for pocket guns (snub and itty bitty autos) say anything with a barrel under 3 or 3.5 inches shot at 10 yards.

Other handguns (with a barrel limit of 8 or 9 inches) at 25 yards for iron sights and 50 for optics.

All ammo must be factory loads.

Set up bench and freehand rules.

Then lets go shoot!

No limit on targets submitted, $5.00 for initial entry (for charity in Gmans' name).

OK............ Sounds good. Marshal will get with you later on . He is doing that pesky stuff called"real work" now.. LOL

I think it is a great idea... and I think we could donate the money to what ever you all want to donate it to. Does any one of you know a family that REALLY needs help? Not that the NRA isn't a good place.. but it seems to some time get lost in the shuffle.. and maybe we might just want to do something on a more personal level. Just a suggestion......

Don't know what his financial situation was, but reading the obituary on the funeral home site it indicated memorials to help her with expenses.  Maybe for the first annual it would be appropriate to check with her for an idea, and if finances are an issue we could give it to his family.  I'm sure that all those heart procedures were not cheap.

M'ette, the funeral home will be able to either give you some contact info or act as a go between.

I hope I am following you right, you want to have a match over the net. Like make up events and rules and have thread where people post their targets after they shoot. A week long thing were you have to have your targets posted by a certain date or time?

For the handgun part, use 1911's of course cause they were his favorite but also for everyone that doesnt have one an auto class as well would be cool. Maybe you could make a target that you have to hit certain areas for scores. Not just a round bullseye but maybe like half  and a quarter bullseyes that you can print out and put up at 15 yrd or something, and put  two shots on each target and then score them.

You could have like 5 targets to print out. 1 regular Bullseye- 1half bullseye- 1 quarter- and then we could maybe come up with something else of a challenge. I dont know how to regulate it (on an honor system) or if you would want a time limit per shot group or if you wanted, with each target make you have to do something like one you pick the gun up off a table shoot, then on one draw and shoot, maybe load a mag chamber a round and shoot at one, ect. I think it could work.

Am I trackin? is this what you are getting at or are you talking about a real match located somewhere.

Kev,

For instance on one target you have to draw load a mag chamber a round and put 4 rounds on target with in 7 sec. is that what you are getting at?

More like smallest group and highest point count based on scoring rings.

This is a Splendid idea.

For something of this potential scale, though, I would say keep it as simple as possible.
Shooting for group size is easiest, as any target will suffice.
If shooting for target score, then stick to something like an NRA bullseye target at 25 yds for the handguns with separate rimfire and centerfire matches (having different categories for centerfire calibers could get cumbersome).

For rifles, you could designate a range for rimfire and centerfire and use an NRA target also, or for kicks, use a simulated sniper target. I found one that simulates a 'Carlos Hathcock' type shot at another sniper. The scoring zone simulates the other sniper's scope lens. You could go for tightest group here also.

Just my $.02 worth...

That is why I said let's pick a target we can print out (all the same) then simple iron sights, optics, all STOCK guns.

Closest to the 'x' and smallest group, off hand and SIMPLE bench (truck hood/sand bags).

This vacation interupted for the following message:

I propose the five bullseye with 1/2" lines from this site

I've used these targets for almost everything I shoot at one time or another.

Now back to the grouse woods ... see you all in a few days !!!
